The unit does not accept its biological constraints and tries to assume the Space-God given grace of our holy flash drives. Such heresy!

If you get the event with the genetic databanks and choose to save them for later, at some point after researching droids you can get the choice of putting their brains into droids. They'll then ask to go build their own home, and if you agree you get the awoken.
They're super weak though because they're droids with an energy malus and can barely pay their own upkeep (~50 years after the event they're still rocking only two planets with 6 pops total despite not being territory blocked by anyone and not participating in any war).

This is from the Limbo event, yeah. With Utopia you (or another empire) can download them into droids or above. They then ask to settle in your empire, giving you a load of free synths (even if you only have droid tech).

You can choose yes (free colony), no (expelling them ascend creating The Awoken) or to disassemble them and wipe their minds (mineral award).

Sounds like another empire found and expelled them. In my current game I also expelled them (I'm playing curious, pacifist Xenophobes) and they also spawned as minor spiritualists. Seems the ethics are randomly generated.
