It's not even speculation. That's pretty much what the flavor text said, if you read the blurb closely.

It isn't, actually. The text says that the "science officer successfully oversaw the evacuation of the entire crew". As the science officer is a member of said crew, she would have evacuated as well, which is why it doesn't make sense that the event caused her to die anyway.
