I'm quite new to C:S.
I like playing in an optimising way.
For many hours I scanned the net for informations like:
  • Do low taxes attract new people/industries? If so: How much?
  • Does happyness attract new people/industries?
  • How many residents can live in a basic low density zone?
  • And other basic stuff like that.
DIsappointingly, most of what I found was do-this- and do-that-information. Beginner guides, tutorials and so on.

Does anyone know good sources of reliable, playtested information? I'm most interested in sheer, dry numbers.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

Taxes just effect happiness, happiness effects leveling up. Too high makes them unhappy, too unhappy they abandon. I tend to leave them be, but I think 12% is about the max without making them unhappy.

Click on a house and it tells you how many people live there, 5 or 6.

I dont think numbers and optimisation matter that much to the sim, you cant really optimise to any effect, its not really that kind of game. Theres no real formula or rules, its pretty loose in the respect.

Thanks for your answers, guys. I found the wiki. And knowing the depth of the EU2-Wiki, for example, I was a bit disappointed by it.

Hm. I heard people saying, that it's more like a painter. But even then, the engine is driven by numbers. I'd like to know them.
Thanks for the information on taxes.

Do you know what drives growth/demand?

Well thats basically how it is, its a play it your own way type of game where almost anything works. Theres no real rules. The numbers dont really matter. Which is why probably some people call it a city painter.

Take RCI for example, Theres no real formula to RCI, 3-1-1 5-1-1, 1-1-1, 8-4-1 20-0-4, almost anything goes, Its actually impossible to balance, I remember trying once, and it works worse than just zoning what you feel like.

I did some RCI tests and found residents dont need shops or jobs, you just have to zone enough of it to keep your green bar growing. Theres no real link between the 3, as long as you have roughly enough workers youre fine.

Growth is pretty basic, the RCI meter is a bit of a red herring, as in trying to satisfy it will cause you more trouble than not, as long as you have some green bar zone that, once the green bar has gone zone some jobs to create more green bar growth.

The reason you cant find the info you are looking for is because there is no need for it.

I want a mod that makes things matter more.
