You must be very carefull with your manpower. Be defensive if it's low. Avoid battles and attrition, and don't storm castles. remember it takes on generation of peace to build it up to top again.

I like how the manpower is calculated in Rome, can't see any problems with it. You just need to use your head a bit, wich is good in a strategy game.

Do you have any armies or combination of armies larger that what the province supply limit that they are located in can hold? If so, you will constantly drain your manpower.

You are in a long term crunch here, the most important thing to do now, is to convert any province to your home culture, because this allows you to recruit at 100% of the value, if they are not in your subgroup then you can't recruit any troops. If they are in your subgroup you get 80%

Mercenary troops come in handy, but they will bleed your manpower reserves when they need to be reinforced.

trading grain? That will help the population grow and that helps with easing the next manpower crunch.

IN a real pinch I have adjusted the national idea to promote slaves to freedman because , freedman are the category that provides the troops. (slaves provide the money, and rich people provide the research.)

basically you have to lick you wounds and heal for a bit, but think of the long term goals for increasing your manpower base. In my current game i can pull in around 1500 men a month (Which is double, and i haven't completed the GC)

Hooray for excessive barbarian invasions on civilised countries in a period that had what, two? Three?

Yeah, start working on getting a single culture in your provinces - a governor with high Charisma will help a lot.

Another idea would be to colonise the northern provinces and allow the Barbarians to take them. Then demand that the barbarians become your vassal, and they'll have to deal with the future barbarian hordes.

Use the +Population Omen to increase your overall population. This will in turn improve your manpower situation.

Ensure that you only have enough armies to defend yourself with, and that they aren't suffering from unnecessary attrition.

Build Forums and spread grain as far as you can across your lands, the extra population will come in handy. Ensure that your provinces have governors that aren't corrupt and have bad traits that reduce pop growth (and look for governors with manpower bonuses!).

I would bet you have an army taking attrition somewhere. Check all your armies, that "leak" is the only practical way to drain your manpower and prevent it rising.

Also, let barbarians die of attrition before attacking them: you'll lose less men.
