Originally, I was going to post this in OT, and the title was "Looking for good documentaries on the English Civil War"

I realized that not only would I be more likely to find more quality (if lesser quantity) answers here, but that leaving the title half blank will allow it's use by others.

Thus, my request is for a good doc on the English Civil War.

Any answers are appreciated, and feel free to ask for something on your own too!

in particular I'm curious about the running of the country under a republic.

For example, they couldn't well call it the "Royal" Army/Navy/Whatever as they was no Roy/King!

So how did all this work, etc.

There hasn't ever been a Royal Army in Britain since the Civil war ended, I think there were more important problems and issues with "how the army worked" under the Commonwealth than its name.

There are no good documentaries on the English Civil War.

In fact, the only thing which even remotely springs to mind was a truly appalling series by Tristram Hunt, who was such a failure at being a television historian that he had to become Labour Shadow Education Minister.

The trouble with books is that there are rarely any pictures, and they never move.

Oooooo, you see. There is this fabulous device called "imagination". With "imagination" you read and you can build an image in your own head that is not the direct manipulation of images and film. Just a suggestion. I know the candy of film tastes good, but a well nourished mind needs a balanced diet of books to stay healthy and to grow.

There is a book on Amazon called "A Military History of the English Civil War" by Malcolm Wanklyn (har har), which delves into the land-based strategy of the English Civil War. There are a couple of diagrams :p, but there is a lack of maps and the fractured nature of the Civil War makes the narrative quite hard to follow sometimes.

However it is hilarious imagining Prince Rupert's cavalry careening into Parliamentary lines... then keep on galloping away from the battlefield.

Sounds interesting, is there a film or TV show about it ?

Imagination is fiction. I'm asking about documentaries.

I've gotten my fill of English Civil War docs; but I've noticed how similar certain things in the English Civil War are to other "revolutions"

I'm curious if there is anything that ties these events, or compares them, to both the American Revolution and/or the French Revolution.
