I'm trying to create a bunch of human empires based on the colonial empires from the Age of Sail. The ones I have in mind would be based on the British, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Dutch empires from the 16th to 18th century.

How should I go about it? What kinds of governments, ethos and traits should I use for theses?

They're suppose to be human, but great start. :D

I also though of Trade League for the Not-Dutch.

For Spain, I'm thinking Fanatical Spiritualist Despotic Empire with an Exalted Priesthood who would impose caste systems on subject empires.
For Britain, they could be a Plutocratic Oligarchy or a Representative Democracy with a Parliamentary System, and they would also have a distinguished admiralty.

I'm not sure for France or Portugal, though France could be a Despotic Empire with an Aristocratic Elite.

Would those work?

What other historical colonial empires or thalassocracies should I need to put in space?

I'd make space Britain xenophobic. After all, they pretty much invented modern race theory. Actually xenophobe-egalitarian democracy would be deliciously interesting. There's of course a lot of different... well, ways to see these things, as probably nearly all early modern societies would be autoritarian, spiritualist and xenophobe to a some degree.

Yeah this

Britain in the age of sail was a plutocratic merchant republic more or less. Fan. Materialist / xenophobe.
I'd give them nomadic, quarrelsome, adaptive, wasteful, distinguished admiralty, fox portraits

Spain shouldn't be a Barbaric despoiler. They didn't do the pirate /slave raider thing on the scale that the Portuguese and others did.

I'd make Spain militarist, spiritualist, xenophobe, resilient, conformist, decadent, repugnant, efficient bureaucracy, imperial cult. Portraits... Hmm maybe cat portraits

I see.

Okay then...

Empire of Andalus (Spain)
  • Militarist, Fanatic Spiritualist, Xenophobe
  • Resilient, Conformist, Decadent, Repugnant
  • Efficient Bureaucracy, Exalted Priesthood
They still have Exalted Priesthood because NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!

Because they're French. ;)
If you make the French frogs then make the British into a can of baked beans...

If the Stellaris empires are supposed to capture the (imagined) spirit of those historical empires then their portraits should have them all kind of in the same class, not one being wily animals and the other being a culinary prejudice
