Was playing the Byzantium and at first things were not going my way, my allies Hungary and Poland were being unreliable. I barely managed to get a white peace with the Ottomans for our second war. But then the big blue blob personal unioned Austria, I also quickly allied with Muscovy which is now Russia. The results were amazing, Russia and the Big Blue blob simply help me fight off any Ottoman aggression. I already have Greece, Wallachia, Albania, Serbia and Bosnia cored, got a bit of Anatolia and I am steadily driving the damn Turks back. Well that teaches me to avoid rage quiting, since you never know when things may turn around.

In my game I had similar success due to managing to claim the throne of Aragon and having allied Castille. Everytime I was at war with the Ottos, a few weeks later transports ferrying doomstacks would arrive to reinforce me.

A word of advice on corring: Use the vassal tactic cause those Admin points come out really hard :D

Got the Basileus achievement now, I humbly thank the big blue blob and vodka for my victory.
EDIT:Okay even better, claimed Russia's throne and now I am in a personal union with them, this is a seriously lucky game of Byzantium. CAnt wait to integrate them

They can do pretty good in AI as well! In my game when I'm playing as The Knights, Byzantine has regained Cyprus, Athens, and Crete all without my help. They could probably hold out against the Ottomans pretty well if they get a decent ally.

Athens starts as a vassal and was likely diplo annexed, Cyprus and Crete probably revolted to them. It's fairly common to see the island cores revolt to BYZ since they are orthodox and the AI is incapable of landing a large enough force to negate the -2 landing penalty most of the time.

I thought that too in my latest game as France which I played for 6-hours straight yesterday (and didn't go to bed until 4am because of). I have a soft spot for the Byzantine Empire, I always feel bad for them in EU games because I want to see them regain the Greek peninsula at the very least. So I was delighted to see that by 1492 they still held all their original 1444 starting territories AND had added Athens and all the Greek islands AND had managed to retain it all after a war with the Ottomans, no doubt because they had allies in Serbia, Wallachia and Bosnia.

However when I looked back a few months later they were at war with the Ottomans again and every single province they owned was under siege all at the same time =(
