Fascism gets its second wind because of communism, which is only in power in the first place because imperialists in germany wanted russia out of ww1. Wheels within wheels.

Freed from one shackle, to be enchained by manacles far worse.

What do you mean? It is true liberation of the workers! :p

Fascism gets its second wind because of communism, which is only in power in the first place because imperialists in germany wanted russia out of ww1. Wheels within wheels.

Interesting take on it. At least fascism in South Africa survived because of communism, which again really started because of German intriguess as you said :p However NATO did invade Venezuela, and South Africa's army is very small. As you can see it is estimated they have 3-5 "divisions", while NZ have 42-68 "divisions"! Top that with SA not committing to the war (which the other former dominions have done) you can wonder how fascist they really are and if they'll survive for long. Or perhaps they hope they'll be left alone if they just sit back in SA.

Chapter 59: The Forgotten War
australian_soldier_korea.jpg

A soldier greets Korean children.

While the rapid Soviet conquest of Europe along with the conquest of Greenland and Iceland occupied the collective attention of the world an important battle was to be fought in the Far East. It did not quite catch the attention of the world mostly due to preceding events and especially succeeding where the new atomic age will unleash its hell upon the world in all its horror. This forgotten war was however not one without importance. Despite the campaign on the Korean Peninsula being a battle where Deep Operations, dubbed by the West as "Russian Blitzkrieg", were at its apex the invasion itself was not a battle prompted by land conquest, but rather a tug of war over naval and air superiority in the Far East.

uss_massachusetts_bb-59.jpg

The battlecruiser Volgograd steaming out of Vladivostok.

Ever since the Second World War the Soviet Far East was crippled after several engagements with the then superior Imperial Japanese Navy. The Red Fleet of the USSR had for years been negleted in favor of the Red Army. This was natural as Russia had little to no tradition of naval development and the battles at hand (first Germany and later NATO) were battles that would primarily be fought on European soil. This changed however in late 1945. The Soviet Admiralty pressed STAVKA and the leadership of the Union to focus on the Far East. The Far East Fleet reported a significant increase in US military and merchant convoys entering the Sea of Japan. Intelligence analysts delivered a report where it was deemed likely the Americans was preparing an invasion of Communist China and USSR through Korea and even Japan and Nationalist China. Moreover troop concentrations was reported to increase in India and Indochina from this passage. Perhaps worse off was the grim prospect of not only a US base of operation in the Pacific, but a possible deployment of B-29 bombers capable of delivering nuclear payloads to Communist China and the Russian jewel of the pacific; Vladivostok. The response was the highly modern battlecruiser of Volgograd being completed and attached to the Far East Fleet in Vladivostok.

Volgograd herself was the last ship of the Kronstadt class which was the improvement of the 69 project having the same name, but was ultimatelyskewed the very definition of battlecruiser into its logical limits rivalling even fully fledged battleships. The Kronstadt Class itself was planned during the interwar period as a response to the German Bismarck Class, the panerschiffe and the American South Dakota Class. The Kronstadt class battlecruisers were armed with nine 380 mm main guns (15 inches) and 130 mm anti-air guns, with planned refitting of increasing the main armaments to nine 406 mm (16 inches) in the future. These gun batteries were not as powerful as the US "treaty battleship" of the South Dakota Class, but had similar armament as the infamous Bismarck Class. Following the end of the Second World War the Kronstadt Class was put into production and finally laid down and commissioned. These beasts combined the firepower and armor of modern battleships (however falling short of modern battleships such as the massive firepower of the Soviet Republic Battleship Class) with greater speed and agility of WW2 era battlecruiser (reaching a marching speed up to 33 knots, compared to 30 knots of the Bismarck and 27 knots of the South Dakota Class and 31 knots of the 1944 commissioned US battlecruiser class Alaska. Put differently it could engage battleships directly and outrun other battlecruisers. Additionally due to the recent advances in missile development the Kronstadt Class battlecruisers were outfitted with two missile domes that were planned to house future guided missiles, making it the first missile-battlecruiser. With the Volgograd the Far East Fleet got a renewed purpose and the morale surged. In late 1945 the Far East Fleet steamed out of port with the Volgograd at its helm engaged in a course de guerre poised at sinking America convoys in order to prevent US forces from building up in the region, and perhaps invade the motherland herself.

