I read the manual some a few weeks ago but can't for the life of me remember how to make units. Its not like EU3 in that regard, or am I missing something?

In the province screen there is a button at the bottom with crossed swords, that's where you make new units. The button next to it, with a hammer, is where you build new buildings.
At the very bottom of the screen, along the bar that touches the minimap, are the recruitment/building/barbarian interaction buttons.
Alternatively, you could click a province and press F on your keyboard.
