I used Vigilance with Dekker (who I also had learn the Bulwark skill) and had him jump behind enemy lines to take out an SRM carrier. An enemy mech ran up and punched him. Okay, no biggie.

However, when he got shot by a PPC carrier, I noticed that he had lost his Guarded + Bulwark buffs. I was kinda counting on those. So was he. Instead, he's now the first entry on my Memorial Wall.

Is losing Guarded from a melee attack a new thing with this latest patch? I don't remember that happening before. I remember melee attacks ignoring Guarded, but not having them debuff the unit.

I can't exactly remember when it was added, but its been a thing for a while now. I'm certain melee removed guarded/bulwark state since Flashpoint came out.

Perhaps it was part of the skill rebalance update that happened a few months prior to Flashpoint? It may even have been a thing before then, but my memory of those dark times is hazy (I much prefer the way the skills work now).

This has been in the game since I believe the Beta, but certainly since launch, and isn't related to instability. It's just one of the perks of getting into melee range.
