Hey, so with Holy Fury coming out eventually, it occurred to me I might as well mention my experience.

Skip down to the big === line if you don't want to hear my background story of why i'm making this suggestion.

So, I was playing an Ironman game as England awhile back, started off in the earliest 769 (or whatever year it is, the Charlemagne one) start date, and played as I think Mercia. Built up, took over the British Isles, formed the Empire of Brittania, and by the time I quit playing that save around the 1200s or so I controlled almost all of France and Spain (there were a couple of one-country holdouts in Spain that were vassals of people in the Arabian peninsula so I couldn't be bothered to sail all the way there to take one county) and a small bit of northern Russia where Novgorod would be in EU4. Anyway, at the Climax of the game before a weird abdication bug happened (don't ask, don't worry, it's not a big deal) and removed my artifact inventory, I had something like 30+ artifacts, including many Magnum Opuses, several top-tier jewelry, weapon, and other artifacts, and the sort. It was very hard to sort through them all.

In another game, granted it was on a mod, I was playing the During the End mod and at the height of my campaign similarly had ridiculous amounts of artifacts.

In both games, every single time a ruler died I'd auto-equip different artifacts, and it was very frustrating because my treasury inventory would re-sort itself every time a character of mine died, making it hard to find the items, and if there was a plague rolling through town I'd have to pause for like 5-10 minutes at a time to sort out my inventory.

=========================================================================

So, here's my suggestion to help reduce the need for that. Make it so there's either a drag-and-drop system for artifacts, or maybe make it some kind of drop-down menu of items with a side-panel that opens up to show artifact information that sorts alphabetically, or something. Something that actually sorts the artifacts instead of just throwing them haphazardly into the inventory menu would be much appreciated.

Thanks CK2 team if you read this, I love your games!

I thought there was an earlier post on the topic of artifact sorting, but I couldn't find anything other than "Split The Treasury Into Artifacts And Books".

I put together something to see what it could look like, but on later thought it might not be as well suited for the game as I intended. I don't think there are any hard-coded item slots, but rather that any item with a defined slot value is mutually exclusive from any other item with the same value. If they make a "character view" with a set number of slots, it would not be as future proof / mod-friendly as the current solution.

A simpler (and arguably better) solution would be to add sorting buttons (by name and type-slot), or a search box where you can type in item name or type.

The current system is a bit messy once you get a few items, especially as all of the books, ingredients, and trinkets are placed in the same list as the items you might try to compare and equip. I hope something is done to alleviate this issue.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was suggesting, either some kind of system where it is, at a minimum, at least ordered from A to Z or whatever for ease of scrolling through, or to have a search box. What I meant by the drag-and-drop system, to clarify, was to perhaps be able to actually manually sort your inventory whatever way you wanted, but I think the way succession works may not allow that since I believe it is manually taking each item one by one from one character and giving them to another, based on the fact that the order always seems to randomize on character death, which suggests that's what's going on, and not a consistent dynastic inventory, which makes sense seeing as it's not a "core" function of the game.

But, yeah, I think something that allows for some sorting filters, maybe a list mode instead of the image system we have now, where you see the image after clicking on it or something, might be better. Heck, again, I'd settle for something as simple as just having the artifact menu auto-sort itself alphabetically when opened rather than what I'm guessing is the order of obtaining, which while they may share similar dates of acquisition, I'd imagine they got brought in in a semi-random order as determined by the arbitrariness of the game, or maybe there is some randomizing mechanic, I don't know, I don't peer into the game code too much.

I've recommended in another thread that the best solution would be to institute a simple customization file and folder structure like you can now do with save games. A player could for example create one folder called "Books", another called "Weaponry" and move his objects between them using click and drag or cut and paste.
