Mac Launcher cannot select dlc or mods

I normally play on my pc at home as the game runs a lot smoother than on my mac laptop. However I am currently away from home and wanted to play some ck2. I've played the game successfully on my laptop before with DLC enabled but when I try to play it now all DLC is disabled. I've checked to make sure the DLC is in the DLC folder and I've uninstalled then reinstalled the game and verified the integrity of the game cash.

When i start the game i notice there is a new launcher but there is no option for me to enable or disable the DLC's on the launcher. I've tried to fix the problem myself but nothing so far has worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sorry if this topic has been covered elsewhere, I tried to check but found nothing that helped my problem.

It sounds like the game has not fully downloaded on the Mac, somehow. Check that the Steam client is up to date there (Steam-Check for client updates). Then go into CK2-properties-local files- verify game cache integrity. Steam must obviously be running an in Online mode, and check that Steam Cloud sync is enabled.

If that doesn't help try a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.

File Locations on Mac OS X
The executable is in /Users/USER/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/crusader kings ii/CrusaderKings2.app

On OS X 10.8.x Apple have hidden the /Users/USER/Library/ folder. To see it go to the Finder, hit command-shift-G (ie Go To) and type in ~/Library/ .

The user files (settings.txt, error logs, saved games, gfx) are in /Users/USER/Documents/Paradox Interactive/ .

Thanks for the reply, the internet here is slow so i shall update you when the full clean re-install is done. One thing, I have no CrusaderKings2.app just a ck2.app in the folder you mentioned. Also I have all beta participation switched off, is this a problem?

I have finished the clean reinstall and nothing has changed, the game opens and runs fine but there is no option to select DLC or mods in the launcher

Sorry, yes, it is now called ck2.app , that's fine.

I'm not sure what you mean by "I have all beta participation switched off, is this a problem"? Do you mean you have opted out of all CK2 betas in the Steam client? If so that's normal and fine. What about Steam client betas - you are not in one of those, are you?

You can in fact try rolling back to the "beta" of 2.0.4 in Steam-ck2-properties-beta tab - that has the old launcher, does that show any DLCs?

Do the DLC files actually exist in /Users/USER/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/crusader kings ii/dlc/ folder?

Yeah I have opted out of steam client betas and ck2 betas. In the DLC folder there are a lot of .zip files which i assume are the dlc. When using the old launcher from 2.0.4 the launcher shows all the DLC but when they are ticked and the game is launched none of them actually are loaded which is very odd. Also on the 2.0.4 version I am unable to start the game through steam as it says error, missing executable but I can launch it fine from the CrusaderKings2.app

So the DLC files are there (there should be one .zip and one .dlc file for each DLC). I'm frankly puzzled as to how they are not showing in your 2.1.6 Launcher, they show up fine on my iMac and for every other Mac user here.

When you did the reiinstall I suggested, did you manually delete everything under Documents/paradox/ck2 ? That would include the dlc_signature file which keeps track of what ones you have.

When you go into the game itself, do you get any of the small round reassurance icons for the major DLCs, centre=left of your screen? What about in the Contents button, do they show there?

I assume you've restarted your Mac since installing the game?

There is one .zip and one.dlc file for each DLC. I did delete the dlc_signature file when i did the reinstall, right now the file has I think one cd key in. When i go into the game there are none of the little circles showing a dlc is active and I'm unable to do things like select republics or jewish characters etc. My computer has been restarted yes. The contents button is greyed out.

In the 2.1.6 launcher there is no box to select mods or DLC, however when i reverted back to 2.0.4 the launcher showed DLC's and allowed me to check and un-check them, however when the game loaded up the DLC's had not been loaded, there were none of the small DLC icons and I was still unable to play as republics or jews etc.

OK, well I can only guess we have a Steam issue here as the game itself looks fine.

What if you exit Steam entirely, and manually run ck2.app ?

With steam completely shut down the problem persists when i run the game from the .app

And the steam flush config changed nothing

It's like Steam can't contact the Steam servers to check the DLC are valid. Your Steam client is in Online mode, yeah? Check that Steam Cloud sync is enabled in the client, and the ports Steam client needs are open on all your routers

You are not running a beta version of the Steam client, I hope?

I'm not running a beta version and it's online with sync enabled. One thing is I'm at a friends house and it's at the friends house that i first noticed the problem so it could possibly be something to do with his router. I will be home today so I can check if it works on my router, I am hesitant to try and mess with the ports of someone elses router though.

Details have to be discussed with AndrewT, as i basically don't even know how to pronounce Mac.


The missing DLC/Mods box in the launcher for 2.1.6 is mysterious.

Did you actually do this when you uninstalled:

Could be settings.txt is messed up or sorm other file. It's important to delete the whole folder, before reinstalling.

Ok so I've bought Charlemagne and I'm back to playing on my mac and the problem still persists, I've done everything suggested so far in this thread except what Aardvark linked me to as i could not get the terminal commands to work. I'm really stumped and I really want to be able to play the new DLC.

Please help

None of the DLCs work on Linux either, the DLC selection menu is empty although I own all DLCs including the new ones.

Please start your own thread. Here in Tech support that's usually a better way of dealing with individual problems.
The symptons might be alike, but the reasons different.

I always asume people start the game from within the Steam launcher the first time after patching, but maybe thats' wrong.

Open up the steam library and launch it from there. After the first time the launcher should show dlc as normal. It happens every time there is a major patch.

Also, be online.
Seems starting the game from within the launcher is different to only have it start with the overlay through the desktop icon. That's my impression.

Yeah I'm on 2.2, what do you mean by the right checksum?

I'm starting the game by clicking play in steam whilst online.

Also one thing that may or may not be related, whenever i quit ck2 steam still thinks i'm playing and I'm unable to start another game due. My name also appears in green in the bottom left as if I'm playing a game rather than the normal blue. So i have to restart steam to get around this. I'm not sure if that helps at all but I'm trying to give you every little piece of information

The checksum is right next to the version number in the main game menu.

Regardless, please try a clean reinstall of Steam itself
