I've been trying to play lately, but I've just run into non-stop crashes on 2.2.1.

They seemed random (it's a complex game) and I wasn't sure what to do to replicate them. Loading up the most recent auto-save and playing through again (taking the same actions) didn't duplicate the crash. But these were all instant crash to desktops.

In the past couple of days, I purchased a handful of the dynasty shield packs and unit packs, etc. that I was missing. At this point, I'm playing the game with virtually all of the DLC. I have every expansion and all of the packs with the exception of the song packs, the EUIV converter, and the customization pack. I don't have any of these.

Even after getting all of these, I was still having crashes. They didn't seem to match any of the things the 2.2.1.1 beta patch was supposed to fix, but I figured I might as well try the beta patch and see if things got better.

I downloaded the beta patch an hour or so ago. Things were running fairly smoothly until just now. I've finally got a consistent bug (yay? no... not yay).

How to duplicate this bug? Well, I'm not entirely sure, but I have a save game on April 1st, and consistently, on April 7th, the game completely locks up. I can still move the mouse. The mouse is the regular hand shape, not the waiting cursor. Nothing is clickable at all however, and time stops progressing. Even unit animations (there's some horsies walking to a neighboring county) completely stop. Moreover, my computer's fans kick on (which is actually pretty rare for them to be on at all). Seems like it's probably some sort of infinite loop.

With all that said, I don't know where to go looking about to find any information to help further diagnose the problem. I have the save game from just before the problem, but I'm not sure what would be a good way to distribute it to the developers. Beyond that, please let me know what I can do to help diagnose this problem.


My computer is a Mac Mini late 2012 model. I'm running OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite. I've never had any crashes before the past week or so (though I haven't honestly played much since Charlemagne DLC before this week).

So this is just in one particular save game, not in any new game you start? If so, under what patch was this game started?

What video card does that model have? If you're not sure, look in Steam-Info-System Info, paste in there the relevant part - especially the video memory (Vram).

It is only in this particular save game so far and this save game was started today after I patched to 2.2.1.1 (99% certain). I started a new game after posting this thread, and no problems so far, but I haven't made it to the same year yet (haven't played it as long). My Mac says the graphics card is: Intel HD 4000 1024 MB Graphics. (couldn't find where to look in Steam, the Mac menus are slightly different.)

I have same situation on Macbook Air Intel, HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB is card. My previous 2.1 froze at same date for one game and completely randomly on my others. Updated to Beta 2 days ago and today its back to freezing about 2 weeks after my ironman game, if i go slowest speed it gets a few extra days but when its on 4 or 5 speed its always stopping on same day. Very annoying, starting a new one now, hopefully gets better.

A game started with 2.2.1 ought to be fine, it was only if it was from before that.

I was reading from the Mac Steam: on the top line click on Help and then System Info. Scroll down until you see Primary VRAM.


And you may as well try a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- opt into the 2.2.1.1 beta in the Steam beta tab
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.

File Locations on Mac OS X
The executable is in /Users/USER/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/crusader kings ii/ck2.app

On OS X 10.8.x Apple have hidden the /Users/USER/Library/ folder. To see it go to the Finder, hit command-shift-G (ie Go To) and type in ~/Library/ .

The user files (settings.txt, error logs, saved games, gfx) are in /Users/USER/Documents/Paradox Interactive/ .

I'm not particularly concerned with keeping any of my saves, so I've deleted all of everything from both locations. I'm reinstalling now to patch 2.2.1.1. I will update if any other future crashes or freezes happen.

So after the complete uninstall and deleting of everything, and then reinstall, and verifying, started up a new game. Same problem occurs.

I think the year is 796, I'm not sure if this was the same year as the other save file or not. The date however, once again, was April 7th... an interesting coincidence.

This game is consistently freezing on May 17th for me. The save loads in on May 2nd, I believe. No events happen for me between May 2nd and May 17th.

I am in the middle of two wars in this save game, but I'm pretty sure I'm not consistently at war when these freezes happen.

For me that game crashes outright on that date, not hangs. I'll log a new bug report and attach that game.

In the meantime, assuming it fails on the PC too, all you can do it put it aside and try it under each new patch as they come out - I don't know when the fix will come.

I've had outright crashes before. In fact, now that I think of it, since I switched over to 2.2.1.1, I haven't had any out-right crashes. The game just hangs. On patch 2.2.1 on Mac, I'd get crash to desktop. On 2.2.1.1, I get a hang. If I press Cmd+Option+Esc (roughly equivalent to Ctrl+Alt+Del on Windows), the game crashes then (Cmd+Option+Esc should open "Force Quit" window that would allow me to force quit it--it shouldn't necessarily immediately exit what I press this key combo on)... so that might be something to look at as well.

I was on 2.2.1.1 on my iMac and it crashed every single time, maybe 6 times in a row. Might be our OS X version difference, perhaps.

So... I'm an iOS developer by profession. I decided to attach Xcode Instrument's TimeProfiler to CK2. Here's some useful information...

In this particular save file, once the freeze date hits, there are two things ticking up time...

On the main thread:

Somewhere in your CGameState class, DailyUpdate() method this is tick tick ticking away.

And on a background thread:

In your Character class, AutoBuildSettlements method.

Let me know if the screenshots are not clear enough. I can type out the whole active stack if necessary.
