Hi,

My characters has this county in Scotland that doesn't have a barony, so whoever has it gets the wrong govt type penalty. When I try to click the little empty square to build a castle, the game crashes. It just comes back to my desktop without any crash report or anything.

Also, the bigger problem I have is that I can't see my autosaves. Every year, the game autosaves itself but when I go into load screen, I only have my manual saves. I didn't manually save for like 6 years and then when I tried to build a castle, my game crashed and I lost a huge progress. I thought it'd be ok since I have the autosaves but nope. They are not saved at all. I searched the game files and they're not there either. Why does this happen!?

I've never played a game that crashes and causes problems as much as CKII. It's getting a little bit frustrating.

Perhaps your autosaves are in the Cloud and your manual saves are local? Or vice versa?

I believe the crash on a particular holding in Scotland is a known bug, but you might search bug reports forum for that.

The crash is fixed somehow. It doesn't crash anymore when I try to build a holding.

But being the extreme computer noob I am, I don't really know where the Cloud or the local save files are located. The only saves I know are in the CKII folder in my documents. It has the file saves which stores all the saves I see when I load my game. I assume you're referring to the Steam Cloud by Cloud. Where are they located and how can I see them?

That is documented in the sticky thread above with "file locations" in it's title. But what i meant was, did you click on both the Cloud and Local save buttons in the game?

Yes. Cloud is totally empty except two broken saves. I delete them every time they appear but they just come back. It doesn't have my actual autosaves. And Local has the ones I saved manually.

Hi, happy new year!

I checked that thread out and looked for local copy of my saves in the exact folder it said, but was unable to find anything new. It was just "autosave, oldautosave, olderautosave" They are the broken ones I see in my load screen but no trace of my actual autosaves.

Sorry, I'm not sure what you are trying to say here - there were autosaves there but no "actual" autosaves? I thought it was the autosaves that you couldn't find?

At the end of every year, the game autosaves itself and those files used to be in the cloud section of the load screen. Now, for some strange reason, the autosave still happens but they do not appear in the cloud folder. Whenever I open the game there are three autosave folders titled, autosave, oldautosave, olderautosave. They don't have the country name and the date as usual and they're all ironman. I delete these saves only to find them the next time I open the game. My actual autosaves are not saved. I looked into the game folders and I only see those corrupted autosaves I see in my load screen, three of them. The game stops for a second and shows autosaving text to me but it never saves. There are no autosave folders created, no where. I have to manually save it all the time.

But Ironman does not make oldautosave or olderautosave - there's only ever one save file, that's part of the point of Ironman. I'm totally puzzled by what you report, it's as if you are not playing Ironman at all.

Can I see your settings.txt please?

What do you see in documents/paradox/ck2/save games/ ?
What do you see in /Users/USER/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/<YOUR STEAM ID>/203770/remote/save games/ ?

I'm sorry if I can't express myself clearly. English is not my native language. I'm not playing on Ironman mode.

In Save Games in my documents, there are 3 folders. Hasting, Hasting2, Ua Braenain. Ua Braenain is empty, it was an old game I stopped playing. Hasting has the saves files of the time when I was a duke. Hasting2 was created after I created the Kingdom of England. It has all my manual saves, like quick saves.

In the save games folder which is in the Steam folder, there are 3 files: autosave.ck2, oldautosave.ck2, olderautosave.ck2

I'm copying my settings.txt

I see you do have autosave to cloud set in there. So I can only assume those autosaves you list in the Steam folder are from this game you are now playing. Are you saying they do NOT display in the game's Load/Cloud tab? Can you open them with a text editor? If so you may be able to see what they are, when and where they are from.

They are displayed in the load/cloud folder however it says BROKEN SAVEGAME in red font under each one of them. When I choose one and hit load, nothing happens. I opened them in Terminal and they all say the same thing.

Terminal? They are text files, not executables. You'd want to try opening them in textedit.app or preferably textwrangler.app .

At first I opened three of them with both Text Editor and Text Wrangler but it was just a blank page. There was nothing in them. So that's why I tried to open it in Terminal.

They're not 0 bytes, are they?

Or, if they are compressed, you can change their extension to .zip and un-compress them in the usual way.

They are 1 byte each.

I compressed it which created a zip file but when I opened it in Text Wrangler, it was still blank. I also changed the extension .zip and tried opening it with Archive Utility and it created another file with the same name but with .zip.cpgz extension. I'm really not computer savvy so I don't know if I did the right things.

If they are 1 byte then they are useless, I'm afraid. There's no point in trying anything; we can't compress 20mb of text into 1 byte just yet!

How that came to be I do not know; we've had issues with corrupt save games but not at all like that. And how it happened to 3 saves in a row is a complete mystery!

If you start a fresh new game does it save and autosave OK?

I've started a new game as the German Kaiser on 26 Dec 1066 start and when it autosaved, it actually worked! I played it for one more year and when it autosaved again, it was working too. But when I went back and tried my English game the autosave didn't work. So I guess the problem is only with that game and not the others. The other game autosaves just fine.