KAAMrrG.jpg

The sinking of Volgograd and Kaganovich wasa devastating to the Far East Fleet and Soviet strategic ambitions in the Pacific, and provoked the invasion of Sotuh Korea.

The Volgograd became a true menace in the Sea of Japan sinking American convoys left and right. Naturally this did not go unnoticed and the US Navy replied. And that with devastating and decisive force. In early May several US Carrier Battlegroups was spotted in the Western Pacific along with the seas of Okhotsk, Japan, North and South China Seas. These battlegroups counted for a total of 10 aircraft carriers, 10 battleships and 11 battlecruisers*. While the Volgograd might have been classified as an apex predator it was no match against the might of the US Pacific Fleet. The Soviet Admiralty reacted to this grave threat by ordering the Far East Fleet to return to port and instead act as a fleet in being, tying up US resources to prevent another costly loss of precious convoys. However on its way to Vladivostok, Volgograd was detected by a squadron of US destroyers who tailed the battlecruiser and relayed her position to the nearest strike force that was headed by the USS Midway. The chase had begun. Several battleships and battlecruisers was sent after the Volgograd luring her into the airwings of USS Midway. The captain of Volgograd ordered a dash toward Vladivostok hoping to repeat the success of the daring Channel Dash by the Baltic Fleet. At first the Volgograd and heavy cruiser Kaganovich plowed its way through several cruisers and destroyers, but before they could reach the safety of their port US battlecruisers cut off their trajectory, while air wings from the USS Midway and supporting carriers harassed the capital ships. The capital ships turn around, relayed the message to the fleet commander that they could not dock in Vladivostok and was instead ordered to dock in North Korea. The torpedo bomber attacks had been deflected by the capital ships while the opposing battleships and battlecruisers were simply outrun. However by chance an airwing from USS Midway had due to a navigational error been sent off course, now they were in the clouds above the two capital ships steaming towards safety. They dropped down from their concealment and focused their firepower on Volgograd with crippling effect. The bridge was hit with all officers aboard, save for the captain and two other officers, being killed in action. Moreover the engine was severly hit reducing its speed.

With a Volgograd being reliant on communications without modern comm systems, its speed severly reduced and most of its officers killed in action its fate was sealed off the coast of Korea. The two capital ships came under continuous attacks from land based US aircrafts, around 570 in total. The two ships alone was not enough to withstand these attacks and the situation was further complicated by US capital ships lurking in the open seas. By midnight, local time, the Volgograd and Kaganovich was finally sunk. All hands were lost at seas, 3236 officers and sailors in total. With the sinking of Volgograd only four Kronstadt Class battlecruisers remained, as of 1946 there was no immidiate plans to recover or replace the Volgograd due to the construction of two aircraft carriers along with a further three battleships of the tested and powerful Lenin Class and four Cold War era Project-24 battleships.

Soviet preparations.

Naturally this was a major morale boost for the US Navy and the homefront alike who sorely needed a victory after a string of crippling defeats. The Volgograd the scourge of the Pacific was no more. For STAVKA and the Admiralty this meant they had to be faced with the grim reality of not only US Naval supremacy, but also the superiority of aircraft carriers over big gun capital ships. Trotsky was reportedly furious and ordered the immidiate conscruction of four aircraft carriers to the Far East Fleet which had been delayed for years to due to the prioritization of big gun capital ships. With 10 American carriers lurking in the Pacific with US forces building up in Korea, Trotsky personally ordered the invasion of Korea. Several airwings was sent to the peninsula and commenced air offensives, with Soviet figthers fighting for control of the skies and bombers harassing American troops concentrations, infrastructure and airports. The honor of invading Korea fell to the 1st Far East Front and Meretskov, meanwhile the 2nd Far East Front would be stationed along the Far East Coast to prevent a possible US naval invasion. Their objective was to blitz into Korea before US forces could muster enough troops for an invasion of their own, B-29 bombers to strike at Vladivostok and before Japan and Nationalist China joined the war.

44687346_303.jpg

Retreating American troops.

