Am I getting this right, there's no benefit to the province from being declared your main trading port? It just affects which TN you collect for free from and gives the TN-specific +5 TP?

So if I'm Poland->Commonwealth I should not be putting in the logical seeming Danzig that everyone and their dog will claim, but some safer province like Chelmno or Samogitia that no one will take even if I lose a war?

Yes that's right.

Aslong as you build up the same trade buildings. I dont think so.

No, but that's the thing, I don't see anything that the buildings would affect. The +5 goes directly to the trade node rather than the province. Some backwater without port seems to work just as well as an important center of trade at an estuary.

Correct, the only thing that matters is the node that the trading port is in, which is also why you can't move it from one province to another in the same node.

Though that doesn't make Danzig a bad option, it just makes that the exact same option as any other province in the Baltic Sea node. If someone does conquer Danzig, your trade port will simply relocate to another province in the Baltic Sea (provided you still have one).

Oh, I assumed it would go back to the capital. In that case it doesn't matter.

Not at all. I'd say take Danzig and move your TN to Baltic Sea, and put a merchant in Krakow TN to send trade to Baltic TN. It's a lot of money that will boost your start.

Bordeaux and English Channel are both end nodes so you'll want to collect in both (and Sevilla too after you eat Spain and you will eat Spain because you're France so why not?). Trade capital in one, merchant in the other. EC probably better overall since you can steer a lot of the trade that would go into Bordeaux up there, but you still need to collect in Bordeaux to get any of the local trade value.

That would depend on the situation, like the competition in each node and the value of the node.
If you have little competition on the other node, then you can probably just toss a merchant in there instead of keeping it a trading port, since the penalty to your TP will not affect the share of the pie you are getting out of that node much.
