Hello, guys. I didn't pay much attention to Battletech's development process until it hit the pre-release phase and now I want to see more details.

So far I found 2 streamers: Cohh and Bombadil. Cohh is not my cup of tea and doesn't know what he's doing, Bombadil has only 2 missions out of the tutorial stage. Did I miss someone? Are there more steamers or that's it and I better check the pvp vids of Betav2?

I wouldn't check the PvP betav2 vids considering how much things have changed. The two you mentioned are the two main ones I am aware of.

Cohh is learning quickly and is much farther along, if you just want an idea of what a more difficult mission looks like, check out ep. 20 of his stream on youtube.

Bombadil is slow and methodical, too slow and methodical for my tastes often times, but he knows the lore and mechanics.

Personally, I'd rather watch Cohh make mistakes then watch a 20 minute flanking maneuver against 2 tanks lol. j/k

Definitely. Despite Cohh's inexperience, Bombadil is the type who moves the squad one square at a time in XCOM just to get max advantage on pod activation.

Now that Cohh is attempting harder missions in ep20, it's much more entertaining to see him getting punished.

Start with ep 1 here:

It's not just a case of Cohh not knowing what he is doing and being inexperienced, unless you mean to extrapolate that in general terms meaning he doesn't know what he is doing in games in general. Regardless of what game you are playing, you do not take your tiny, essentially unarmed and unarmored scout and charge it several turns of movement further ahead than your squad can support, such that it winds up facing all the enemy's fire alone. Worse, you do not split your forces or 'sprint' all your mechs into enemy contact! This is just basic common sense in gaming, which he seems to have none of.

To make matters worse, it drives me absolutely nuts that he blithely ignores that fact that his pilots are sitting on reams of unspent XP, that he can refit mechs, etc.. His mechs are using the same default armor as they started the game with, the same default heat sinks, etc.. Watching him play is so frustrating, I'd rather go to the dentist.

I think Cohh does pretty damn good considering how little experience he has with the game. Been enjoying his streams a lot, and that's coming from someone who usually hates twitch streamers.

I just watched one minute of episode twenty (you'd think he would have learned something by now). He's facing equal mech weight, that caught him flat footed (he sprinted into contact). He's got one of the heaviest enemy mechs down to red CT, centered, out of cover and right in front of him, and he's got a couple of guys to fire with. What does he do? He starts firing on an untouched Jenner a bit further away. To those who "respectfully disagreed' with my above post...

It's not a question of experience "with the game". The principles of concentration of fire, etc., are universal both in reality and in all games, and he seems to be utterly incapable of such basic common sense.

Cohh is making a lot of mistakes because he has found some things that appear to work for him when fighting low level pirates and now that he is fighting more heavily armed pirates and other enemies, he is not changing his tactics as fast as he should.

He is trying to focus on killing mechs to get as much salvage from them; removing both legs, headshots, but it is not the best tactic.

He found out that ignoring a SRM carrier is not good. His Blackjack copped a full salvo of 10 x SRM6 and pretty close to 50% of them hit. The stream of missiles was just going and going....

He has started to look at how much armor is in various sections and how much damage he is going to do, but he still makes silly mistakes.

One is that he is focussed on moving to get evasion pips and forgets if a pilot has Bulwark or is in cover.

He will elarn but he shows that even a noob player can still have fun and play the game without being discouraged.

I have watched up to ep20 right now, and I have to honestly say that the first episodes were total cringe but he is getting a better grasp on the game mechanics, and seem to be learning from his mistakes. However, he continues to make head scratching tactical decisions. He make a lot of references to x-com, which I have to assume means he has played that game extensively. I don't understand how someone who has played x-com can be so bad in the tactical decision making department.

I get his thing where his is "learning the game with his viewers" but I am very disappointed that the very first twitch streamer that HBS gave campaign access to is so new and haven't watched even the dev streams.... I would think your game would show so much better in the hands of a more experienced gamer.... Or really one who has a basic concept of tactics.

Seeing his Blackjack get blown up the third time was hilarious. Sure, he kept forgetting some mechanics existed and was derping out often on pure tactical level but it's still entertaining and he muddles through regardless. He has definitely improved since day 1 and will probably continue to do so as opposition increases.

TBH, there wasn't any point in playing optimally when you are only facing half armored light mechs and light tanks - tactics will change as situation changes. Sit back and enjoy our short moments of superiority because when Beaglerush gets his hands on this game, he'll make all of us 'vets' look bad. :D

Thanks for the tips guys. Damn shame we only Cohh and Bombadil to watch, I hope devs will share more keys with potential streamers. Cohh may not be that bad yet the way he does his streams doesn't click with me. Being somewhat bad at the game doesn't help. I'm pretty sure devs picked him to show that Battle tech can be accessible to complete newbies to the universe.

I just don't like streams or "let's play" videos in general due to being more of a roleplaying kind of person. I want to get into the game and feel the atmosphere. Cohh does his stuff in an open room so he has a lot of interruptions. Throw enough of them together and puff, all the mood is gone.

I'm very biased here, sure. But when I want to see a vid about a specific game - I don't care about streamer's wife. Or his cat or his toddler or his dog or that guy X who subscribes for Y weeks without missing a stream or the fact Cohh will stream another game soon or what have you. Know what I mean?

Anaro Sunfire is interesting to watch with his game-focused commentary and mulling over tactics. 0 interruptions too. Alas, he's waiting for the full release like the rest of us. Would be awesome if devs would give some keys to active beta members with highest contributions via bug reports or suggestions. This way players will get a more sophisticated and constructive approach to the game.

I noticed some of that too. If anyone has a comm channel open to Cohh and you haven't already pointed out these tips, please pass them along.

- sometimes cover and/or staying back are better than evasion pips
- Gunnery and Guts appear to be better for skills than piloting or tactics (unless maybe you're building up some sort of duelist melee build)
- when refitting mechs, keep hitting the max armor button like you have been but then, if you have an arm without weapons, consider stripping armor from that limb to put elsewhere.
- I saw you pass up a cockpit +1 in a store, given your blackjack's history you may want to reconsider that for the sake of your pilots ;)

Not true. You can learn basic game mechanics from watching the beta videos. For example, the Red City playthrough is much heavier on tactics than anything you get from Cohh (or, IMO even Bombadil).

What kills me is watching him OBSESS over getting movement chevrons. He'll leave cover for ONE chevron. He'll move a guy with Bulwark, for ONE chevron.
And he sometimes does the same thing over "high ground." He clearly has never done a cost/benefit analysis on the various defense postures.

That's something that I didn't "learn" from his stream, so much as it just confirmed what I already knew: do NOT get into range of a SRM carrier!

Man some of you people are just...I cant even say it here. If I was not already a 25 year vet of Battletech and loving this setting your attitudes expressed here would completely turn me off.

He was getting a TON of interested feedback and questions from people who have never seen the game before. It bodes well for the goal of "In success..."

Some of you people need to take some yoga or learn meditation, because as a lot of his moves were cringe-worthy they were also funny and a good lesson on what NOT to do and that you can still succeed with out being 1000% optimal. Also showed that you do not have to save scum in order to still positively progress. That is better than watching some boring grognard take 15 minutes to move 1 hex.
