I was wondering if the pagan Magyars are going to have some sort of raid mechanic like the Vikings. One of the most famous things about this period were the Hungarian raids deep into France, etc. Many people saw them as the return of the Avars and Huns. Is anything simulating this going to be included in the Old Gods?

(No, I'm not a Hungarian nationalist)

And what about the Sarracen raids on the Mediterranean coasts? They have to be implemented also!

And if I remember well: wasn't it a basic tactic of warfare for the Byzantine themes, and also used by the Arabic states opposing them?

The Carolingian themselves practiced this form of warfare, which was so common in these times: it was the case for Charlemagne against the Avars, against the Muslims in Spain, against the Britons, and so on. What about the border regions between Wales and England? Maybe this famous Offa's Dyke wasn't really intended to block raids, but nevertheless it must have occured...

So: RAIDS FOR ALL!

Now, that I think about it, quite a lot of people in the Middle Ages engaged in raiding activities. Among these were the... Crusaders. County of Edessa and the Principality of Antioch were quite frequently engaging in raiding Muslim and Byzantine cities. Plunder was quite all they cared about besides bickering between themselves.

That doesn't exactly look like minor raids to me. In fact this was what the Hungarians did for one hundred years during which they burned down cities and town unopposed and destroyed any army that opposed them until 955 which made them one if not the most formidable force on the continent during this time period.

That map is so wrong until the early 11 century the nortweast of the Dunabe was Bulgarian control and i've never heard Magyars making a raid in bulgarian lands before 1000 AD

God I hate annoying Bulgarian nationalists.

The Hungarians conquered the Carpathian Basin in 895,they quickly began raiding any nearby states and pillaged Northern Italy as soon as 900. Soon after they began expanding into the surrounding area annihilating and annexing the Moravians in 902. During the same time they drove out the Bulgarians from the South Eastern fringes of the Carpathian basin. Then after a couple decades of raiding they launched five major invasions into Bulgarian territory between 934 and 965 devastating the nation. Not only that they kept going and reached the walls of Constantinople which was probably the only thing that stopped them from raiding Asia Minor.

What I would like to hear about in a Dev Diary, is:

1) How will the mechanic for migrations work?
Is it just going to be the same thing we have now where over time a random event may pop in your new province changing the culture? This era was not far removed from a period of mass migration (not to confused with assimilation), and of course the Magyars are going to do exactly that.

2) What new cultures will be added to the map? Can we have a list?????
I would love to see a varied diaspora of many peoples, even those who are probably not going to last. I want to see some pockets of remaining Latin speaking Romans, Goths, etc.

I think it would be pretty cool to have a mechanic similar to Rome Total War where as a nomadic people you can field huge armies but have essentially no developed land. Then after a while you are given a choice to settle down if you control at least one city. Then the provinces you control at the time that you settle down will become your culture.

what a load of bul...
All bulgarian hungarian conflicts were won by bulgaria until 1000 ad when hungarians were turning the tide.Large part of the carpathia basin was under bulgarian rule but as the hungarians were seeking more aliances and the bulgars were losing them everything came crashing down in the early 11 century when the bulgar had no more alliances and were conquered in 1018

Now I will destroy your terrible argument with your own source

When they learned of Svatopluk's death, the Hungarians pulled back, though apparently only as far as the region of the Upper Tisza. In spring 895, Árpád followed with his army and, after some skirmishes on the Great Plain, brought the Bulgarians' rule to an end.

As I said they seized the Carpathian Basin in 895

When the Hungarians arrived to settle in the Carpathian Basin, they encountered little resistance on the part of the Bulgarians. The small but noteworthy communities implanted by the Bulgarians in Transylvania and between the Tisa and Danube did not even have the option of fleeing from the Hungarians, who came in overwhelming force.

As I said any remaining Bulgarian lands in the area were taken quickly.

The opportunity came with the formation (ca. 932) of a Pecheneg–Hungarian alliance. It is possible that the gyula Bogát had acted earlier, but if not, he must have seized this chance to occupy southern Transylvania. In breaking the Bulgars' resistance, the Hungarians were helped not only by their Pecheneg allies but also by the internal struggle — exacerbated by Byzantine meddling — over the succession to Czar Simeon, who died in 927. This may have presented Bogát's successor, the gyula Zombor, with the opportunity to occupy the land lying between the Maros, Tisza, and Danube rivers.

Having seized southern Transylvania from the Bulgarians, Bogát's warriors and their servants settled down in Slavic villages along the lower reaches of the Küküllő rivers.

As I said they launched many invasions.

It was a sign of the gyulas' enhanced power that they launched the first Hungarian campaigns against Byzantium, cutting through the weakening defenses of the Bulgarians. According to Byzantine chronicles, the first campaign occurred in 934;[1] it ended in a peace treaty between Emperor Peter I of Bulgaria and the Hungarians. Another campaign, in 943, was terminated in similar fashion, and the Byzantines probably had to pay tribute.

And as I said they even attacked and defeated the Byzantines.

Really Bulgaria was nearly a non-factor at this point, all they did was quake in fear of the Hungarians and hid behind the Pechenegs to deter them while they barely held off the Byzantines.
