What's the benefit of marrying younger exactly? Gaming journalists and gamers alike would be creeped out at the very least.

And it would be probably banned in various countries too (looking at Australia and some others). It has zero benefits. In this case historical accuracy would mean shooting your own foot.

In CK2 each gender had a unique age setting for being marriageable despite how the vanilla game had them both at the same age. I'll assume CK3 lets you do the same.

Surely it's better to shoot your own foot rather than wait for someone else to do it for you? Why not act pre-emptively and mitigate the risk? ;)

Or don't and actually have the chance that something like that doesn't happen. Without such a feature being shot or shooting yourself won't happen likely.

This would lead to serious moral arguments and a lot of public backlash, and it probably isn't worth it for one little point of historical accuracy when there are hundreds more that have already been seen to. Besides, isn't this moddable? Players who want that level of accuracy can simply tweak their own game without sparking general outrage. Best if that remains the way of it, I think.

(By the way, as others have said, betrothal is another matter and was all-ages in CK2.)

Personally I would set marriage at 14 for both men and women, like HIP does, it's a decent compromise between historicity and modern sensibilities.

For the same decade old reason, no achievements when playing with mods. There are scores of players who never tried an actual mod because of that.

Ah, I suppose that's a fair point. Still, in this instance, it's probably better for the game's general reception if those who want both historical accuracy and achievements to deal with the inaccuracy on their achievement runs.

Please, admit that you only read the title of the thread.
I guessed correctly that somebody was going to make that factually incorrect argument, hence in the OP, I included an example of Matilda who was betrothed at age of eight, but was noted to be old enough to marry at age of twelve. Furthermore, the age of betrothal was agreed to be seven, different from the age of marriage. You are can argue against the proposal for many reasons, but historical accuracy isn't one of them.
i wasn't arguing about historical accuracy and i did read your post and gave it some thought before opening my fingers. we already have a betrothal/marriage system that works. lowering the ages would have to be a decision of PDX legal

and what nearly everybody else in the thread has said.

I don't understand why. I have always found the idea of applying real-life logic to abstractions non-sensical; characters in video games are not real, they are combinations of pixels and variables that might very loosely resemble something that exists in real life, but all their components are abstractions, meaningless and not comparable to anything that exist in our reality, that includes the number that is supposed to be their age. If we were to treat these artifacts as real people, why is murder allowed in-game, I thought it was illegal in our reality? This is even less of an issue within this game because there will not be any sexual content.
there are numerous laws around the world about depictions of simulated children i.e. even CGI images. murder, not so much...

I did not know that followers of the Norse Gods in Norway, Buddhists in Tibet, Hindus and Jains in India, Copts in Egypt and Muslims in Andalusi all followed Canon Law.
Muslims DID have early marriages. And thare is at least one example from nordic saga of older men marrying 12 years old girl (admittedly, to spite his ex-wife that he divorced literally minute before, but nobody objected, so...)

I'm perfectly content without the ability to marry 12 year olds. That's a feature I don't really need.

If OP really wants to marry a 12 years old, I think there are some Japanese games that can scratch that itch for them.

This will probably be moddable for those that want that historical accuracy, but I think it's wise to keep the unmodded age at 16. Like people say, it's just too controversial.

And I want to know. What benefit has it exactly, aside of "historical accuracy" (and even there you would have to research the specific regions, religions, cultures etc.) You would also have to skew the fertility down for the kids at the start. What the hell, even that sounds creepy as hell. And groups and media no matter if right-wing or left-wing will jump on that and tear that apart.

What brings it to set the marriage to a lower age for Paradox and the players except pleasing some historical-accuracy-fetishists or pedophiles. I am waiting for an answer. And please do not come with immersion, if you want that, get or make a mod.

Age of marriage is already skewed from modern sensibilities.

In some places it's 18 - or even 21.

In other cases (including some US states) the limit is 14 - or indeed in some states doesn't exist at all on a purely legal basis.

btw i had to use google translate. this forum is supposed to be english only, but anyway...it's not absurd that there are laws that govern the depiction of simulated children.

¿Cuál es el beneficio de casarse más joven exactamente? Los periodistas de videojuegos y los jugadores se asustarían por lo menos.

la tortura y el asesinato no dan miedo? que nivel de tonterías
Torture and murder are indeed terrible. However, lowering the age of adulthood would bring practically no benefit to the player, whilst sparking needless controversy for the company - "Controversy fuels deception and discord" (off-topic: this qoute made me feel like a true statesman and I'm super proud of it :D).
