I've been able to get a general idea from reading the forum and the FAQs that it's best to build manufactories in a bunch so the cost only increases by 50 ducats for each one.
However, this is not always the case. I have seen the cost (at zero inflation) suddenly jump up by much more than 50 ducats. As an example, open the 1.08b Age of Exploration scenario as Austria. Use the Montezuma cheat to get sufficient cash, and then begin to build Fine Arts Academies in all provinces. No, I'm not saying this is a good idea in a real game.
The first FAA costs 800, the second 850, and the third 900. The fourth costs 1050. The fifth costs 1100. I am unclear on what the break point is for such a significant cost increase.
This post is an attempt to determine what affects the cost of a manufactory and how the cost is affected. Does the year? Does the number of already existing manufactories in the world? How about the number of already existing manufactories in your nation? What does the "Number that can be built at a lower cost" line mean, if anything?
If anyone can point me to previously done research, I would appreciate it.
