I have a brother whose opinion of me is -88. He wants one of my duchys, my titles, etc. Is it worth it to try and placate him in some way, or since he hates me so bad, is it a better idea to just do away with him? Is there an opinion number point where you just say "screw it. theyll never like me." Like -50 and below, or something?

Of course I'm running in to this problem after my initial character ran his kingdom like a well oiled machine... everyone loving him. Now his son (me) is roundly unliked. How to avoid these generational traps?

Check the traits. Certain traits give negative opinion.

Check his grievances (reasons for negative opinion). If your brother is unlanded, send him a gift and forget about him. If he's landed, try to transfer him to another vassal and let the vassal deal with him.

A personal favourite of mine is making them bishops and burying them under another count (and maybe Duke as well) never to be heard from again...

After a holy war, give him a county with all lower titles for +100 to relations. Land covers a multitude of sins.

Yes this is a good way to deal with any vassal or courtier who's annoying, just bury them under a cushion of vassalage. It's tantamount to sending them to the monastery and the closest we'll ever really get to that.

If you like him and he is unlanded if you have too many Duchy or such you can turn that -88 to +100 generally by making him a Duke. The problem I have with this in most of my games is that brother generally remain loyal but soon as he dies off I have to deal with some nephew or cousin Duke who wants a kingdom or the crown itself and making factions or just plain rising up against me. Easier to bury him in a bishopric but not as much fun and I actually like some of these wayward family members.

You must own the county, then when you've made your target a bishop, you grant the county to someone else. (Optionally granting the duchy to someone, as well.)

Yeah that is far better over the long haul. I rarely use plots to kill them off seems like anytime I try that I end up with half the family angry about being a killer of kin....

On the other hand, if your heir is crap and one of the brothers is ambitious (and ambitious, by itself, gives nice stat bonuses, which usually means they are more skilled), then by all means try to get rid of your heir ASAP. Classical example: the sons of William the Conqueror.

Either that or "I want to wake up with an extremely venomous snake in my bed or stay in inns smelling unusually strongly of manure"