For full two days US forces in Korea was pummeled from the air by bombers and land by howitzers, mortars and rocket batteries. Seoul was reportedly reduced to rubble by artillery, bombers and even ballistic missiles alike. The missiles were still a secret and it was believed these were simply the usual artillery strikes. In the air experimental MiG-9s was also given their field tests, some US soldiers reported aircrafts coming in with high speed and without propellers! But these reports was dismissed as exaggerations by shell shocked soldiers. In the full two days of bombardment the US troops was taken off guard with the airbases in full flames. Without hostile air supremacy US forces retreated and left their exposed positions as Soviet T-44s crossed the 38th parallel. After short lived, but intense fighting Seoul was taken, the American airforces obliterated on ground and her troops retreating panick stricken to the south of the peninsula.**

nQu7Lwt.jpg

Pact troops overwhelm South Korea.

In tandem with the hasty US withdrawal Soviet and Korean forces, joined curiously by Austrian and Luxemburgian troops, swarmed the South Korean countryside. Ever since the end of the Second World War Korea had been split in two states along the 38th parallel reflecting the two occupation zones. The Red Army was liberal in their use of Korean volunteers on both sides of the parallel and boasted the narrative that the communist forces was here to liberate Korea after decades of imperialism and occupation, let it be by Japan or USA. While several Koreans bought this narrative, indeed the majority of South Korea resisted the Soviet invasion, however with American forces pulling south toward the Pusan Perimeter the small scale insurrections were no match for the highly mechanized invasion force of the USSR. Over the next days Soviet motorized divisions, tank divisions and mechanized corps speraheaded a rapid advance over Korea pacifying most of the countryside and settlements facing only token resistance.

gu5fH6g.jpg

After a week long blitz almost all of Korea are taken out.

It was not until the 6th of July outside of the defensive line that was dubbed the Pusan Perimeter that Soviet forces met significant American and South Korean opposition. However the Americans stood little chance of defending against the armored thrusts of the Red Army without any meaningful air support, moreover US High Command changed their strategy in Korea. Despite the elimination of Soviet surface raiders they had given up holding Korea in the face of the premature Soviet invasion. US High Command correctly assumed the Soviets would not risk a war in the Far East while they were still fighting in the west and more importantly not built up their forces in the east. It was however ironically the sinking of Volgograd and Kaganovich that prompted the early Soviet invasion. The Soviets rightfully feared the US would take advantage of their naval supremacy and field a significant force in Korea that in turn threatened Vladivostok and Communist China. Moreover it was important to seize control over Korea to deter Japan and Nationalist China from joining the war, giving the US another base of operations for their invasion forces and their atomic bombers. With the rapid success and the general retreat of NATO troops, US doctrine shifted toward building up a sizeable invasion force to pulling their troops out from the port of Pusan and back to the United States. The race had begun between the powers, one to hold out the aggressors long enough for their troops to be evacuated and for the other side to take eliminate the NATO forces in Korea before their withdrawal. On the 6th forward elements of the 1st Far East Front engaged American troops stationed on the western outskirts of Pusan, by the end of the day the American defenders were pushed back into the city itself.

rnWH1j5.jpg

The Battle of the Pusan Perimeter begins.

After almost a day of self imposed ceasefire the Soviets begun their attack again on the 7th right before midnight. The forward elements mostly composed of light infatry and light tanks struggled to gain foothold in the city of Pusan itself, who was gallantly defended by American, Canadian and Anglo-Indian troops. This defense was on the other hand made possible by favorable urban territory and the fact that it was forward and recon elements that was sent into the suburbs of Pusan and not the main force. For example at least two Mechanized Corps was scheduled to arrive near Pusan over the next day and join in on the assault on the city itself. What these corps would spell for the defenders was highlighted to the north and south of Pusan where the perimeter was pierced after the very first hour and the lines was about to fall at any minute. The very next morning the southern and northern flanks of Pusan fell after South Korean and American forces was forced to withdraw in the face of Soviet arieal supremacy and relentless artillery barrages. Pusan was surrounded.

Dxw3fW0.jpg

South Korean defenses are reduced to merely Phusan.

On the 9th of July the battle of Pusan proper culminated. A whole two American Armored Divisions, 3 infantry divisions, one Canadian and one Anglo-Indian infantry division held the city center. The majority of the American and NATO forces had pulled out the preceding days, still a significant number of troops and equipment remained in the city. With the Soviets and North Korean attacking from all sides and from the air the NATO troops was unable to retreat. Despite their valiant defenses the Soviet overmight was too much to bear. For example it was reported that the two Armored Divisions, who were naturally tasked with repelling the brunt of the attacking force, simply had insufficient capabilities in the face of medium T-44 and heavy Trotsky tanks, meanwhile the Soviet tanks cut the American tanks right open. By the end of the day after Soviet thunder runs into the city center reducing the defenders to several cut off pockets the NATO garrison surrendered. Korea was united once more.

