I do think that if you lose a 'mech in combat and then retreat from the mission or complete it and extract without killing all of the opfor, you should lose that 'mech entirely.

Ill be self scrapping any of the mechs i lose to cT coring :)
There's a line of code in the JSON files that allows the game to RNG a destroyed CT, from 0-100%, when the CT is destroyed. It makes me wonder if my favorite mech will be destroyed when it is CTd instead of instagibbig it when I get back to the Mech lab.

devs said previously that there is a json variable to set chance of losing the mech if CT was cored - game ships with it set to zero, but it's a float so you can set it to 1 if you want it to happen all the time, or anything between 0 and 1.
The variable is DestroyedMechRecoveryChance=1. It is set to 1 when the game ships, and as I understand it that means 100% chance of recovery. You would set it to 0 if you want there to be a zero percent chance of recovering your mech when the torso is destroyed, and .3 if you wanted a 30% chance of recovering the mech when the torso is destroyed.

I would hate it if I lost both the 'Mech and the MechWarrior on a CT core (and last I checked, there's a good 50-75% chance a MechWarrior dies outright on a CT core). Losing all that XP and all those CB would likely make me reload a save. Getting to keep the 'Mech, even if I have to spend two months rebuilding it, makes the loss of the MechWarrior easier to bear and lessens the need to reach for that "load save" button.

But to each their own; the variable is there in the JSON files for everyone to set as they please :)

I do not want to collect light mechs but I would like to see them in every shop because it fits with lore. I want heavier mechs, but if they are somewhat scarce then it will make it more exciting to find one. It will also encourage me to try out more heavier mechs other than my favorites. Like a rare collectible trading card there will be some enhanced sense of value for those that I find and use.

If this goes hand in hand with the possibility of mech loss then using heavier mechs involves some risk because of the hassle of replacing them. You may decide to keep some in reserve until you need them and use one or two mediums instead. This could help make the lights and mediums more important because of their greater disposability which encourages using them more often, especially for milk runs. In my opinion this would help both with enhancing lore accuracy in the game as well as with game balance.

The OP suggestion sounds more like something that should go into a difficulty selection. Making the game too punishing for a regular/normal difficulty may be too much for a wider audience.

I agree with the devs that there should probably be a single difficulty by default. But I like the idea of unlocking at least one increased difficulty mode for subsequent play throughs by successfully completing the main story plus meeting some other metrics such as accumulating a certain amount of money and winning a certain number of battles. This mode might not even be visible as an option at all until you meet the requirements. A hidden hardcore mode.

Actually it doesn't in the area of space we start in. They might be more common when we get into the great houses space, but we're in the periphery and mechs should be scarce out here. On the other hand I wish they would allow us to drop with damaged mechs, as this would more closely follow many novels.

Are the Long War guys still doing mods for games or did they just start making their own?

I want a Long War mod for this game already and I haven't played it yet. Based on what I am seeing it's too easy to get new mechs and not punishing enough lol

We'll see.

You are free to alter the json files associated with mech salvage, prices and even global modifier for missions. If you want, start out with 5 skull missions after the tutorial part :D

Cheers :)

I obviously lack self control, so that ain't gonna happen unless it's on overhaul mod that leaves me little choice. Also, I am cripplingly lazy so I won't edit anything really.

Heh, well not too lazy to download mods. There will be a Nexus site for this game no doubt. That's the first thing I do on any game after a week or two, go look for difficulty mods, but then refuse to play Dark Souls. I am complicated.

OK, so, first, I'm not that far in, I guess none of my mechs have been damaged enough so far, maybe I need to look closer at the UI, but I'm not sure what the icon or keystroke for an ejection is.

Also, I took salvage of a cored mech early on and it's in my storage bay, with no way I can figure out to sell, transfer to mech bay, etc. I keep seeing people talking about 3 salvaged mechs. If one has 3 cored mechs in storage like this, is that what's necessary to be able to do anything with it??

3 of the exact same model to build one.

Edit: the mechanic will automatically build them when you have 3 pieces, you don't have too, in fact you cant as far as I can tell, he puts them together before you enter the MechBay.
