Since 1.5.1, the Trials-by-Combat social tradition has been made only available to North Germanic. But North Germanic already have their unique form of that tradition with Performative honor that mutually exclusive with it. Please make it available to everyone again, as it basically a dead tradition now.

Making this suggestion has it seem that change was an intentional change by the dev instead of a oversight.
Hi there @iniudan!

Thanks for the report. I've checked with our dev team and was informed that this is working as designed. Trial by Combat was very rare outside of northern realms in medieval times. We do however have events with duel outcomes for every culture!

Cheers!

I agree with this. Just because something didn't happen historically does not necessarily mean that it *couldn't* happen in an alternate history.

Also, the fact that north germanics already have a unique version of this tradition makes the decision to restrict it to north germanic even more questionable.

As I noted in the original thread as well, the shieldmaiden tradition, which is probably even more questionable to have even existed at all, is still unlimited which is strange.

My personal opinion: The shieldmaiden tradition should also be available to everyone. The north germanics can have their unique combination of trials by combat and shieldmaidens with performative honor, but everyone else should be able to pick them separately if they want.

And yes, this is completely independent from how historically accurate this tradition is.

I’m not saying remove it moreso that their logic is questionable. Why limit something that objectively did exist due to “historical rarity” but leave in something else that was even more rare to non-existent using that same rationale. Especially since, at least in 867 it’s effectively unusable unless you remove it’s upgraded version first.

It doesn't even make sense that it would be restricted to North Germanic cultures, because the alternative (better?) version of the tradition that unlocks Shildmaidens is restricted to them already.

I thought the whole point of this tradition was that it was slightly worse because it was generic and available to everyone.

I agree wholeheartedly. Especially if you're making a custom culture. I get the historical aspect but if I can reform Christianity to have ritual cannibalism I should be allowed to reform my tribal culture to allow settling matters by the sword if I wish.

(Wikipedia at least claims there were trials by combat of sorts in the HRE, France, UK, and Ireland but those were uncommon.)