On-This-Day-Korean-War-ends-with-truce.jpg

South Korean soldiers surrender to Pact troops.

Trotsky and Kim Il-Sung celebrated this as a major blow against colonialism and imperialism, meanwhile the South Koreans who did not accept the new communist rule argued that Korea was nothing more than a colony under Social Imperialism - these voices were soon silenced. The rapid Soviet advance shocked USA. The Soviets proved that they were still very much capable of complicated deep operations, even with several distractions in Africa, major manpower and equipment losses and the lack of any real power projection in the Pacific. The rapid conquest, or liberation, of Korea dissuaded Japan and China from entering the war on the side of the US. One can only wonder the consequences of a fullscale landwar with a full US buildup in Korea, China and Japan along with atomic bombers posed at Vladivostok. In that sense it was a major success for the Soviet Union. However the war in Korea was as mentioned earlier totally overshadowed by the coming mushroom clouds. A new theater of war would open along with the to date most hardfought military campaigns and humanitarian catastrophes where hundreds, perhaps over a million, souls would perish as the generals of both sides liberally embraced the new atomic age in their desperation to end the war quickly. Despite its major strategic importance, the Battle of Korea would go down in history as the Forgotten War.

------------------------------------------

*The tiny Far East Fleet was engaged in battle with this massive fleet, naturally I ordered them to return to port. I tried to save my sole BC, but as you can see it was all in vain :( The Far East Fleet is once more nothing but a shadow.

**There was not much of an ingame fighting here. Doesn't make much sense however, so the reason for the empty northern part of South Korea is explained narrative wise as a massive Soviet surprise attack that pushed the US forces out of their positions. The ballistic missiles here are the second tier missiles, OTL V2 rockets and not the ICBMS. A few of them was able to reach Korea. In game I had no jet figthers there, however the research of them was completed a few days later. Thought it was a fitting homage to the OTL jet war over Korea that there was high risk, but limited, field tests of the jet fighters over Korea.

And here came the next update! As you can see it is kinda complicated to cross into Alaska from the Far East when we don't have any capital ships in the Pacific (at the moment) and the US have at least 10 CVs, 10BBs, and 11 BCs lurking in the Pacific :( The next update will be one about a clash of giants, you can begin to guess where it is! After that I think there will be another interlude that explain the state of the Soviet Army, its composition, OOB and doctrine.

God Korea is a mess to take if the enemy prepares right. When I was Russia and leading a grand alliance of all the chinas, retaking the western seaboard was easier than smashing through that last south korean port. The issue of a naval power with no competition and ludicrous manpower vs invincible land powers with no ships made this war hard fought at times.

Still, Russia here have taken the place with little trouble and smacked the U.S. in the face once again. This was supposed to be the area they were strongest, the pacfic theatre. Yet even when they destroy the russian fleet, the soviets still kicked them out of another precious landing area and prevented any help coming in from allies elsewhere. At this point, Eisenhower has got to be throwing his hands in the air and just trying to nuke their way to saftey. Nothing else seems to work.

True they may be the strongest in the Pacific, but I remember an old battalion chief once said something along the lines, that by the end of the day it is the boots on the ground that win the war (yes I'll admit officers and soldiers will always look towar their own branch favorably). US forces was superior at sea, however the Soviets pressed their advantage at land before the US managed to fully take advantage of their naval supremacy and fill Korea with troops. Remember that south Korea is quite small compared to Communist China, USSR and North Korea. If the US had built up in Korea along with Japan and non-commie China joining them, then the story could take quite the different turn. However Japan can still join, and then the USSR risk a naval invasion. Sadly enough, nukes may be the answer for both sides to end this conflict that by the looks of it are turning into an impasse.

You mean the only Korea? Hopefully Trotsky will be able to moderate Kim! But given Trotsky's warlike nature I wouldn't bet too much on it just yet, still he's proven himself more democratic than Stalin, but that can't be that difficult?

Expect the next update soonish, it's a little late due to the Christina season, but I'll try my best to sneak it in before New Year.

Chapter 60: The Great Game
Csy47at.png

Soldiers crossing into the barren wasteland.

