So, in my nearly finished Viking game things got mad. The King of Aquitaine just became independent and I don't know why. Before you ask

- vassal limit is fine
- no elective gavelkind cr*p

In fact, neither my ruler nor the now independent King had a succession in the past few years. Because I was busy fighting off a Jihad I did not notice it immediately, but I have an idea what happend:

The King of Aquitaine was attacking the Queen of Mauretania (another vassal of mine) to claim her Kingdom. When he won the war, all of Aquitaine and Mauretania was gone from my realm.

So, what now? I don't have claims to subjugate my ex-vassal, so I guess I'm screwed - and of course I noticed this issue AFTER the game was saved (ironman). I'm thinking of restarting with an older backup (and I will backup yearly from now on) but what if this problem happens again? So if anybody has an idea why this happend, and how to avoid it, great... I had many inter-vassal wars with crowns going left and right, as long as they stayed my vassal I did not care (not that I could do anything to prevent it - med. crown authority is fine, but when they are not part of the de jure Empire it does nothing).

Sounds like inheritance. I haven't heard of anything else that can rip massive territory out without you as a participant (civil war, invasion.) Or some form of pop up notification for that matter.

Check his kingdom titles. He must have been married to a foreign queen/empress and she happened to die first.

Re: Inheritance: Negative. He is King of Aquitaine and Mauretania, both Kingdoms were my vassals. Besides, there are no possible Queens to marry, all Kings of the world are either in my realm or infidels.

And I did not by accident grant him independence, because he has no opinion modifier for that. So I guess thats just extremely tough luck with a bug?

The only thing I can think of is if he somehow got an empire tier title, but you'd have probably noticed that if that's the cause :p

Do you know if he became independent upon winning his mauritanian war? (No idea how that would lead to indepence, but might be usefull to know) Or some other thing that happened at the same time of him going independent?

Was he in an indepence faction before going independent?(you might have accidentally accepted his demands, though it is not a very likely thing to happen :D)

Nah, there is no (Norse) Emperor beside me. I doubt he was in the independence faction, I tend to keep my strongest vassals at 100 opinion. And I think winning the war was what led to his independence as he won ~2-3 months before I saw the mess.
