Maldives: Indian Ocean Supremacy

9MlznAv.jpg

I’m off work for the next week, and it’s getting cold outside where I live, so it’s time to start a new EUIV game! In this campaign I will be playing as the Maldives. This inconspicuous and somewhat feeble country is located to the south of India, and it will be my task to raise it from obscurity to hopefully become an Indian Ocean powerhouse.

I will update my progress each day.

Contents:
Part 1: 1444-1531
Part 2: 1532-1589
Part 3: 1590-1607

Day 1: 1444-1531

The Maldives begins the game with one province, and is somewhat similar to the Ryukyu start in that it is isolated from the rest of the world. This means we will need to begin by declaring a no cb war.

The obvious choice would probably be to attack one of the one province minors in southern India. However, the problem I find with expanding in southern India is that it relies on opportunism, which tends to slow things down a lot. For this reason I decided to go for south East Asia instead, as the countries here are smaller and therefore more manageable. I sold the three heavy ships that we were given at the start of the game, trained up a couple of extra cavalry units, and attacked + vassalised the one province minor Makassar:

I used Makassar’s claim on its neighbour Luwu to annexe it shortly afterwards:

Once Makassar had been integrated the next target was Kutai. Initially I vassalised them and took four provinces. This allowed me to convert to Hindu, which is probably my favourite religion in the game. Once the conversion was complete I sold Kutai back a couple of the provinces to save on admin points, as I wanted to get to the first idea group as fast as possible.

I took exploration as the first idea group. This allowed me to uncover the two lucrative spice islands of and Ternate and Tidore, which were both quickly conquered.

And a few years later I was able to get the colonial range that allowed me to start colonising. The aim is to get around Africa as fast as possible so that I can start to Westernise.

Once Kutai had been integrated my next target was Brunei. This war took longer than expected as Brunei had quite a nice income and were able to keep throwing troops at me. In the end though I was able to whittle them down, and they were vassalised:

The most powerful country in this part of the world at this time was Majapahit, but by the turn of the century I had overtaken them in both army size and military tech. Time to declare war! Seven provinces were taken, and I released Sunda as a new vassal. In 1520 I declared a second war, which polished off the rest of their provinces

It looks like Vijianagar is getting wrecked pretty hard. Bahmanis and Bengal are both looking powerful:

My goal at the moment is to completely dominate both the Moluccas and Malacca trade nodes. This meant that Siak was the next target:

And by 1531 my colonists had made it all of the way to South America, which allowed me to start westernising:

While I was westernising I took the one province minor Buton. I converted it and released it as a Hindu vassal, which will help with some of my expansion later on.

More wars in South East Asia. I fed all of this area to my vassal Siak:

Once westernisation had been completed I needed to dominate all of the African trade nodes in order to get the +1 merchants from the trade companies. This meant taking out Benin for their estuary province:

The east coast of Africa will be important, as I eventually intend to funnel all of my trade through to Zanzibar. First it had to be conquered:

Once I had secured the Zanzibar trade node it was time to head north to do the same in the Gulf of Aden:

It looks like Ming is in trouble, which is fortunate as they were starting to look a bit scary:

I took Yemen as another vassal in this war:

Ming’s implosion gave me an opportunity to gain a beachhead into China. I attacked Wu shortly after they had broken free and took some of their provinces. Unfortunately the Aggressive Expansion here is quite insane – I got a small coalition forming against me shortly after I took this screenshot. Fortunately it didn’t last too long, as I didn’t want to waste time fighting more wars in this area (at least not for now).

In 1589 the annexation of Siak was completed, which gave us full control of the South East Asia archipelago:

Time to move our trade port to Zanzibar:

By now Maldives had become a world power. Countries’ Armies sorted by Size:

The Ottomans are looking a bit scary, particularly as they just got a border with me and decided to rival me. Hopefully by rivalling them back I will be able to secure some allies….

With the Ottomans threatening, I had hoped to be able to secure an alliance with one of the bigger European powers. Unfortunately none were interested. Instead I had to settle for Bahmanis, who have a decent size army (40k+) and decent military tech (Only 1 behind the Ottomans).

In reality it didn’t matter too much, as shortly after securing the alliance the Ottomans got stuck in a really long regency council. This should give me a bit of time to bolster my defences:

While this was all going on, the 30 Years War was raging in Europe. Spain got hit pretty hard:

Kjc2DRE.png

With the Ottomans out of the picture, I could focus my attentions elsewhere. I took some more land in China:

qN9NPQ7.png

And also from Sind. This gives us a foothold in India:

I noticed that the Mamluks had made an alliance with the knights, who had recently taken up residence in Malta. I had just enough colonial range to take Malta during the war that followed:

OyU4kcq.png

This in turn gave me enough coring range to take Cyprus as well from the Mamluks. I’m not sure if I will be getting involved in Europe too much during this run, as it will mainly be focused on Asia, but the opportunity of grabbing a couple of bases in the Mediterranean was too good to pass up.

The Commonwealth are making some great headway into the HRE. It will be interesting to see the fireworks if they get a border with France:

Very interesting. It seems that the start doesn't really differ from Ryukyu. I also like how the Maldivian Empire is involved with wars around half the globe at the turn of the 17th century :) Keep up the good work!

It's basically Ryukyu without the pressure of feeling the need to go for the WC achievement, so it is more of a relaxed game (although I’m still playing as aggressively as I can :))

Why didn't you put the trade port into south Africa? wouldn't that mean you had one more station to transfer trade and increase your income?

Ivory coast probably had to much competition to be a viable main trade port? It could even give you some american trade income, couldn't it?
