Been playing my game in beta branch across a few updates, 600-star galaxy, 0.5x hyperlanes, 0.5x planets, 1x WH, 1.5x gateways. Now I'm around ~2400 and the game speed is bearable. Not stellar, not not a slideshow either. On fastest it's about a second per day, with some visual stuttering, e.g. when ships travel between systems, their icons move in a series of short hops rather than in one smooth move. A bit annoying but I still have hopes to play it till the crisis strikes.

What happened to their theory worm hole FTL and planet tiles was the performance issue.It is no better at all.

I think the engine has a fundamental issue they don't know how to solve.Yeah it will improve but I don't ever expect a smooth game in late game.

Nah, CK2 uses the same engines, performance went worse and worse until the Horse Lords patch then the trend reversed and it got better every patch, performance is basically the same as it was before Rajas of India add the entirety of India to the map despite Holy Fury adding another load of counties, the map is basically twice the size it was when the game was first released. Paradox just hasn't invested enough time in nitty gritty optimization like they have for other games.

Indeed.

I do find it frustrating though that a game like CK2, with hundreds and hundreds of provinces and literally thousands of separate characters doing their thing runs an absolute peach, but Stellaris dies on it's arse before you even get to the late game. It has got noticeably worse in 2.2.
