When you meet a new species they introduce themselves and you answer something depending on your ethos. I wish there was some effect to this, because I've started just skipping it and clicking whatever. For example there could be a relations bonus if their ethos matched whatever you picked, a malus if it's opposite and a bigger effect, positive or negative, for the 3rd option. Just anything that makes picking one of the three options an actual choice would do though.

so it does nothing except being flavor? i assumed it would have some influence on the species initial stance towards you. like a pacifist being a bit pissy if you start with "our warriors greet you"

I also read somewhere that the response you pick should have an effect on your initial relationship score with that empire. However, since at that point the only clue you have about their ethos is the background behind the alien, it comes down to luck/guesswork...

It's just fluff. I don't remember where, but a developer said so

How about giving a +20 relation bonus if your answer matches one of their ethos's(honestly what's the plural of ethos, I don't know), therefore negating the new contact modifier? Of course it 'd go down over time, maybe matching the new contact modifier.
Logically greeting them with an opposing ethos should give a slight malus. Nothing gamechanging, but imo nice to have.
