If I understand correctly this is a random event that happens sometimes after a duel. Is it necessary that the duelists are either man-woman or same gender and homosexual? I have been having lots of duels with a female character trying to get the achievement with no luck so far.

It does check sexuality and sex attraction, yes. You also can't be rivals, and they have to either have opinion 45+ of you or have the "Budding Romance" opinion modifier.

Things that make this more likely are:

1. Your opponent is Lustful.
2. Your opponent has no lover.
3. You are Attractive or Groomed.

Attractive is congenital, as I'm sure you're aware. Groomed can be gained during upbringing (unfortunately I don't know the mechanics). During adulthood I only know of two ways: one is harassing them with the option available to bearers of the family bloodline, the other is a rare event that can only trigger when you are on either the Family or Seduction focus.

Love is a Battlefield is a pretty hard achievement to get, I find. I got it randomly while playing as usual. Basically whenever you get an option to do something with someone after a duel, take the friendly approach.

Since this event does not appear to be possible when you are rivals, it can be hard to find appropriate dueling partners. My recommendation for that would probably be to play as a Zealous Catholic and duel Excommunicated Catholics. You can even send them a gift beforehand to increase their opinion of you. :) The same tactic should work if you are a Zealous Muslim, except then you'll be targeting Decadent rather than Excommunicated Muslims. If they combine this with Lustful it should help you out a fair bit.

Just remember to check that they have no lovers before you pick a target. This was usually not a problem before 3.2, but with the new adding of random lovers that has changed a bit. If you try it out and find that all or most of your potential targets have lovers, it might be worth going back to 3.1.1 and playing that with AI Seduction focus turned off.

PS. The requirements and bonuses I posted above are correct as I got them from the game files themselves, but I don't know if they are the whole story. The chain of events that lead to the achievement is not one that you can easily get a complete grasp over just by skimming. If you want to do more research on it I'd recommend searching the game files for "achievement_love_is_a_battlefield" (the flag that is added to you when you get the achievement) and work backward from there. :)

Wow! Thank you! I had gone through the event files, but as you say, this event chain is not the easiest to understand. To get lots of duel opportunities I was playing as a female tribal in a warrior lodge (also going for the bless my reign achievement) and I kept expanding all the time to get battlefield duels too, but I didn't get lucky. The information you managed to get from the files should make things easier. I'll be bribing prospecting duelists and I'll try to get those traits on my character. Thank you so much!!

This is the final achievement I need. After reading Karlington's guide above I've been trying to get it for hours both as a zealous vs. excommunicated christian and as a member in the warrior lodge but without luck. Either I'm extremely unlucky or doing something wrong...

Does anyone have any more hints? Or maybe a suggestion of a starting character with a good chance?

This is one the these achievements that looks like its impossible to get. I'll be trying to get this one using this :D

I've got this event several times playing as the 769 High Chief of Kanem. He starts as a Strong 17 year old, so he should live for a long while. Set the game rules for Gender Equality = "All" and Generate Families = "On", which should create plenty of adult women nearby. Join the African warrior lodge before unpausing. You should get plenty of chances to duel women, and choose to pursue a romance when they approach you after the duel.

Have fun!

Default Norse Warrior Lodge has plenty of both genders in it, and throws up the duel mission regularly.

You should be able to check the list of members with whom you have mutual attraction, and groom them to like you with gifts or flirtation (i.e. use Seduction focus, but don't make them lovers). Seduction focus and its bonuses will help the appropriate gender have a better opinion of you, too. Or get carousing and make some quick friends.

The achievement HAS to be from the duel trigger, so avoid pursuing romance through other events that will result in them becoming your lover (i.e. the Random Courtier Tumble). The choice button mouseover will mention if it is going to add the "budding romance" modifier.

The event has a basic 10% trigger chance after a duel. The only thing that seems to make it fire more often is if the character has the cutely named "prev_is_lonely_this_romance_makes_sense_trigger", which guarantees the event is called (but not that it will succeed).

Can't be a rival or already a lover, must have either a 45+ attraction to each other or opinion_budding_romance (either will do, but each must have one of them), and each be attracted to the other's gender. Friendship does not get in the way, and would meet the 45+ mutual opinion in most cases. Close family is checked, and only allowed for Zoro, Mess, Divine Blood Pagan and Zun (!)

Generally, the event will upgrade a crush to a chance of adding a lover, or add a crush modifier (i.e. opinion_budding_romance). Other HF events do give chances of adding the various crush modifiers, and these do appear to include the ones you can get from childhood events. So if you carry a torch for a guardian or from the Present Heir events, and THEN find yourself in a friendly warrior lodge duel with them, it may progress right away. That is, if I'm reading the code right. The NPC DOES have a chance to reject, but this is not likely unless they hate you or you have a negative congenital trait.

Thanks a lot for your help, I finally got it! I didn't know my opinion of them was required to be +45 as well.

Now I'm back at 100% again. :)

I got this awhile back and had no idea why. I didn't look at the requirements so I thought one had to literally duel during battle before this would fire.

Warrior lodge is definitely the easy way to get this; just play a pagan run through and always join the warrior lodge and otherwise play as normal and duel whenever you get a mission and you'll get it sooner or later.

One thing you could do if hunting it is to decline any non-duel mission to speed up the chance of a good match, although you may as well do any mission that can be finished quick (like induct a kid). War can often delay being able to complete a mission (can't duel, can't induct, can't create new raiders), but you can cancel it at any time and get the 1000 day cooldown timer ticking over. That's about 3 years, so you probably don't want non-duel missions to fire at all if you can arrange it.

You can avoid the change "weak" focuses mission by always having War, Hunting, Rulership or Carousing selected.

If you are REALLY hunting for this achievement, you can also avoid the raid and war missions by arranging to have no valid targets. Valid war targets have to be between 50% and 130% of your nominal strength. Distance has an effect; It might be worth starting in 769 as Iceland or another isolated island with no boats (Canaries could be a good choice as well).

You can avoid the recruit child one easily by not having kids, which leaves only duel missions. The chances of a "kill target" mission is very low, so most of your missions should be normal duels.

Oh, and always keep an eye out for "enemy" duel targets that aren't rivals. They might be plotters that you otherwise quite like, or whom have done you wrong, but with whom opinion modifiers still get you +45. The event only screens out current lovers, not current spouses, consorts or former lovers, so you *might* be able to get it dueling an adulterous ex.

Homosexual males might have a slightly better chance of finding valid targets, depending of circumstances, especially if using the excommunication trick.

The 45 opinion having to be mutual is likely the biggest hindrance to getting the achievement. It's fairly easy to make your opponent like you with a bit of gold, but I'm not aware of any quick method of increasing your own character's opinion of others (keyword being "quick").

Becoming their friend gives a mutual +100 modifier, so use Sway and appropriate focuses to try to get that result. Can also happen through random Warrior Lodge events.

Oh, and another thing I spotted is that you can immediately invite your eligible kids at age 12 to join the lodge if you're Nomad, so that's another way to avoid a mission type you don't want, if Nomad.

Sure, but that's not a quick decision you can make to instantly improve your opinion of someone you're randomly dueling. Which is why this achievement is hard to get unless you're specifically hunting for it.

Yes, but you can at least prep for the chance coming up. You have 1000 days between missions, so there is a reasonable amount of time to make friends with as many potential love duellists as you can. Carousing is one of the non-weak Focuses, too.

If nomad or tribal you can invite your children for 50 prestige when they turn 12.
