Olson tells anyone who will listen that he will not resign from the General Assembly. However, since he realizes that, in the very least he should have had a cooler head, he decides that it is best to be cooperative.

He is ready to make a plea bargain, if one is offered. His only concerns is that he is let out of prison and allowed to resume his activities at the GA.

The prosecutor, who's dealing with dozens of misdemeanors today, doesn't have the inclination to throw the book at Olson (even though the conviction of an MGA would be a nice notch in his belt.) He offers a 500 ducat fine and 50 hours of community service.

"I don't see any point in dragging this out." Olson insists. "The fine and the community service seems fair enough." Olson briefly thinks about fighting the charges on principle, but decides he can do more for the ESA and Eutopia if allowed outside.
"I'll sign whatever form I need to sign." Olson promises.

The appropriate paperwork is filled out, the judge enters a guilty plea and hands down the recommended sentence. Olson is released within an hour of stepping into court to find the President loitering in the waiting room.

"Hey Josephus." Olson mutters sheepishly. He tries to force a grin, but it doesn't quite work. It's obvious that Olson feels as though he's let his party's leader and the President down. "Sorry about all this. I just want you to know that I'm ready to get back to work."

The judge sets a court date and bail at 20,000 ducats. He orders that Dank remain in the jurisdiction.

Hello comrade Josephus. Did you want to talk to me about something? It's been awhile. My shoulder hurts. How have you been?

Josephus puts his arms around Cornelius.

Cornelius. We've bailed you out. We'll pay for your legal defence.

I just want to say that, unofficially, I'm behind you. I know it was a situation that got out of control. You must realize, though, that I can't support any acts against the government while I AM the government.

If you feel your viewpoints are incompatible with the Party's you may feel the need to resign from the Party, but I won't pressure you to. We need all the support we can get. And until you're proven guilty, you are innocent in the Law's eyes.

That being said, I ask you, in my capacity as Party Leader to take heed of Speaker O'Floinn's words and resign your GA spot, at least until you're found innocent.

Anyways, you're free for now. Come along, share my limo.

It's good to hear that from you. Believe me, I understand the precariousness of your situation completely and don't hold it against you at all.

As for my status in the Party, I'm considering my options. Everything weighs heavily on the outcome of the trial. If I'm convicted, I would expect you would want me out anyways, so I would in that case quit.

Right now, I'm going to head for the Hammer and Sickle and do some heavy drinking and thinking. Thanks for the ride.

"Moxie" Fulder, temporarily down on the characteristic of his nickname, thinks he had better not interupt the President, and so when Cornelius Dank leaves he files a report on who posted bail and what he had overheard of the conversation between Dank and the President, and goes back to his usual duties, out of the public eye.

After Cornelius Dank has been re-processed by the detention facility personnel, "Moxie" Fulder shows the desk officer the previously issued instructions to interrogate the suspect, and is shown, with an observer, to the room designed for that purpose. When Cornelius Dank is escorted in he flips open his PDA and starts.
"Per Dank, there are few questions I would like to ask you. This is being recorded, by the way. Could you describe for me the meetings you had in the month before the Labour conference at CAFTA, including who you met with and when?"

(NPC used by previously granted kind permission of the mods.)

MIDA Loic de Fourgéres arrives, identifies himself, gets a briefing from one of the arresting officers, and arranges to speak with 'Francisco Rio' through the visitor glass panel.
"I am the Vice President and the head of the ministry that includes our Federal law enforcement. I am running for President and leading in the polls. I want to talk to you about your future.

Señor, we were lucky to catch you. We had some help, but we were lucky, I will not deny that. What happens to you now has not yet been decided. Part of it we both know. The Cuban government will 'deny any knowledge of your mission'. We still have capital punishment here. You know, it is funny, if the attack at the ECB hadn't happenned, it might have been abolished by now, so what Shakespeare had a co-conspirator say "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves" might apply to you. Maybe not, as we did have some luck.

Anyway, we know that the Americans would very much like to see you dead preferably by their own hands after they had fully interogated you. If I am elected, I will want to be a position to do them a favor, so you would have to offer us something extremely valuable to have a chance of tipping the scales. I am sure you have a good imagination, so figure out what might have a chance of working. I would like to hear your best offer first, because I won't hang around to hear any second effort. If you want to stay stoicly silient, I would understand, but the reason that we were able to find out about you was because Felix Castor was not very careful. So he would seem to be, in more ways than one, the reason why your are here now. I don't want the names, dates, and places now. Just tell me what you would be willing to offer and I will let you know later what we could offer in exchange."

Rio drums his fingers on the table behind the glass, a slight smile playing across his face. "I appreciate your tactics, Senor...you believe you have the upper hand on me, and you are pressing the issue. Very nice. Now, can we cut the bluster for a moment and talk like gentlemen?

I know what you want...and it's not me. I'm secondary to your other goals. You want hard evidence of Dank's guilt, the identities of all the members of the Friends of Durruti, the location of their hideouts and arsenals. But more importantly, you want a swift victory that you can wave in front of your spineless press and complacent public, showing them that you really are the hero. I hope the agent that found us at least got a day off or something before you horn in on their glory.

So here's my offer, Senor, and there will be no second offering. Right now, you have nothing on Dank except the circumstancial evidence that he was in my company. Suspicious, but enough for a conviction of treason? I doubt it. So in the end, what do you have? Me. Me in captivity, and a terrorist network fully capable of operating independently for as long as it wants to. You have a defeat, Senor. A martyr and a continuing terrorist problem. Hardly the high ground. And unless you have some particularly compelling evidence regarding my actual involvement in the ECB bombing, which I know you don't, you don't even have enough to convict me of that. Congratulations, the biggest terror strike in Eutopian history, and all you have is one man on a charge of Espionage! Well done, Senor!

