One motivation I frequently see cited for CKII's lack of cultures (compared to other Paradox titles, at least) is that the map isn't detailed enough to support their addition. Well, the time to change that is now! With the increased granularity of CKII's new map, showcased in recent dev diaries, it'd feel both wrong and unfair if we didn't receive at least a few new cultures to accompany it.

Although they're fairly superficial, cultures create playthroughs. It's a blast to play mix-and-match between cultures and religions to craft ahistorical (but plausible) pairings. And as the recent addition of Assyrian shows, I'm not the only player who loves helping obscure, forgotten cultures reclaim their legacy.

I'm making this thread so that the community can assemble an authoritative list of cultures we'd like to see. It'd be great if we got even a few of these!
  • Slovak/Moravian
  • Burtas (please don't make them Turkish!)
  • Sardinian
  • Mizrahi
  • Cumbric/Briton
  • Cossack (Russian/Steppe melting pot)
  • Anatolian/Oghuz distinction for Turks
  • Norse-Gael (Norse/Irish or Scottish melting pot)
  • Tuareg
  • Walloon
  • Flemish
Confirmed for Holy Fury:
  • Songhai
  • Hausa
  • Soninke
  • Kanuri
  • Zaghawa
  • Daju
  • Coptic (!)
  • Crimean Gothic (!!!)
  • Dalmatian
  • Carantanian (Slovene)
  • Bosnian
  • Arberian (Albanian)

I'd personally like to see more melting pots. German/French becoming Belgian, Spanish/French becoming Catalan...

We already have Catalans. Aren't they part of the Iberian melting pots in the early start dates?

Could be. I've only done one playthrough since getting Old Gods and Charlemagne, so I've been going off the wiki, which only mentions English and I think some Norse one.

i agree, but i'd like to see some ahistorical melting pots as well. just a few common possibilities that happen, and a few meme-y ones...

but that's just me.

Yeah, Jewish cultures need to be redone. We need Mizrahi Jews, and the geographic spread of the cultures should be more like "Mizrahi in Middle East/North Africa, Ashkenazi in eastern and central Europe, and Sephardi everywhere else" rather than "Sephardi in Spain and Ashkenazi everywhere else". The main reason there are Ashkenazi Jews everywhere now is because of the Holocaust. There really shouldn't be Ashkenazi Jews in e.g. Mediterranian areas in the middle ages.

There is little point to adding a lot of cultures before they improve on the way cultures are handled in game. Currently both player and AI just pave over the local cultures to create a great big mono-culture blob, because this is the only efficient way to build a cohesive realm.

If they added a way for these minority cultures to actually survive and achieve some kind of tolerated status within a larger realm, then they would add a lot of flavor to the game.

If you're min-maxing, maybe. I usually play with combo Slow Conversion + No Non-Adjacent Conversion rules on; it goes a long way toward helping those local cultures to survive. I also intentionally keep vassals of cultures other than my own for roleplay purposes.

While I do agree that the issues you mentioned need to be addressed, that's not a good reason to avoid adding absent cultures. Even if they have an unfortunate tendency to vanish, they still go a long way in adding to immersion and accuracy.

Something like EUIV's accepted cultures feature would be helpful in that respect. Maybe allow you to add a new one every couple levels of Tolerance, and it eliminates the foreigner malus.

I really like that idea! It would also give a more immediate benefit to reaching a certain level of Tolerance. As it stands, this technology is a bit uninteresting and in general more technologies should have meaningful level-based unlocks to encourage investing in them.

This, along with removing the AI's obsession with educating everyone to its own culture, is probably the best solution.

Bulgar-Greek meltin pot limited to Albania?

Albanian shouldn't be a melting pot; Albanians are thought to be remnants of the ancient Illyrians.

Norman-Lombard melting pot?

Yep, that's the idea. It's kinda odd that Sicily tends to stay Greek way into the game.

Wasn't that ethnoreligious group?

Kinda. It's complicated. Modern Egyptians are Arabic-speaking, but at the time of the Muslim Conquest, they spoke Coptic and were Christian. CKII's Egypt would be more accurately represented by Coptic-culture (not in the Arabic group) provinces ruled over by Sunni Bedouin governors.

Cuman-Russian melting pot? Why do you value Cossacks over Tatars?

Yes, a melting pot for Russian + any Steppe culture. And I don't; having Tatars and Kazaks as well would be greatly appreciated.

I'll continue to revise this post as others reply with their own ideas. Have at it, friends.
despite having Slovakian blood in my veins, I must say that Slovaks should not be a CK2 culture. They really didn't have any nobility in this period.
It would be better if there is Moravian culture covering duchies of Moravia, Nitra and other parts of Slovakia which are outside of duchy of Nitra.

As for Touaregs. They are definitely a catchy or sexy culture from our current perspective. Problem with them is that they emerged as ethno-cultural entity late in the CK2 period, around 15th century from mixture of Veiled Sanhaja Berbers (mainly tribes of Lamtuna, Guddala and Massufa) and other desert tribes such as the Zaghawa, Tanmak and others, who inhabited southern fringes of Sahara and the Sudanese peoples, mainly the Soninke.

Which leads me to one very important West African culture which is missing on your list:
Soninke, the founders and people of Wagadu, known better as Ghana.

I like the Cossack idea. "Egyptian" could be a melting pot of the Coptic and any Arabic culture.
