OK, just got the game today and I am trying to figure money and production first.

So I want to build a factory. Are there any factories that don't require machine parts? As far as I can tell, they all need machine parts. I built one factory and no longer have any machine parts.

The world market doesn't seem to have much availble either. Plus even if I offer to buy at higher than market prices, I am not receiving any.

Without machine parts, how will I build any more factories?

All of the factories available for construction at the start of the Grand Campaign require some machine parts (there are a few late game ones that require electric gear instead). Access to them on the world market is difficult in the first decade or two, but there are a few industry techs that you can research that will give you a small amount of machine parts for free:

5101 - Publishing Industry (+5 Machine Parts)
5102 - Mechanical Production (+5 Machine Parts)
5103 - Interchangeable Parts (+10 Machine Parts)

Hope that helps! :)

Well it is 1848 and I haven't been able to buy a single machine part. I have plenty of money as Austria. I have had zero machine parts for years now and can't build any new factories.

The entire country is in revolt. And I am about to revolt.

I have read the manual and read the FAQ's but this game simply doesn't connect the dots. I can't make any sense out of this game. And I have played EUII for 5 or 6 months now. I spent last night and this morning on it but I don't know how much patience I have left for it.

Manage the machine parts you start with carefully. I have rarelly managed to buy any new ones (though the ai dumps it's stocks, including machine parts on the second day of a new game, exploiting that is a bit gamey, but you might wish to try that). So you should build your initial industries and then sit on the remainder of your stock for emergencies (if a factory is destroyed or downgraded in an accident). As Johnny Canuck said, you gain additional machine parts with various technology advances. Later on you will finally gain the necessary technology to build your own machine parts factory, which I expect becomes the key to further industrialisation. In my current game, as France I built my first machine parts factory in 1858 or so, England and possibly Russia had one earlier I'd guess (England has so far advanced I decided to hang on to their shirt tails and hope they never turn against me).

It might be a good (essential) idea to stock sufficient machine parts to build the required factory. I expect you will be in a very tight situation if you didn't do that.

Jagger,

follow Johny's advice, anyhow looking back on history there are too many machine parts in Victoria 1.03 :(

the economy simply explodes!

I upgraded my total Austria economy in only 3 to 5 years from 80 to 500, the only restraint was money - not machine parts,

First of all you should realise machine parts are meant to be rare in the early part of the game. If you want to buy them get the highest or 2nd highest prestiege, other wise you won't be able to buy any. You should research the techs Johnny mentioned, not only do they give you machine parts the last one (Interchangeable parts) will trigger the invention Precision works which will allow you to build your own machine parts factory.