1st of August 1946. The great catastrophe that was the Third World War, the war to end them all as so many before it, the war that was prophesied to usher the world into an age of democracy - let it be liberal or proletarian - and peace had claimed over 6 million military casualties in one year. That is without counting the ravaged countrysides and cities of Europe, Africa and Korea from the raging war machines, and the atomic bombings of the USSR and Spain. It was believed WWI could not be outmatched in pure agony, destruction and violence, but the Second World War disproved this claim. Likewise it was believed the first 12 months of the Third World War could not be outdone. Unfortunately this prediction proved to be false. The fall of 1946 would in many ways become the fall of human morality and civility. A campaign that was intended to be a rapid one to bring the opposite side to the negotiation table instead dragged on, and in the mealstorm hundreds of thousands of human lives. The fall of 1946 would result in the culmination of industrial warfare and slaughter, only to be replaced by atomic warfare. Even with the fall of Europe the war was far from over, instead it escalated into a new low point. The age of great blitzes across Europe was over, instead new and old weapons alike joined forces to inflict maximum casualties.

radio-moscow-1947.jpg

This is Moscow calling.

7th of October 1946. News and events spread from the front. Reports that the Soviet and American governments sought to repress to not cause widespread panick. The Soviet public became anxious over the news of massive casualties and widespread desertions. Moreover the great grainery of the Union, that is Ukraine, had still not fully recovered from the atomic blasts from the previous year meanwhile the economy was slowing down as most of the male population perished and inherent flaws in the Soviet system. Trotsky had mostly retreated from public life in the wake of the liberalization of the political system and especially the order to begin Operation: Zapad. Trotsky knew the history of old, what happened if the head of state became the face of the war effort, while victories might bring glory over the leader, defeats and major casualties could invoke the wrath of the masses; something both the Kaiser and the Tsar experienced. Yet Trotsky was always a skilled orator and had in many ways the person that united the Soviet people and the broader socialist movement to remain loyal to their greater common goal. The burden of his office had reduced the once vigorous man, his hair was greyed out, his eyes bloodshot and his cane in one hand and his wife Natalia in the other as he limped forward. Nevertheless the father and protector of the revolution adressed the people of the Union over the radio on the 7th of October, to signal that he was back in public life and install revolutionary zeal among his subjects.

"Workers, farmers and soldiers!", he opened up his adress followed by a minute of silence. "People of the revolution and warriors of the Red Army! A year ago we stood all united hand in hand, and thwarted the yoke of despots, class struggle and the exploitation of the people. But some still fight, to end the revolution, strip us of our liberties and make us serfs again. They are across the frontlines. In America and the enslaved continents of Africa and Asia. Landowners, the gentry and factory owners. The armies of reaction and imperialism. They do not appreciate the liberty the International have given to the laborers and farmers. To all of you! To those who used to work triple shifts for an insignificant salary, for mere crumbs. Today we all raise up our arms and cry 'No!', we will never surrender our liberty. No! We will never become their serfs again. I know that each one of you are ready to serve the cause of revolution and the proletariat in the name of solidarity and internationalism. Ready to sacrifice your life for the great struggle ahead". The radio adress ended and soon Trotsky made several public appereances all over Europe and shook hands with the troops. But why this sudden public relations offensive?

A6RW7U7.jpg

The rematch begins.

To answer that question, we must go back to August of 1946. Many believed the Great Game had reached its definitive conclusion following Southern Thrust, that it created a bufferzone between the USSR and the capitalist world. Instead it only made Soviet planners more paranoid. With the loss of Korea and more importantly Great Britain and the failed offensive into Iberia, NATO forces could only directly threaten the Union itself from India. True, the areas of Afghanistan and Iran was rugged and mountainous, still an invasion from there would threaten the soft underbelly of the great Russian bear - and the oilfields of the Caucasus and Central Asia. Then it was the matter of long range bombers capable of delivering nuclear weapons. STAVKA knew how much they had advanced in the fields of nuclear, ballistic and jet technology. Rightfully they feared nuclear strikes from the Indian sub-continent. On the first of August the chief of staff managed to convince Trotsky to invade India. The aging leader of the Soviet Union had at first been skeptical to launching a full out invasion of India, due to him believing the Indian population would revolt against their autocratic Princes, but more so due to the mountainous border regions that made the success of an invasion unlikely. Instead he had listened in on his personal favorite Tukhachevsky, who instead opted to strike at USA directly. However the recent defeat of the Far East Fleet turned away any childish notion of an invasion of the USA. Furthermore several exiled British and Europeans had fled to India to form volunteer units there and the USA had significantly increased their presence in the region. The arguments of Tukhachevsky was sidelined. A total of three army fronts was ordered to strike in from Iran, Afghanistand and Sinkiang - with their respective rearmed forces. The final round of the Great Game had begun.

