How does the manpower pool change as a nation grows?

Where are troops built?

Is manpower pooled so troops can be built anywhere or does each province have a pool and troops have to be built where the pools are?

it increase slowly, much quickier if you take control of high population province.

Where are troops built?

Where you want in your realm

You can build troops anywhere, but each province has it own limit (ex: you can build up about 50k in istanbul, but only 1k in sinai).
In all case, you can't build more than your national manpower.

Does building up a large army (say 100k) reduce the effectiveness of your industrial production? I believe already I understand the impact of inflation as a result of military development, but I'd like to know if there are any other issues that arise.

Thanks

Hey, you must pay salaries every month! If you are not wealthy enough, they will first:
- take your money in your pocket.
- when you have nothing more in your pocket, they will go take the money of yours technological investment.
- if still insufficient, force you to make a loan (wich cost some interest, and bank are more rapacious than your soldier).
- when you have turn unsolvable due the gigantic debt, your country will bankrupt.
At this time, your large army will be useful to quel the massive revolts (but they will not be very concerned as you still don't have money to paid them).
This will last as long your revenu will not be highier (or your army significantly lower).
And you haven't seen the salary due to sailor! Your ships are something like a floating financial disaster :)

You can turn them into milicia to reduce cost, but you decrease their efficiency. Sometime, it is the only way to simply survive.

Merci, Monsieur Sarges!

A few follow up questions on the militia issue, as I haven't seen it discussed frequently up to this point:

1) I can understand that downgrading regulars into militia reduces both cost and effectiveness, but with some investment can the militia be upgraded back to regulars?

2) In terms of one-on-one effectiveness, are militia stronger or equal to rebel scum?

3) Do you have to convert your entire military into militia or can you designate only certain armies?

4) Are ships, cavalry artillery also converted into militia or does this only affect infantry?

Thanks

Yes, it takes some times until the effectiveness increase.

2) In terms of one-on-one effectiveness, are militia stronger or equal to rebel scum?

Difficult question: a militia lead by a powerful general (Frederic II or Gustav-Adolf) will be a very efficiency army.
On contrary, the same army lead by general Anyone-can-do-the-stuff can go directly from defeat to defeat.
In the same way, there is a great difference between rebel scum. Some of them are very strong (rebellious armies in civil war are tremendous adversory, sometimes lead by yours best generals ;))

I would say (it is only my appreciation) that the worst milicia in general case is at the same level than the average rebel scum.

3) Do you have to convert your entire military into militia or can you designate only certain armies?

Your entire army has the same level (but each detachment has it own moral depending of their victories, defeat, rest state).

4) Are ships, cavalry artillery also converted into militia or does this only affect infantry?

Everything can be converted into militia, but land forces are separated from fleet: you can choose to have the best navy and the worst army.
