One of the things I really liked about Sins of a Solar Empire was the fact that there were trade ships flying between trading stations in different systems. This made the map feel alive and gave me the feeling that there were other things happening in my empire other than the things I did.

This is true. Even in Distant Worlds, seeing so many trade ships moving from System to System gave me the impression of a living Universe. It really made me feel immersed.

In what way did Distant worlds implement it, was it just trade between trade stations or did mining posts and planets factor into it aswell?
If I remember right in Distant Worlds everything is civil-based. So trading, fueling, goods transport, civilian security... I agree, it's particularly immersive

Yeah in DW, i'd say almost 80%, of all ships on the map are civilians, individual mining, fueling, transport, passenger, smuggling and trading vessels just going about and doing their business.
It's one of the things about DW that i actually really love. but i'm 99% we won't see that sort of thing in Stellaris, except maybe civilian transport... since free unrestricted POP migration is an available policy.

Maybe they could make small ships flying too and from trade stations, research stations and the different planets.

I would love that. :) nothing major but just seeing little ships fly by just adds so much life. :)

sins of the solar empire they have tradeship going from trade port to tradeport/per planet you can raid them if you are enemy. They also have planets with built in spaceships flying around the planet like coruscant in starwars

In totalwar they had caravans going to city by city for aesthetic purposes
