What are your favorite major countries to play with and why? And what about ones you avoid or even never played with and why?

My favorites:
1. France- favorite by far, strong enough yet still a challenge beacuse of mighty Germany
2. Italy- same with France (not too strong but with lot's of potential). Little less entartaining. Don't like you jump into war straight away (Ethiopia).

Others I rarely or haven't played at all:
1. Germany- played twice, too strong. And I like to be underdog.
2. USA- played once, it wasn't much of a fun. You are too powerful and nobody attacks you. Boring.
3. Soviet Union- never played, don't like to manage vast territories.
4. UK- never played, it seems like a managment nightmare with all those overseas territories and colonies.
5. Japan- never played, not a fan of Pacific theater.

Most: Soviet Union (recent achievement hunting), Japan in mods because it's often indicative into how balanced the mod is.
Least: UK & USA, because Naval Combat is still meh.

From the most played to the least:

Soviet Union, because most combat are on land (I don't like naval stuff) and it offers a lot of replayability by choosing different paths, even when using historical mods railroading the player. Also, I'm more interested in the Eastern Front.
Germany, because again most campaigns are on land and it has a great sense of progression. Instead of getting overwhelmed by having to reorganize a 2m men strong army right at the start of the game, you're actually building your country and getting stronger as you advance.
USA, not a big fan of the naval stuff but it's also the most OP country, which means it's almost impossible to really lose when playing as the USA. So I find it very good to test new mechanics, a new mod or even a new HoI game.
France, again few naval stuff but also more limited than the other majors, making it challenging. I play it sometimes.
Italy, not really a big fan. It feels a lot like a minor plus there are lots of naval stuff to do. Moreover it has a shitty army.
UK, literally played it only once, to get the world conquest achievement. Too much colonies, too much navy stuff, not really a big fan.
Japan, never played it. Ever, not in a single HoI game (and I've been playing since HoI2). Mostly because I feel like if I want to defeat the USA, I should be pretty good with the naval mechanisms, except that I don't like it and usually don't learn much.

the UK is the only major country that I have really enjoyed playing and have actually finished the war with - I've been struggling to find another that is as fun for me.

It's engaging all the way through, because you have to constantly put pressure on the Axis or they will quickly take over the world, but you still have a position of relative safety which you can retreat to and regroup if you take a loss.

Most:
Germany: as they kind of control the flow of the game in historical mode so you can somewhat pace yourself, also it’s fun to build up your army and industry so quickly and launching Barbarossa can be a lot of fun. But mostly I play them in order to have a more controlled experience rather than I just love to play as Germany.

UK and US: I’ve played these a lot but always end up being disappointed, would love to play these a lot more than I do but the moment I invade anywhere my supply is flooded by the allies, also the lack of ability to coordinate naval invasions always ruins my d-day plans. I just don’t get the sense that I truly have to prepare to invade and liberate Europe and if I wished I could invade in 42-43. But I do love managing the naval game as them

Soviets: When Hoi4 first came out I played them a lot and when the Soviet focus tree comes I imagine I’ll be putting a lot of hours into them. But as of right now with the old focus tree it’s somewhat bland.

Least:
France: I’ve played the a few and honestly they were fun, for some reason I don’t play them more but I probably should.(I just realized I haven’t played them with the new focus tree yet......)

Italy: I’ve never played Italy, not even once. I guarantee their a blast to play but for some odd reason I just never want to play as them and I can’t quite put my finger on as to why.

USA for learning how to move and small production in 1.3. era, USSR for large unit wanderings, and huge manpower pools .
Germany, once, did the Rhineland focus and was DW'd by France and UK on the day after that focus finished ... died in May'36 (still in 1.3. hair-trigger) .
Many games interrupted by the 'mission creep' from 1.3.-ish through 1.9.3; I still cannot get 'battle planner' to behave, so I've learned how to 'mega-micro' as a work around .
UK to try to figure out fleets and their uses and movements .

Personal go-tos:
I've played Germany a lot, because they're the main characters of the game, go to speak, and because HoI4 being what it is right now, the game plays best when a player is in charge of Deutschland. Also, building up from a small nation to a powerhouse stretching from the Atlantic in the west to deep into the Soviet Union is quite an experience.

The Soviet Union for the titanic, war-determining struggle between Communism and Nazism on the eastern front.

Britain because Britain. Also the naval action is fun, and you have holdings the world over to fight over, while at the same time not being a powerhouse, meaning you have to make do with what you have much of the time. Also, it's Britain.

Neglected:
France. I just don't feel a draw towards playing as them. Being on the defensive can be fun, and I tried once to play them until they fell, for then to switch to the British, but in the end they just don't interest me.

