I'm surprised that the game cannot be played in windowed mode, because the graphics do not look good in higher-res monitors (1400x1050 in my case). Everything looks sort of blurry in the main map, and sometimes it's difficult to tell things apart.

What do you guys do to make the graphics look good? Any hints?

Neocore_Kate is right -- this game is gorgeous on higher resolutions. You should play around with your video settings/update graphics card/drivers, etc.

No matter what you guys say this is not my case. I have a large monitor where most things look great. KA doesn't.

Maybe I had unreasonably high expectations regarding the quality of this game's graphics, but I'm by no means convinced by your arguments. Even in very high detail level, tree and mountain textures are hardly impressive. Also, the characters that depict armies and missions on the map are hard to make out. The fact that you have dark figures against dark backgrounds doesn't help unless you really go to extremes with contrast/lightness/gamma.

The possibility to tint the land in a given color according to its ruler (much like the political mapmode in EU3) would help a lot.

Can you post a screenshot ? There must be something wrong. It is strange, because the game look really great. I play 1900*1200, and to be honest, I think it looks better than the recent shogun TW 2 (at least, until they patch it with AA) as far as the level of details is concerned (TW has better animations imho).