1942-BattleofStalingradSnipers-01.jpg

Soviet soldiers battling in ruins somewhere around the border of India and Iran.

Tukhachevsky's warnings turned true. The rough terrain of the border region along with well dug in NATO troops quickly reduced the Soviet invasion to a standstill. The Red Army dispersed as a wave who hit a cliff. Only that these waves were composed of humans. On the first day only an airport was taken, that airport soon came under substantial counteroffensives. All over the front supplies failed to reach their troops due to poor or no existant infrastructure and inhospitable terrain. The offensives in from Afghanistan and Sinkiang was stopped alltogether. The Soviets outnumbered their foes vastly, but their numbers and supplies soon began to dwindle. As the 2nd of August closed to an end the Soviets suffered 40.000 casualties. 40.000 casualties in one day alone! Aleksandr Vasilevsky was tasked with crossing in from Iran and take on Baluchistan and take the port of Karachi to gain foothold on flat terrain and from there threaten Dehli and the central government of India. Faced with stiff opposition and the failure of traditional Soviet doctrines, that of Deep Operations, Vasilevsky was forced to again carry out doctrines that had not been employed since the Soviet civil war; the doctrine of human waves.

OBoVsAp.jpg

A minor breakthrough, at a terrific price.

Human wave after wave hit the Anglo-American defenses. New weapons was deployed, namely flying bombs with both conventional and unconvential warheads - in violation to several treaties - to break the NATO lines. Obsolete tanks and captured soldiers was forced to rush over minefields. Where days ago minefields would force the commanders to wait for sappers or find a different route they now rushed in with their men over the fields to clear them out. While these heavy handed methods was crude, they were effective. The Americans and British did not expect the Soviets to rush over the minefields and heavy fortifacations and had to pull their troops out from the intended killzones*. Close by the flying bombs and artillery that delivered their payloads Soviet troops followed, often in chemical suits. The conditions for the poor soldiers was only made by the heavy suits in the warm weather and tall mountains to climb. Several attacking Soviets were made casualties of pure exhaustion and lack of supplies. But these heavy handed methods payed off. On the 24th Vasilevsky had broken into Baluchistan, where the Fronts that was intended to break in from Sinkiang and Afghanistan had stopped alltogether. However Vasilevsky could not keep up the momentum. His troops was exhausted, supplies was critically low and the Anglo-American troops soon reorganized into defensive lines, harassing the Soviets at any given opportunity. Karachi was still not reached, and if the port could not be taken the entire invasion of India was at jeopardy. Drastic measures had to be taken.

gandhi-and-crowd.jpg

Indians under Ghandi rise up against the semi-colonial regime.

British Raj fought at one front against the Soviets, but an equally important front was the homefront. The Indian population was a population that was diverse. Diverse in religion, between Hindus, Muslims an Sikhs and various ethnicities and even nationalities. The British had promised these groups independence and democracy in the wake of the Second World War. Instead the growing aggression of Trotsky and the fall of the Empire left India under the rule of a British Viceroy and de-facto control under the yoke of authorian Princes. Movements for democracy and freedom was subsequently cracked down on by the Princes and British forces. Moreover the great famine had devastated the counrtryside, and little effort was made to fix these issues, as a far greater threat loomed in the west. Disillusioned many in the population grew radical and seeing as the beacon of liberty, USA, could not aid them in their struggle but instead sent occupational forces to India they turned to their only hope; revolution. The Soviets naturally supported this movement and so did the Congress of the International, and the Soviets became their only natural ally because of their conflict with NATO and stance of anti-imperialism. Arms and advisors was sent to India, and Trotsky himself held several appeals and speeches to the Indians brushing them into the broader communist movement claiming the people of Britain and America had grown decadent and turned a blind eye to injustice as they were content in their cafés. All over eastern and southern India both peaceful and armed demonstrations and strikes broke out. But the reaction from the Viceroy and the Princes was as swift as it was harsh. Troops was sent in to quell the strikes, with Ghandi, a central proponent for ppeaceful resistance, was executed. This not only infuriated large segments of the population, but the ones who strove for independence could now only rally behind proponents of violent resistance. The threat of insurrection or outright revolution lingered in the air. And they might have succeeded, had it not been for one fatal decision. One decision that would not shake only the Indians, but the world as a whole to its core. A decision that would unite the diverse people of the Indian sub-continent against their greater enemy. The Soviets had turned from prospective allies into outright adversaries.

ac6ROwU.jpg

Kuzmas mother.

