Colonizers being able to increase dev of provinces was a nice addition. Because end game you would sit with idle colonizers. Merchants are always used and you can either make them transfer or collect. Diplomats are the most diverse, they can do so many functions. But missionaries can just convert provinces. Could you add a secondary function to missionaries? Such as:

- Decreasing unrest of that province/state if it is the same religion as your nation.

- Cultural conversion that doesn't take diplo points but instead just costs you ducats of the missionary manteinance.

- Send them to the Curia (they are disabled on your end) for X months and gain bonus Papal Influence/Church Power/Fervor. It could be called "train Missionaries" or "Influence in the Church" or something like that.

Just some thoughts.

This could be done while the missionary is idling: produce monthly influence and other powers.

Maybe they could also be used for increasing tolerance of true faith for a while, at a cost? Like a few ducats/month for 1 year (scaled with your income). It can be good counter to Sinner personality.

This is pretty brilliant

You could also implement this directly
Each idle Missionary increases Tolerance of the True Faith by 1

Another option is to go with the Colonizer route, and add it to Merchant as well
Colonizer increases Manpower
Missionary increases Tax
Merchant increase Trade

Your message sparked me an idea. Why missionaries cannot be attached to colonizers/sent to colonies? We could send missionary to a colony alongside with colonist, who will increase the native assimilation chance of that particular colony. This chance increase depends on the missionary strenght of the parent country. Of course, this action will have cost but it can be fixed like the colony cost (1-2 ducats per colony per month)

Like spies to boost the religious instability of a nation?
I'd like to see alternative type of battle (that can be view with the relative map mode): merchant wars, spy war, religious war.
A player player playing historically/roleplaying should have other option to decrease the other nations, not only with the armies.
