A poster above mentioned waiting for OS 10.9 as opposed to the current 10.8.5. Whats supposedly going to be the big performance leap between the 2?

MacOS 10.9 will have OpenGL 4.1. Currently 10.8.5 uses OpenGL 3 (and not completely). There're also features like compressed memory and OpenCL which could theoretically help performance, though it seems like the graphics issues are the main issue for Mac users.

I'm not a programmer, FYI, but I have been keeping tabs on this so I can stop playing EU4 using Wineskin! plus, I'm a tech nerd. :happy:

Some of us with specs that don't meet the reqs found that running the PC version of EU4 with wine seems to perform way better than the mac version.. Don't know why. Maybe because wine has DirectX support.

But the launcher doesn't work with wine so we're wondering if there is some other way to activate installed DLCs?
By editing a file or something?

The -forcedlc switch should work.

can somebody explain this, please? i don't know what "the -forcedlc switch" means - where am i supposed to write what?

also, any joy with 1.2 running native?

If the issue truly is OpenGL being behind Direct X, then there may not be much Paradox can do, though I'm curious why I can play the graphically demanding XCOM Enemy Unknown on my MacBook with old OpenGL drivers without an issue whereas EU4, more processor demanding, runs choppy. Granted, XCOM is a year older, but seems like there should be less of an issue than there currently is.

It could very well be that issue, but we can't really be certain unless they actually engage us.

Just out of curiosity (I'm no Mac expert, but I do know NVidia boards).

Have you disabled anti-aliasing? The GeForce 320M isn't a board that's designed with blistering speed in mind. It is, instead, designed for low power while providing driver and feature compatibility with it's faster siblings. It has, for example, only 72 CUDA cores (for comparison, my budget card for gaming is the 650ti, which has 768 of them). Anti-aliasing works by rendering on a frame buffer with a resolution much larger than your screen resolution, and all those pixels need to be calculated before it gets finally scaled down to screen size.

So, if you have 1920x1080 screen resolution, and x4 oversampling, you're basically forcing the board to calculate a virtual resolution of (1920x4) x (1080x4) = 7680x4320. Turn off anti-aliasing, and you're now calculating only 1920x1080 pixels. In short, with x4 oversampling, you're making your video chip 17 times slower (16 times for the increased frame buffer size, plus the final downscaling cycle).

For me (but that's on Windows), the video options have a multi sample setting. Alternatively, the graphics driver itself may have options to force anti aliasing off. Windows drivers usually have that, but I don't know which options you're allowed to set on a Mac.

On my Windows system (with an NVidia GeForce 650ti), I have under 'Manage 3D Settings', an option called 'Anti Aliassing - Mode'. It can be set to Off, Application controlled, or a specific fixed setting. When it's in Application controlled mode, then each game can provide it's own setting. When it's set to a specific setting other than that, application settings are ignored.

I've been playing it a little through Crossover games and it runs much much better, but still a little slow, but definitely playable. A bit sad to see Mavericks hasn't improved performance though.