The USA. I've had a few abortive attempts with these guys, but there's something about being so "OP", and having to sit there doing nothing for so many years, that means I just never get around to committing to a full campaign with them. I know I can join the war early, but I'm afraid that will just mess up game balance and make the war way too easy to win. At least in Kaiserreich you have a potential civil war and other domestic matters to contend with.

Japan. I suppose it's just that as a European, I don't feel much of a draw towards the events of the PTO. I've played China a fair few times, but to me, the WWII Japanese are just these bad guys out in the Pacific who I can't really relate to.

Most played: Germany. The entire reason I bought the game was because I found out Germany had a Monarchist path. The chance to conquer the world and not have to look at Hitler's stupid moustache (seriously.... the man thinks he deserves to rule Europe with facial hair like that?) in the process was too good to pass up! I've done so many games as Germany I can't count them all. Haven't played it much recently as I've been achievement farming, but Germany's 'cheevos were the first ones I got.

Second most played: Italy. I avoided these guys for a long time because they have a navy, and I dislike playing the naval game (that's not to say I dislike the naval mechanics; I love MTG, but I hate having a third front to worry about in addition to the land war and the air war) but I gave them a chance when I discovered a mod that fleshed them out a bit more. I've since played quite a bit without the mod as well. They are a fun country, despite having the worst focus tree of any major. Also, playing these guys led me to discover the sweet joy of naval bombers.

Third most played: Japan. Once I choked down my bile at the prospect of playing another country with an Xbox huge navy, I found a lot to like here. I usually avoid war with the US (because who wants to invade late game America?) and focus on China or the USSR, but sometimes I go Good Guy Hirohito and throw down with Germany. That usually confuses the heck out of Britain and France, but they never complain about the help. Manchuria makes a great wild card on non-historical, because you've got to balance building them up with keep an eye out for Puyi's sudden yet inevitable betrayal.

Least played: Britain and France. Britain has a decent focus tree, but never enough manpower to do anything fun. France has been a pain in my rear. I can never hold out against Germany for long before I get overrun, and there's no point in playing a "major" country that spends most of the war as a minor. So I usually switch to fascist ASAP and join Germany, if only to stay in the game longer.

Never played: USSR and USA. Russia just seems a bit too daunting for me at the moment. That's an awful lot of land to deal with, an awful lot of sub-par manpower in the field, and an industry that doesn't seem to get moving until mid to late game. Also, their tree has only one alternate history scenario, and it's just "Communism, but with a different moustache in charge". The USA has never seemed interesting to me. Spending the first half of the game doing nothing but building up industry and navy and waiting for Japan to invite me into the war (assuming they even go fascist as I play non-historical most times) doesn't seem all that fun. The alternate history scenarios don't spin my wheels much, either.

Most played is probably the UK followed by Japan. The UK's MTG tree is just so much fun and in my sense one of the 3 best trees in the game. I don't think I have even explored all the options. Japan on the other hands I'm not sure why but I kinda like it. It shares the fact that you have to fight with Army, Navy and Airforce combined and shouldn't skip any of the three. Japan has less theaters everywhere around the world than the Uk so it places it below. I like having multiple fronts far away from one another to handle for some reasons.
Don't ask me why but I kinda like Japanes's democratic path.

Middle ground are Italy and France. Italy I used to play a lot but recently I feel like I've explored a lot of what the country has to offer with its basic tree. i'm looking forward to more options and will definitely pick it up again when it gets revamped. France is the reverse, I used to never play it but I've dipped my feet in it with laR and it's not as disappointing as I expected it to be. I'm looking forward to more France games.

The USA I've played a little but it feels like half the game is waiting and the other half is steamrolling. Only fun I've had was playing the civil wars options and even those were correct but eh, Spain did it much better and still offer a challenges long after the civil war is over. Germany and the Soviet Union I've never really been a fan to begin with, although I'll look into a USSR rework tree if it has some unique things to do that don't involve US-styles of waiting followed by US-styles of slaughtering everything because you're just too big to begin with.

Now why I don't like Germany I can't really say. I feel like it's meant to be the powerhouse of the game (without germany there would e little conflict to begin with and the game would morph into slow af hot cold war simulator) and for some reasons I don't find that very fun. just slaughtering everything is... meh. Besides I feel like the Axis is pretty much Germany-only so far, there's hardly any diplomacy or coordination involved (at least in single player). You' basically just gonna do everything alone. That's no fun. Evern in my Napoleon game I coordinated a bunch of stuff with my buddies the Poles.