I will give you the location of all Friends of Durruti hideouts, their arsenal, the names of all their members, and irrefutable rockhard evidence against Cornelius Dank, as well as all the plans for future strikes we had drawn up. In return, you will extradite me to Cuba, where my glorious leader, if I know him, will have me killed for either my status as a rogue agent or my failure, whichever way you want to put it. That's my offer, and it is not subject to negotiation. One way you get your victory and your Presidency, the other way you get a bomb under the podium for your inaugural speech. Either way, I die, so frankly, I have nothing to lose, and only you have something to gain. What do you fellows say? Ah yes, the 'ball is in your court', Senor."

"Thank you, Señor. That was quite consisely expressed. I appreciate your directness. You have suggested something worth considering. Dank's guilt is now a minor matter, if we do this deal it will easy to make some charge stick. I am mainly interested in rooting out the Friends of Durruti.

You have also made it clear what you would accept in compensation, which saves me the trouble of having to guess what would work. As I said before, 'I will let you know later', but of course it is now whether your terms are acceptable, not what we can offer. I don't think it will take too long to decide."

Loic signals the guard that the interview is over. He stresses that it is imperative that the prisoner not have any contact with anyone for the next few hours, and asks for a copy of the tape.

VP and MIDA Loic de Fourgéres arrives, identifies himself, and presents the agreement from the Commissioner of Justice regarding the prisoner known as Francisco Rio, whom asks to be conducted to the glass barrier visitor area.
"Señor sometimes known as Rio, sorry to have kept you waiting. I have spoken with the Commisioner of Justice, who has agreed with my recommendation. The terms you proposed are acceptable.

The matter of how we will make good on our deal needs to be worked out. We can't just ship you out after you provide the evidence. We would need some time to make sure that the people you finger, or at least a reasonable percentage, are in fact members of the 'Friends of Durruti'. Would a reasonable delay for FLEA to get far enough into the investigations after the arrests (which would all be carried out simultaneously as soon as practicable after you are done providing the evidence) to coroborate the evidence be acceptable. Perhaps a month? We would of course provide you with appropriate documents acknowledging the offer of imunity from prosecution for your turning 'state's evidence.' We would provide a copy to a lawyer someplace as well, if you wished, who could provide you with confirmation that it was received prior to your beginning to provide evidence.

In the meantime, we will provide you with better food, and will see what we can do about larger accomodations, although they will be still be lonely and sparse, for reasons you understand. After you have finished providing the evidence, we would be pleased to make whatever reading material available to you that you should want, or provide music or movies for your listening or viewing pleasure, although you would not be able to get to the stereo or TV, and the 'remote' would work by holding your hand in the path of a light beam, and thus would only have the simplest commands, like play, stop, fast forward, and rewind.

One more thing, this is a bit ironic actually. But, if you carry through your part of the bargain, once the convictions begin rolling in, you may be eligible for some part of the half million ducat reward, depending on who else comes forward in the meantime. You did express some doubts about Felix Castor letting you spend it, so maybe you would prefer leave us with instructions when you depart for its disposition in case you aren't able to let us know later.

This means of verifying our mutual performance acceptable?"

Rio mulls over Loic's offer while sucking idly on a Dum-Dum sucker, leaving the MIDA a moment to wonder where exactly he got such a thing. "Acceptable. Once my lawyer has received documentation of my immunity and our agreement, I will provide you with the information. I'll stay here until you are satisfied that your investigations are along far enough that I am no longer necessary, one month is agreeable...but I'm no fool, I know I don't have all that much say in how long you hold onto me, frankly. As for the reward, I will leave information with my lawyer as to what to do with any money you see fit to give...just deliver it to him and he will deposit it where I instruct. While I don't expect Senor Castor to let me spend a dime of it, I do have a family that will need looked after.

I look forward to the better food, and I will make up a list of books and movies I'd enjoy. A daily newspaper would be nice too, and all the classical music you can dig up...doesn't matter who or what period, I don't mind expanding my horizons. There is one more thing I would like to add to our agreement though, if it's not too much trouble..." He gestures down at his orange prison jumpsuit. "I'd like my suit back...the one I was wearing when I was arrested? White suit, matching hat, that one? I loathe this...thing. You can screen it or whatever it is you care to do before I get it back, but it'd be nice to have something decent to wear.

Otherwise, we are agreed Senor de Fourgeres. Have the paperwork sent to my lawyer, and I will tell you what you want to know." Rio provides the name and address of his lawyer, a man in Eutopia City with a Spanish-sounding name.

Loic notes the lawyer's name and contact information.
"I am glad we are agreed. The suit, yes, we can have that screened. Hopefully they will put it back together as well as it fits you now. Of course, after a month of fine dining, we may have to let it out a bit for you. The hat, do you wear that indoors? We'll return it when you have an opportunity to go outdoors, which will probably be when you leave. A daily newpaper, I understand the request, but it is important that we limit any possibility of communication. You are resourceful. Resourceful enough to acquire a lollipop when you shouldn't have anything. Thus, knowledge of current events or coded messages in ads, articles, or merely clever arrangements of print could establish communications in one direction. And you might be able to respond, considering how resourceful you are. So I will decline your request for a daily paper. Likewise, live television is out of the question as well. Just before you leave, I will drop by, and if you wish, discuss the geopolitical situation, as there might be something worth discussing then. In the meantime, would you like filet mignon or langoustine for dinner tonight? I'll have the papers prepared for you lawyer when I leave."