Trotsky had promised the Soviet population they would show NATO Kuzma's mother following the nuclear attacks, basically to teach them a brutal lesson. But none had imagined where the Soviets would teach them this lesson. It was the population of Karachi who fell victim of the first Soviet atomic bomb ever used in combat. a 28 kiloton bomb was dropped over Karachi. Reportedly Trotsky was opposed to the idea of striking India with nuclear force, but after immense pressure he conceded. Military officials explained to him that the Soviets couldn't win the battle of India as it were now. Drastic measures had to be taken. The Chief of Staff of STAVKA resigned in protest as Trotsky gave the Air Force the thumb up. An advisor close to Trotsky later said "in one instance he aged 20 years, all his youth was stripped away from him". 10:18 in the morning on the 6th of September, after a month of bloody stalemate, the bomb fell over Karachi. The bombing shocked the Anglo-American troops and severed all means communications and supply in the region. Vasilevsky was quick to enter the area, himself of course being in a safe spot far away from the radiated areas. His soldiers, however, were not as lucky and were only given their standard chemical suits. Nevertheless Karachi was in just three days taken as the Anglo-American lines collapsed and threatened to cut off the troops stationed in the Afghan and Sinkiang border regions.

2v9f9sT.jpg

The strike toward Delhi.

The fall of Karachi meant a new port to bring in fresh supplies and better terrain for the Front under Vasilevsky to carry out their offensive plans. In the north the fronts entered Indian territory as Anglo-American troops retreated to create a new defensive line to protect Dehli. However the offensives was soon again contained by valiant Anglo-American defenses, a poor logistical system and rough terrain. The Soviets on the otherhand upped their game in the air. Entire fresh jet fighter squadrons was sent to India to dominate the skies and new airfields was under construction. Despite the cocky claim of the American pilot Yeager "First time I saw a jet, I shot it down" these new jets soon dominated the skies and was the tipping point. The Soviet Air Force now obtained air superiority and Anglo-American efforts was thus disrupted. However their land forces still reigned supreme and checked the incoming Soviet onslaught again and again. The most aggressive Soviet planners had prevailed with the bombing of Karachi and again managed to persuade Trotsky to accept another bombing, this time of both Delhi and Ahmedabad. Allegedly these bombings would force the Viceroy and the Princes to formally surrender, which again would force the United States of America to the negotiation table to end the war once and for all. 15:13 another 28 kiloton nuclear bomb exploded over Delhi, nine hours later another fell over Ahmedabad. NATO however did not waver their position. The atomic bombings did not end the war, but it killed hundreds of thousands and crippled the NATO defenses. Again Soviet forces spearheaded without the proper protective gear and took the two cities after some two weeks of brutal fighting around the cities and even in the radiated city center. Even with the loss of these cities the Viceroy and NATO refused to surrender. Their resolve only stiffened.**

The pocket of Punjab, one of the few theaters of conventional warfare.

Humanitarian devastation aside the atomic bombings and subsequent spearheads led to another collapse of the Anglo-American lines. This time around the two fronts striking in from Afghanistan and Sinkiang managed to cut off several Anglo-Indian and US divisions in what was later named the Punjab pocket. After around two weeks of vicious fighting in said mountains and hills the pocket was closed off. Here neither side employed nuclear weapons nor other means of unconvential warfare. Despite this both sides had taken notice of this new and horrid way of conducting modern warfare, and several engineer units was deployed with suits that was supposed to protect from radiation and being bale to clean it. Still the battles in these mountains would be more traditional with great armored confrontations and artillery barrages. But the Americans and British was cut off from supplies and reinforcements. After a week of bloody battle the last Anglo-Indian and American troops surrendered in the pocket.

IEqNjGb.jpg

The front in November before the final push for Bombay.

