Matlhus' basic idea that economic/technological growth is eaten up by population growth, pretty much depict world economics prior to the industrial revolution. Only then were some of us truly able to leave the shackles of this poverty trap behind.

Alas, many nations in Africa would have much to gain if they paid more attention to his theories, like China has done...

Indeed. Tanzania for instance has had record growth for many years, IIRC the average for the last 2 decades is about 7% average growth a yeah. This is a LOT. Yet, Tanzania is still dirt poor, when it should be substantially richer. This is because the population has grown as much, so the net growth in GDP pr citizen is negligible. So the country has not grown in wealth, as per Malthus theory.
