Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein is probably one of the most beloved trilogies of the whole genre of fantasy, and quite rightly so for in it (and the other books ) Tolkein creates a fantasy mythos so large and inter-linking that in many rival the mythologies of many ancient people groups. Yet, despite it's popularity, a quick search will show you that there are no mods to play in Middle Earth for Crusader Kings II. Now many people have suggested the idea before, but it has largely been dismissed as being impossible. That Middle Earth is too removed from the Middle Ages to make a mod playable or fun.

I would like to challange that idea, and hopefully try and get a team together to see if we could do the impossible and re-create Middle Earth. I believe that matters such the immortality problem can be overcome, even if not with a direct solution. I even believe that we could eventually have the War of the Ring take place at the end-game, through the careful use of scripted events etc.

Tolkein, through his works gave us a huge amount of information to work with, we can say who was in charge of the Longbeards during the Rise of the Witch-King etc. We know the feudal system is at work in Middle Earth, whether it is the Tooks in the South Farthing to the Princes of Gondor, whether it is the King of Dale or the Beornings east of the Misty Mountains... Even in the large depopulated areas of south Eridor we are told that in the woods man lives on, with the Dunlanders etc all having chieftans who can be put into the set up of Crusader Kings...

Personally, I think he easiest way to set it out would be while the three successor states of Arnor are still around... they could be tituler de facto kingdoms, while Gondor and Arnor would be de jure with the United Kingdom being the de jure Empire...

There are a lot of things that would need to be made, and it would take a team of dedicated LotR fans with a good knowledge (or at least some with a good knowledge) to allow this idea to move into a reality. Their are so many different mechanics in the game that with a little bit of modding here and their we could have a fantastic LotR experience on our hands.

Now, I should warn you, I am new to the world of modding so if there is any hope of this getting off the ground it would be through a team of people wanting to allow Middle Earth to come to life in a new exciting way.

Both LotR and Crusader Kings II are about the stories of individual characters that change the world, which is why I believe this game could end up with one of the best LotR experiences that can be found, outside of actually reading the books...

So anyone interested in this idea at all?

I signed that petition. Only nearly 6000 signatures? C'mon need more!

I was thinking about doing a lotr mod, the history files seem easiest, but I don't even know how to start making a map, I don't think I could do it very well just using MS paint, and then how do I line up the rivers and stuff >>

I can very easily do all the history files needed though, I know pretty much everything and know where to look to get the required info.

But regarding the elves, that will be the whole point... they don't age and die, however they do eventually sail off to the Undying Lands... If you cannot mod a character immortality you work around it so it still makes sense from a LotR point of view...

And I agree, we need to just work with the books... Total War: The Third Age is still up and running so I would say we are safe with that... what you need to do is that if we do ever get to the War of the Ring era (a bold step of faith as at the moment we don't even have a team yet) we would have to make sure that none of the characters look too much like the ones in the movies... that and we will have to either use the Crusader Kings music or somehow provide our own...

But these are early days yet...

Arko isn't saying that out of spite, the moderators don't like links to things that can make Paradox look like they're taking sides on other matters and sometimes they crack down over even the most minor of links.

Well let them. If he wants to have that job, he should become a moderator.

I think a mod could be made as long as it didn't have anything from the movies. If third age can do it why can't we? The MERP thing said specifically that they would take parts from the books AND the movies, that's what probably brought a C&D. The movies are trash, so a ck2 mod isn't losing anything when we don't have green ghost armies saving minas tirith or elves helping defend helmsdeep.

Exactly, there is so much in the actual books that it will not be lack of information will be the problem... If we carefully script the game as well, you could see the rise of the dragons in the north, and the demise of the Numeonor (spelt that wrong I know) blood-line due to inter-marriage... yes, you will not have lots of succession crises with the elves, but that is the world of LotR... it is the world of men, dwarves, goblin and orc that fight amongst themselves not the elves...

Does anyone know if there have been an major attempts at a mod like this before, as perhaps we can see if anyone who was involved with them might want to try their hand at it again...