With all of north-western India pacified the Soviets turned their eyes to the south. From Nepal to Narmada NATO deployed a rag tagged defensive line. This line, however, was in open terrain and it was only rivers that seperated PACT and NATO troops from eachother. Moreover the Anglo-Indian troops was exhausted from the crazy offensives in the north and became demoralized. On the 4th of November the Soviets mounted and offensive hoping to take Bombay and reach the east coast before Christmas. With renewed vigour the Soviet troops rushed in and took Bombay and extended the frontlines several kilometers to the east. The war however would not end by Christmas. Instead only more destruction followed.

6snfH3W.jpg

The Soviet "christmas gift" and a desperate effort to end the war in India.

In their desperation to force the Indians to surrender and break their defensive lines, aswell as their spirit another three nuclear strikes was carried out on Hyderabad, Madras and Bangalore. Trotsky was repordetly shocked, and after his public relations tour to fix his own imagine, but also to convince the population they were fighting a just war and not waging genocide he famously stated that there should be no more nuclear attacks. That the cost of human lives and morality came at too tall of a price. Perhaps the Soviets became carried on in their effort to end the war and prevent further bloodshed and avenge the American nuclear bombings that they fell blind to their own destruction. Their intentions might have been well, and they might have understood the true extent of their crimes as the last bomb fell on Bangalore, but it is of little comfort to those who had to live through those infamous bombings. The local population suffered immensly, and so did the soldiers. Ruthlessly soldiers on both sides was ordered to fight in the radiated areas. In the years that was to come the soldiers and other service personell that took part in the Battle of India had a much higher cancer and malformation rate than the population as a whole. They paid the ultimate price for the barbary of the generals.

mYE3hq4.png

Scenes from the first bombing of Boston.

The year drew to a close. Two million casualties was endured in the Indian Theater and the elephant in the room was if the war would end at all, or if it would end with the total destruction of society and life as we know. In USA the war for the first time since the Civil War claimed casualties on American soil. On the 4th of December a major explosion was heard in Boston center, claiming dozens of lives. Local authorities first said it was an industrial accidents. But as the days of December passed by the number of explosions increased in major American population and industrial centers and airports on both coasts. The President soon publically blamed Soviet agents and sympathisers - with a brutal crackdown on everyone and everything that could be linked to communism or socialism - on the bombings and claimed they carried out acts of terrorism and sabotage. The truth however was quite different, and the course of the war would change as the American population had for the very first time experience the horrors of war, unlike the First and Second World Wars. America was under attack.

-------------------------------------

*These tactics was used by OTL USSR during WW2, but we differed from that doctrine TTL as Tukhachevsky was allowed to live. For those who don't know, conventional minefields aren't really meant to stop an attacking force or kill troops. It is instead meant to delay them or to funnel them into path e.g a killzone. That is what is reffered to here. By simply rushing over the minefields until they are cleared out, the defenders can be taken by surprise as their defensive plan need to be altered.

**I believed these bombings and the capture of Delhi would make them surrender, alas.. In game terms their national unity (yup old version! :D ) dropped, but not enough to make them surrender. I roleplay as the population of India and the greater NATO becoming more united against the Soviets in wake of these horrific bombings, likewise the bombings of the USSR and Spain only united the PACT against their common foe.

And I have mixed feelings regarding the Indian campaign. First of all I mostly invaded it due to gameplay, as I need to knock out both USA and Raj to end the war. But it also make sense to do it to totally control Eurasia and prevent and invasion of the soft underbelly. However the liberal use of nuclear bombs made me uneasy, and I do not know if the end justify the means in this scenario. I believed these nuclear bombings would make them surrender, but they were much more stubborn than I imagined.

And USA is under attack? I guess you'll have to either guess it here or wait for another update to find out what is going on over there right now ;)

Good lord!

As far as I know nukes became even less effective in forcing a surrender with the new patch, but in the old version it'd make sense from a gaming perspective to nuke the shit out of India...

Good lord covers it. As I said the campaign in Korea was overshadowed over the pure destruction in another theater. From a gameplay perspective I got into a bubble in trying to capitulate them. I guess the same happened to the Soviets in their drive to just end the bloodshed of their own countrymen.

But remember US fired 6 nukes already! That along with a massive buildup in Korea and India might justify a pre-emptive strike to prevent another nuclear attack.

The world will be cleansed and reborn in the ashes of the nuclear fire.. or so they say.
