Now that we can edit the map I want to remake it. For starters the look of it, the new provinces will have to wait...

Heh true that. It looks confusing imo, and it makes the game run slower...

But this isn't exactly the same... will be interesting to see how it' gonna look. :)

Birger, I think they look great but before you waste a lot of time, I should warn you about the 16 megabyte limit in lightmap. The compression system used by Johan prefers smooth transition of shade. That's why the inner-glow thing works well. The compression does very badly with more complex textures like the ones you post.

The EU2 map is alright but it's a bit too cartoonish for me.
Hopefully this will turn out ok. :)

That reminds me, Johan told me once that he's using a modified map for EUII where at least Europe looks like the CK map.

They both look real good...do all provs have to be the same texture?

I thought your upper example would be great for mountain provs, where you lower example would do quite well for desert and plains provs. Maybe a more "rounded" version of your upper texture for forests?

Just a thought, don't know if it's even practical. :)

I'd like to see that as well, I'll ask him nicely the next time we go for a beer. :)
I dunno, perhaps I should open up a paypal account. ;)

About the map, I'll edit Europe and see how big the lightmap gets.
I don't mind the work, much can be done by actions and I really want a nice looking map for a poster. :)

Edit: I start by adding the CK style shading, I think it looks much better with that. Does anyone got a 1:1 map of EUII? :D

Interesting and highly relevant thread. Replicating the original EU border shadings is obviously not as easy as one would expect and that statement is based both on my own labours but also on the work I've seen posted here.

The PS bevel function just doesn't live up to expectations, so I'm leaning more and more towards redoing the whole map in some new way. Leaving the inner glow but perhaps using a simpler province border.
