Just a heads up. I preordered at Gamersgate and was pleasantly surprised to see that there is an 88 page manual that can be downloaded after purchase! Thank you Paradox! Now to print it out and have some nighttime reading material.

Ok, just printed it out and have two things to say:

First, thank you for providing this manual for us before the actual game comes out - much appreciated.
Second, I really could have done without the pictures of stukas and battleships in the background of the text. Makes for difficult reading. Yeah, I know I'm whining, but why wouldn't you want a manual that was easy to read as opposed to one that makes you try to ignore the stuff that is in the background?

Just started glancing through the manual (could not keep off it even though I'm at work).

In the manual it says:
One of the greatest features of this game is the ability to connect and play with up to nine other players.

While the GG information page said it had multiplayer with up to 24 players.

Doesn't really matter to me which one is correct, just wanted to point it out.

Well, with HoI3 you didn't knew exactly what you'll get. Here you clearly know it. Will pre-order.

Yip yip.... I pre-ordered too and also downloaded the 88 page manual.
I was hoping to get it printed out professionally on good quality paper and spiral bound using a web based printer... http://www.fileprint.org/uk/index.php (yes i know, it costs as much as the game, but i dislike trying to read an online manual.. bad eyes and cricked neck )
Would this be allowed... its only one copy and for personal use... no different to taking the .pdf file to a high street printer (except a lot cheaper) ?

Difficult to answer. There´s enough information for those who have played HOI 2 already. But there aren´t any graphics or overviews for quick reference. Besides some topics appear at least twice and sometimes it´s not easy to spot the "inner logic" of the manual, e.g. several pages are about "combat" (too long for just a general brush through) and some 20 or so pages later you can read about "Combat: The Art of War". But as much as I´ve read this isn´t the final version and you can get most of the information everyone has been asking for.

Well, to be fair, this isn't a Paradox release; this is from an independent developer who was licensed the HOI2 source code to improve on it (so that Paradox could be free to do other grand projects....like HOI 3 ).

I understand your reluctance, however.

I have access to Adobe Acrobat at work and was able to remove the background graphic (watermark) and add page numbers - so it didn't seem to be 'protected'. Not tried to print it yet however ...

You may want to wait with your printout until release day. They will probably update the manual then.

I'd like to remove the watermark as well - how did you do that? What tool did you use in Acrobat? Just curious.

I've pre-ordered as well, mostly to be able to take a look at the manual. To be honest, I'm a little disappointed - it seems to be largely a cut-and-paste job from the development diaries. Don't get me wrong - I'm still really excited about AoD, and I'm assuming the current manual available for download is a draft copy that (hopefully)will be updated - but if you're looking for new or more detailed information about the game you won't find much.
