Ok, this might seem a stupid question, but nonetheless it is stumping me.
I am in the tutorial, at the part introducing me to naval units (ie, ships and galleys). I am supposed to have units board a ship and unload.

How do I load my military units onto the ships? The ship(s) should be docked, right?

The manual is not very clear, and neither is the tutorial. Many thanks in advance.

I had difficulty with this initially as well. Your boats need to actually be in the adjacent sea zone, not in your port as you might think. Once your ships are in the sea zone right next to where your army is, select your army and move them onto the boat by clicking in the sea zone where your boat is. Have fun sailing. :D

a minor problem (only minor, not major :)) that annoys me is that naval movement and combat is sooooo tedious.

- you load troops onto ships (or maybe not)

- you set course for your ships (e.g. sending them towards another port)

- your fleet gets intercepted by some small annoying enemy flotilla or pirates, but you easily win naval battle

- then you are distracted by some other land battle (or some other event)

- and then 10 months later, you REMEMBER that your fleet is just sitting in the middle of the ocean and it has attritioned 90% to death. :(

I think this is rather tedious. If a fleet wins a naval battle, it should be ALLOWED to automatically continue on its previous course. It won the battle, it has every right to proceed along its chosen path. Doesn't anyone agree?

Of course, if the fleet loses the battle, it should be forced to flee to the adjacent sea zone. That's how it is now, and I agree with that.

best thing to do with fleets and armies is set in options for pause when they win battles, lose battles and or arrive at destination this way it reminds you to give next orders...however no pause can be set for when troops are finished loading ship...this i really would liek as in big wars i tend to forget whats going on..or when they should be done

I tend to agree-it's far too easy to lose track of an embarking force, than remember six months later when all you can do is return to port and start again because of the growing attrition risk!

Long Distance Transport

If you are sending troops from far away (say Europe to India), you can use the shift key with the right click to hop from port to port, thereby reducing attrition, but not having to watch over the fleet constantly. This doesn't solve the naval battle at sea problem, but is does reduce distraction. When you use this methos, the ships don't disembark troops as they go from port to port.
