you can delay it. As long as the mage bane helm is at the Crossing at the end of the game there is no ill effects in having taken it. It gets brought up later with Turon but thats relatively minor affair if you have high favor with him. You can always return the helm at a later date to the old man in charge of the Crossing.

So when do we actually get this quest, do we get notified to meet someone about it or do I have to go around looking for a quest giver? I have a feeling I am almost done with act 2 and I still only have the first tower open and the other one I have been to I can't get to work and I hear it is tied to the quest for this helm. I have a feeling it is something I can't miss but I am starting to wonder. There is just so much I am suppose to be able to do at my home tower yet I have none of the things like the forge, etc..

The gist of the Magebane questline is that someone takes the helmet, you pursue this person in another area outside of Lethian's Crossing and end up in a bane-filled dungeon where you pick up the final piece of the puzzle required to unlock the second tower (as well as finding out that this dungeon leads to the second tower). Oh, and you get the chance to retrieve the Magebane helmet too.
