In my latest VIP campaign with Spain I had a good economy going after a few decades. Then it came to a halt. Why? Dye.

All the dye was consumed by the first few great powers (I was at least 6th) leaving none for me. My regular cloths factories came to a halt and I couldn't buy more cloths, so all my new factories were useless. I couldn't even secure more dye since it was all in India (besides maybe one province, but that one was heavily defended)!

This seems very silly. There is no way India was essential for all the worlds clothing.

Here is a new proposal:

Have several goods avalible in 'infinite' quantity for a larger price. These goods would be those that could be produced locally or are otherwise easily obtainable such as cloths, timber, iron, etc. All countries could buy these goods at, say, 150% of the price on the world market. I think this would solve alot of the economy problems in Victoria.

I admit that it sometimes seems strange that basic commodities are sometimes inaccessible, but creating a a fall-back purchasing system would probably require hard coded changes, and thus ought to go on th VICII wish-list.

There has been no indication from Paradox that there ever will be a Vicky 2, and in any case for the time being, I'm guessing HOI 2 takes just about all the time they have. ;)

But people can dream and hope, can't they? :D

1945 to 2000! Let's see them model the Cold War!

Honestly, unless they do another Vicky (it could stand the revision)....
Well, thus far their games cover about a thousand years of a lot of history. Unfortunately, the strategy options before Alexander are not terribly interesting.

On a much smaller scale the classic Greek era could be very interesting. Lot's of city states, conquest and colonization, large empires, naval battles and advancements, evolution of ground warefare (chariots, hoplites, etc.), revolts, differents forms of government, intricate politics, mercenaries, and more! Now that I think about it, I say Paradox should most definatly do a classic Greek era game. It could cover say, from Darius the Great in Persia (~500 B.C.) to the early rise of Rome and their conquest of Greece (~200B.C.). The map would be from the Mediterranean (probably west Med.) to western India (in case there is an Alexander the Great sort of expansion). The provinces would be pretty large in the eastern areas and far west in the map, but in the areas with lots of action, the provinces would be the smallest yet for a Paradox game. This would nessesitate different levels of zoom in some situations, but that is not a problem. Who's with me? Maybe we can start a petition to Paradox to make their next game in this era (or perhaps after EUIII which is long due). :)

Regarding your problem, do this: 1. Buy one of those Dye rich provinces in Bengal from the UK (they are usually surprisingly easy to get; I got three provinces for one claim with about 100 relations) 2. Build Dye factories.

Well, it's always rough times in a market economy, and Vicky is the era of protectionism.

Get coal rich provinces and research the industry techs boosting coal production.

This is already done by Slitherine games (Legion, Chariots of War and Sparta) using the EU engine.

Those games don't look very historically accurate. Too much like Lords of the Realm II...

Actually, in a market economy, supply tends to meet demand, so I should be able to buy dye, or it should be too expensive for me to want to!

Maybe I can buy part of Indonesia from the Netherlands, or just smite them...

That's why I regard that trade embargo is an important diplomatic option, which is not provided in Victoria. If there is a trade embargo option, UK might be able to hinder a nation from producing clothes and control the textile industry of the world before a nation can build its dye factories.

Well, that's true - but only when it's possible. Sometimes, it's not technologically or resource-wise possible to increase supply; as is the case in the early vicky era. There are only so much dye to be found and so much people to work the dye... mines? plantations?

Eventually, though, technology will allow the world economy to increase the supply of dye by synthetic dye factories. Until then, well, you'll just have to wait. Or grab that dye for yourself (war over resources are another part of capitalism :)).
