losing my kingdoms!

Hi folks,
Got a confusing succession problem. I'm playing as the bizantine empire and my first character recently died. His son has now taken over as emporer but i now have a succession crisis. The empire will be inherited by his oldest living son (second son as the eldest died) but most of the kingdoms will go to my grandson from my first son who is dead. I hope you got that :wacko:
I have checked the succession laws and all are set to Agnatic - Cognatic Primogeniture. I am totally confused!

Did any of these deaths just happen? I've heard that it sometimes takes a minute for the game to correct itself. Outside of that, if all your succession laws are the same, I have no idea.

I've not really played the Byzantines much since Legacy of Rome, but from my understanding, under primogeniture, it's correct that the kingdoms should go to your grandson, but the inheritance for the empire works slightly differently as you have other factors including the born in the purple trait and honorary titles that affect succession. If your second son is born in the purple then this is probably why he's inheriting the empire over your grandson.

Thanks to both of you. perpetualmuse, everything you said makes sense except my second son wasn't born in the purple. Its a bit annoying because this will probably mean a succession war with my grandson.

Well, I'm not sure then because Byzantine succession is one of the few things I haven't made an effort to learn about since LoR. I really should play a game as the Byzantines! Someone else will no doubt reply with a more helpful answer

I have reported this as a bug. The same splitting of empire and kingdoms happens when you get a new child born in the purple. This can not be working as designed. Imagine you are a god-emperor and all your kingdoms go to your first-born - rebellion success chance = 100%
As a workaround send the heir of the kingdoms to the church or do some save scamming when you are old and grant your heir those kingdoms before you pass away.
I did the later and it cost me around 500 gold because I went to war raising all ships from my vassals lol

Actually sounds like it might be correct. Under most succession laws, the grandsons of your eldest son come before your second son in succession. They probably got priority for the kingdoms, while your eldest living son was probably "born in the purple" and thus placed in front of them for succession to the Imperial Throne.

While this case might be WAD I have seen this with no sons BIP.

The OP already stated that the eldest living son is not born in the purple.

Well, my bad. I dunno, maybe adults outweigh kids when it comes to the Imperial Throne? Or maybe he marked his second son as his despot?

Name your grandson the despot, that will count as him being born in the purple and should let him take control of the Empire.
