Madagascar

I wanted to suggest that Madagascar is reworked. It is bigger than France and the second largest Island on earth and has only 3 provinces in eu4 wt. Also it was very late colonized and there was a kingdom established which tried to form an alliance with Germany before it got colonized.
There were various kingdoms and they were unified into one kingdom of Madagascar.I find this very interesting and it would be nice if it was reworked it would give the Indian ocean region more flavor.

Sumatra has straits that let you walk to Malacca and Java though. Britain has a strait to Ireland, and its nations are western so it's quicker to get things like exploration going.

But I guess a 2-3 tag Madagascar would be pretty similar to Borneo indeed. One tag would really be too few though, because it means you've got nothing to do before you're in a position to invade Kilwa or get a colonisation idea.

Oh, I'd love to have a 20+ province, 15+ tag Madagascar, don't get me wrong. But I don't see any chance of Paradox doing that, not when other, more played, parts of the world are nowhere near that detailed.

Besides the Vazimba/Merina tag I suggested, what other tags could be present in 1444? Menabe and Boina would be the best two states to add (not coincidentally, they are the namesakes of two of the three current provinces), but Wikipedia gives foundation dates of 1540 and 1690 respectively. Both were Sakalava states, and the Sakalava article mentions a Sakalava state based at Menabe before the split that led to the foundation of both states, so that may be a way to extend Menabe back to the game start (a Sakalava/Menabe tag to match a Vazimba/Merina tag). Looking at the rest of the articles linked in the History of Madagascar article, there otherwise isn't much to work with to get tags back to the game's start from what I'm seeing though.


But in the end, no matter what, a three-province Madagascar is ridiculous in comparison to the detail of virtually the rest of the world (not to mention its immediate environs!), and the fact there isn't at the very least a Merina tag when the state ruled virtually the entire island by the end of the game period is a travesty.

If nothing else, you can always pitch it to one of the mod dev teams. I myself am working on an Andes overhaul that will eventually be incorporated into M&T.

Good idea! Paradox should indeed add flavour and add more to Eastern African and Indian ocean region.

It would be ideal that Comoros archipelago would province of its own, as it has great strategical value, but if not they should probably be part of Mozambique.

Thanks to game zooming, you don't really notice the huge size of it, unless you specifically check for it, you wouldn't imagine that Madagascar is larger than Great Britain.

Yep, Although it is less than a third of the uk's population, I think it should have 8-10 total provinces and a few tribes and kingdoms(perhaps) ;P

Don't forget we could also have some Sulu-like events for the local kingdoms. The island could start with 1-2 tags and then more would appear shortly after the 1444 start date in the empty provinces.

At the very least, I like this idea because having tags own Madagascar would mean that it couldn't randomly be colonized in 1500. If not because it adds flavor to a part of the world that's lagging, seeing Madagascar owned by some random European country every game hurts my brain.

Just like that thread about the Philippines; Madagascar needs an expansion, definitely, but it doesn't need to be inflated with provinces and tags. I can see four or five new provinces and a tag or two, but there are plenty of other things (and places; Japan, Britain and Scandinavia have still yet to get expanded or revised, and Russia, Greece, France and Portugal are still wonky) that take priority, especially considering not much happened on Madagascar that affected the greater region during this time.

Madagascar is the fourth-largest island in the world, not the second (after Greenland, New Guinea, and Borneo).

Wouldn't Australia technically qualify as an island? I know it's a continent, but still...

I agree, although I would suggest a slightly higher number of new provinces (5 to 7 maybe - compare to similar-sized Borneo and Sumatra). Honestly, while it would be nice to have say 3 tags in Madagascar, only Merina would seem to me to be of vital importance. And while the comparison to the Philippines thread is apt in that there are people getting carried away with what needs to be added, Madagascar has a couple of things that the Philippines didn't - it stayed almost entirely independent and almost totally united under a native state until well after the game period.

Honestly aside from islands and the colonial regions (the cape should become a colonial region though) they should just get rid of colonial provinces, the colonialism outside of the americas worked diffrently it's as simple as that, there were already nations present in most places. Protectorates and some way to turn those over to your trade companies should be the way to go.

True (though I think seven might be a bit overkill - Sumatra was much more densely populated than Madagascar, if I recall correctly), though one could argue that Madagascar wasn't colonized simply because the costs weren't worth it to most European nations, especially considering they could simply snatch a few enclaves from the Sultanates on the coast. My primary concern is that it won't just end up being another Siberian tribe.