Question of opinions of course. After all I'm the guy who has the most fun with Mexico and the Netherlands so it's no wonders of the majors the ones I like the least are the strongest to begin with. As strange as it may sound I like it when my options are limited so that I have to find the right way to reach my goal, while when you're playing a big powerful major all the ways lead to Rome at some point considering how much you can snowball. At least that's how it feels. Aaanyway~

I've only put in 400 hours so I haven't played Japan, Italy or Germany yet but the most fun I've had is probably with China. They might not look like a major but if you combine all of their core territory they start out with a total of 70 factories which puts them behind only the US and Soviets, and it can build up pretty quickly. Gameplay is very forgiving as you are given more manpower than every other faction combined so it's very relaxing to just throw more manpower to fix every problem you come across. You're all but invincible in SP.

UK has a lot to manage, but their starting Navy can systematically destroy every other navy that's built by every other country. I've destroyed the US, France, Germany, Italy, and Japanese navies by 1941 without researching a single naval tech and just having a single destroyer and cruiser line of starting ships being built for reserves. They also start with the second largest army in the world and can go through everyone but Germany the Soviets and Japan with it.

US is really boring during the build up, they are also never in danger of being naval invaded in SP. You basically just point and click where to send your armies against the axis and never have to defend yourself.

Soviets have a boring single minded focus tree. Whether Germany can push you back initially or not determines whether you're ever presented with a challenge.

Spain is a lot of fun too but they're not a major.

Have enjoyed playing UK and France, plan a Little Entente campaign in the future (possibly another achievement campaign) and and looking at a future UK -vs- Fascist World with Japan, USA and Mexico joining the Axis.

Have yet to play Germany, Italy or the Soviets. Can't get into playing the bad guys, though I did have a fun world conquest as Japan and would like to try another with collaborator governments.

Frequently played:
-Germany:
I'm not a particularly good player, and I enjoy being able to play as the "main country" of the game and expect to be successful. Germany is definitely overpowered, but if it wasn't, the game would be pretty boring and new players would have a hard time getting acquainted with HOI4. The Kaiser path is probably my favorite tree in the game.

-Italy: I have tried time and again to restore the Roman Empire but have thus far been unsuccessful. Like Germany, I think Italy is good for new players, but to a lesser extent than Germany (the game's tutorial is notoriously unhelpful in my opinion). I will definitely play as Italy more when it gets a new focus tree in the future.

-France: You start in a vulnerable, defensive position as France, and that's what makes them fun to play. France is one of the few countries I have fun playing as a democracy which is a nice change of pace from the fascist-centric meta. The new focus tree finally gave me the opportunity to defeat Germany as France, but I fear it has made France too easy to play as. The monarchist paths that were recently introduced provide some nice replayability though.

-United Kingdom: As the world's leading naval power, you don't have to worry much about naval superiority as the UK, which is great. Like France, this country is fun to play as a democracy (a rarity in this game), although the other paths provide a lot of great opportunities as well. I have extensively complained on these forums about the decolonization tree in this country's focus tree, and some lacking flavor options the UK suffers from, but overall the British are fun to play.

-Soviet Union: This country is fun because you start with a giant army that you can use to rush some combination of China, Finland, Iran, Iraq, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Turkey, or even Germany if you are good enough. I feel that the Soviets are a good country to play as if you just want to conquer as much as you can with little consequence. Going fascist adds totally new dynamics - you can totally bypass the Trotskyist problems (skip the civil war if you flip fast enough) and compete against Germany for the allegiance of non-aligned and fascist countries in your backyard. The main problem here is the focus tree is very weak. I can't wait for it to get updated sometime.

Seldom played:
-Japan:
One you get all the achievements I feel there aren't many exciting things to do as Japan. You start off in an insanely strong position as a leading naval power with a giant army, and can pretty much take down anyone you want as soon as you want. The difference between Germany and Japan is the heavy emphasis on the navy and a very dull focus tree. I don't like playing with navies and Japan's focus trees are very short when they aren't unrealistic enough to be immersion-ruining.

-United States: For the half the game you just sit around waiting unless you want to fight an incredibly forced civil war that has no reason to be in the game. When you're finally ready to fight it's just a slow grind to defeat whatever countries have been allowed to build up while you've been restricted by the Great Depression and the avoidable-to-the-point-of-wasted-development-time Congress mechanics.

Most played:
- UK. The naval side still needs plenty of work but it is good fun and the alt history paths are also quite well worked imo. You will be forced into war at some point, whatever choice you make
- Italy. Not joining Germany and striking out alone creates a fun playthrough with a much higher chance of success imo.
- Soviets. If I just fancy a titanic land battle where else would you look?
Least played:
- USA. Meh. OP.
- Japan. Can't get into it for some reason.
- Germany. I know it is only a game but the idea of implementing Sea Lion... nope.
