Alright. we all know that the Meji restoration is what makes japan fun but i keep hitting my head against a wall.

How do I get this event to fire.

"Satsuma (moderate) succeeds him leads to a Multi-Party Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy with Right to Ban and -7 militancy in 1860. This is arguably the best possible outcome - it's the fastest, it lowers militancy dramatically and you become a Constitutional Monarchy with a Parliamentary Executive (so you can set the ruling party without raising militancy!). However, you won't be able to become a Democracy. "

I want to be able to switch parties without raising miltancy. So tell me oh wise people of the Victoria forums ; how do i get this event to fire.

I'm also cool with fireing the event manually or someone making a event that gives me parilamentary executive.

Thanks for the help guys.

The chain is quite weird in all honesty...

Firstly, ALWAYS refuse the Dutch letter unless you don't want the restoration. For Perry's mission, choose option A (break the isolation) to gain the research points, etc... (it doesn't really matter what you choose though).

Providing that the "Ie Naosuke (hardline) leads the Shogunate" event doesn't fire in late January 1856, choose option A ('Start constitutional reform') in the "Tokugawa Nariakira (moderate) leads the Shogunate" event. Following this, in the "Tokugawa Nariakira is Assassinated" event choose option A (Satsuma (moderate) succeeds). You should get the Meiji Restoration in 1860.

If the "Ie Naosuke (hardline) leads the Shogunate" event does fire then you'll have to make different choices. If this does fire, choose option A ('Crush all opposition'). Following this, choose option B in the "Ie Naosuke is assassinated" event (you'll lose less prestige this way). Later, in about 1860 also, you'll get the Meiji restoration.

I could've really typed this up better and clearer... but hey... I'm on my way out haha! Hope this helps! Japanese history isn't my speciality so I'm not too sure what is the historical route, I've just been looking at the events sequence.

It's not that hard at all really.

Start the 1836 campaign and select Japan, and save the game.

Open the save using notepad. The save is huge in notepad, but all the raw info can be changed in it.

Find Japan in there among the nations, and when you do, look down the list of parameters for it. You will see a simple line:
Civilized? yes/no
Japan is set to no, so just change it to 'yes' and save the change, close it and restart the game.

Presto, you are now civilized and can reseach without penalty. You can even change your level of literacy to a competive number like 70-80% and compete for the top spot without help from Europe or that dullard of an emperor. ;)

cool. good thing i made a back up when i modified this file. a lot of things that can screw up if i change to much.

Don't worry about messing up the game itself. Editing the save file only affects that specific save and nothing else, so if you started another game as Japan you would have to remod the file(s) in the new save to get the same effects.
