My guess is having a Monarch killed would result in a hefty on the spot prestige hit - and I'll bet good money that having negative prestige, in the middle of a war, while choosing a new Monarch is a big-time bad thing.

(Ie. Dynastic crisis, increased war exaustion, forced peace treaty, large loss of warscore. Ooooh the possibilities!)

Erik (XIV) was quite bad at the end of his rule, otherwise has wasn't all that bad under his rule. Gustav IV must have been of of the more mediocre ones though...

MrT hinted that there would be nasty repercussions if players intentionally killed bad monarchs by sending them off to die in a war.

In spite of Portugal's blessing of chronical incompetence, its worst monarchs would usually be compensated by excellent ministers. Right now, I recall King Afonso VI (who could not move the left part of his body and suffered from a peculiar type of schyzophrenia) who was "saved" by his Prime-Minister, the Count of Castelo-Melhor. We also have the example I gave of the Marquis of Pombal, Minister to King Joseph I (weak-minded and easily manipulated).
José I wasn't that bad. He was not mad or seriously incompetent, at least.

As for Afonso VI and Castelo-Melhor, there was quite a lot of political manoeuvering about who got to guide the country for the king. Until 1662, the king's mother had the regency (even if Afonso was 19 at the time), and Castelo-Melhor and his friends got into power by forcefully ending the regency in a sort of coup. He exercised power for some years, but was always opposed by the king's brother Pedro, and it was Pedro (together with the king's wife) who finally started the movement to end Afonso's reign in 1667.

As for stability on the international stage, the only stability in Afonso's reign was always being at war with Spain. :D
