Just chiming in as well that I have the same unplayable FPS performance on my Mountain Lion 2010 MacBook Pro C2D 2.4 with Nvidia 320m and 4g of RAM. CK2 runs flawlessly on it like many people say, but when I first ran it on this same computer it had the pretty commonly reported map border flickering which was later fixed. Having a copy of EU3 on my laptop basically got me through law school, so I was a bit bummed when EU4 wouldn't work properly, hope you guys can find a fix!
Maybe now i see the reason why they didn't release the demo for the MAC
The sad thing is that the Demo ran just fine on my bootcamped windows partition on the exact same machine. i have not, however, bothered to go install my full copy on my windows partition to see if it'll play better.
Is it unheard of that the developer studio could make a patch that will allow the game to work on the vast majority of macs out there that aren't brand-new, top of the line machines? Or are we pretty much effed here.
The biggest problem is Mac drivers. They support only Opengl 2.1, while your GPU supports higher Opengl version. Thats the reason it works under Bootcamp and not Mac. As I understand Apple will release a new version of their OS that supports Opengl 4. Maybe upgrading to that version will make the game work better. It's about time they upgrade their support. Opengl 2.1 is seven years old now.
Yeah, I was thinking of that. I'm confident that between the Mavericks drivers and some patch optimization it'll run just fine.
I'd really be disappointed if a game released in August won't work until an OS upgrade (to be released at an unspecified time after the game release) comes out. If its a problem with OSX 10.8x that can't be solved until 10.9, then the game really shouldn't be out at all for Mac. I really hope that there's something that P'dox can do to optimize the performance until 10.9 is released. Especially since they list the OS requirement as 10.6.8.
As I understand it, you have a Nvidia 320m gpu with 256mb. The requirement is ATI Radeon HD 6750 / NVIDIA GeForce 320 / NVIDIA GeForce 9600 or higher, 1024MB graphics memory. I think those who meets the requirements can run the game with 10.6.8.
- We were told previously that it would run on machines that ran CK2.
- The gamersgate system requirements did not originally list 1024MB required, just the specific cards. I wish I took a screenshot, because they now show that, so all I've got to go on is my memory of that.
- Given that people running 10.8x with machines that are only a year old are having problems running a strategy game, something's wrong.
And those requirements are very high for a strategy game, especially when the Windows version only requires 512 MB. It's obviously an issue with the Mac optimization, and I'd just like someone to admit it.
I do not think it is a Mac optimization problem per se. Linux requirements are the same. I would rather think that 1) the OpenGL version of the Clauswitz engine is for now not as optimized as the DirectX version, and 2) graphics drivers are not always optimized either. Such optimizations do not happen overnight, so we Mac/Linux users may have to wait for all of this to improve or to get a more powerful GPU to make up for these weaknesses. That being said, except for a small bug with shadows (driver bug apparently) EU IV works fine on my Linux laptop with an integrated intel HD 3000, which is clearly not withing specs.
Hey paradox bif EU3 fan.. I was planning on playing all sunday EU4.. but its unplayable on my mid-2010 MBP

I agree with Centre in post 53, and that ^^^ post is just completely unhelpful, as are the rest of the ridiculous 'should have read the requirements' posts. The bare facts are, a bunch of us who liked CKII on Macbooks older than 18months old (alot of people) bought EUIV. Its logical to think that a game released on Steam from the same company (who just months prior added new content onto CKII that worked fine for everyone) would run no problem, just as CKII did. I think it's a ridiculous ask to ask people with barely even 2 year old Macbooks to go and check and find out that their machine which cost £1000 can't run a game. Why even release it for Mac!? The % of mac users who use a macbook older than 2012? I'd like to see it. It's high. The worst thing is, a few of us have Macbook Pro's, a supposed higher end Macbook.
There WILL be no more 'read the requirements' posts, and more "OK, we're working on it, hang fire folks!" No more counter productive answer from devs.
I can play by going into the settings file and turning draw_terrain off... So I play with black landmasses with no colour. Yet when terrain is on, the worst lag you have ever seen.
Get it fixed.
At this point, I wish I hadn't bought it at all! Maybe it will work in a few months. I can dream.
While I'm certainly not happy, I do wish the rest of my fellow dissidents would acknowledge that it is not the developers providing less than helpful responses to our concerns. I understand that there's some serious (though less serious) issues with the PC version and they're pumping out hotfixes for those, that probably won't help us out too much. I'll understand if the PC customers get priority over us (though I won't be thrilled if they cool off after the initial hotfixes w/o anything to optimize for Mac).
Then again, who knows? They might be so damn busy with PC hot fix that by the time they're done, Sept 10 will come and go, and OSX 10.9 might solve our problems. And that'll shut me up since I'll be getting it, even though I don't think we should have to rely on an unreleased OS to solve the issue.
