rewards are some awesome tech(shields and reactors better as tier 5, and 2 auxillary modules, 1 increasing evasion, the other increasing accuracy).
after destroying the fortress, the eventchain starts, and you'll have to make the right choices in the dialog. unfortunatly, you either have to guess or look up online what the right answers are, since you can't get the info from curatorsa(because of the bug where the window instantly closes when you buy the information).

as far as I remember the right choices are going for a low powersurge to open the door, rearranging the rings, and then fooling the fortress by supplying your own dark matter(there may be some alternative routes that are right too, but this is what I did and got the rewards)

Okay spoilers incomming to this lovely puzzlebox : The first option military or scienceship, take science and scan it, then take the lower estimate, once they are inside you come to some mertal tori, take the re-arange option for the 2 tori, after that you can prompted with some options to scan a black hole, homesystem and 1-2 others, scan the system star and pick the middle option, however you need a level 5 scientist for this approach, i do not know if some of the others allows similar resulsts.

If you really want to, one could always save before starting the event chain and explore the different options/results.

For the first option science or millitary, both will move you forward. Science is a simple project, the millitary requires a troop transport BUT DONT SEND AN ENTIRE ARMY, the one time I tried that option they blew themself up in the process, costing me some 20 gene warriors (Don't ask how this is possible...).

Haven't personally experimented with the second part, always re-aranged the toris.

For the third, I think they all Work, have scanned a Black hole twice and the home system once all lead to the same result.

(because of the bug where the window instantly closes when you buy the information).
It's available in l10n files:
guardian.515.name:0 "Enigmatic Fortress"
guardian.515.desc:0 "It is the kind of absurd, massive and self-perpetuating construction that you don't see built anymore. Maybe that is for the best."
guardian.515.a:0 "Any structure can be destroyed."
guardian.515.a.reply:0 "The Fortress has been defeated before, but it always recovers. Some of the ancient empires of this galaxy have been driven nearly or entirely mad failing to unlock its deeper secrets or even permanently destroy it. It appears so focused on maintaining itself that it's doubtful if it has any other serious purpose."
guardian.515.b:0 "Can the fortress be entered?"
guardian.515.b.reply:0 "It can and it has, although that attempt is now nearly forgotten. The fortress can be partially powered while in shutdown, although it will attempt to use whatever power is sent into it to jump-start its full systems. Proceed with caution."
guardian.515.c:0 "Who built the fortress?"
guardian.515.c.reply:0 "Whoever they were, they must have been fond of puzzles and enigmas. The only items recovered from the fortress in the past are metal shapes used in contraptions inside, to be rearranged to some satisfactory solutions. Those who brought them back did so because they failed and barely escaped with their lives. Many others didn't."
guardian.515.d:0 "How is the fortress powered?"
guardian.515.d.reply:0 "The power system must have been built at some point between the initial construction of the hull and the setup of the defense systems. Its recovery method is unknown, but we have discovered that the fortress contains large quantities of dark matter. That substance and its relationship to black holes is key to understanding how the fortress has lasted so long.\n\nNo one has ever found the source of its power, but it is likely to be extremely volatile."
guardian.515.bb:0 "Remind us about entering it."
guardian.515.cc:0 "Remind us about who built it."
guardian.515.dd:0 "Remind us about how it is powered."

Found this with Google. It bugged out for me I think.

I destroyed the Vault, and made the wrong choice (high power surge). It woke up, I defeated it again. Then I got the popup and I told them to explore, and then it just stopped. In the Event thing I see the main event (which says we're waiting for explorers), but not the sub-events where the choices are. I've waited for a few months and restarted the game, but I can't seem to make it activate again.

Any ideas? BTW, playing Ironman, so no old saves either.

It is a known bug. Since your save is ironman, nothing can rescue the save now.
