Livonian Kaupo - The Traitor or The Saint? 1204 Start

CENTURY UPDATE



1. Scarponnois consolidate power – Scarponnois dynasty once grabbed the Emperor’s Office would never let it go. <Emperor > changed succession to Agnatic Primogeniture, dealt with all revolts. Today HRE and its emperors are the most formidable force on the planet.
2. Polish Statesman Eustarchy Lis – Turaida king Kiurupelg was changed by Eustarchy The Usurper. Eustarchy re-united former Polish lands and even managed to get Carpathian Crown to his dynasty. Consolidation of Poland and Carpathia did not happen only because of Livonian assassination of Carpathian Emperor.
3. Carpathian Bogomilists – Arpads continued expansion reaching Mediterranean and Black Sea. Bogomilists replaced Orthodox as major faith. Empire was kidnapped by Polish Lis dynasty, but after murdery of Lis Emperor went into anarchy.
4. Adventurous Scots – Who rules in Constantinople now? Earl Macbeth Somhairle The Impaler, vassal of Galloway Duchy. Constantinople was conquered by Duchess Forflissa Somhairle The Great of the Isles. Scotland apart from its home also holds Middle Francia and few other Duchies around Constantinople. Byzantium is down to couple of provinces in Balkans..
5. Protestants in Sweden – Sweddish King Astrad The Lawgiver of Bjalbo dynasty became Waldensian. Unlike France there was no Crusade called by Pope. Instead Sweden organized and also suffered from numerous holy wars. As a result they lost Duchy of Finland to Estonian Duke Uru.
6. Portugal - Iberia is united under Portugal flag and lead by de Bourgogne dynasty. King Gomes II The Bold conquered Castille as claimant (his mother was daughter of Castillian king) thus merging two kingdoms.
7. Turks – Turks replaced Mongols as major power in Central Asia. Persian Empire is now ruled by Anushtiginid dynasty who became Turkish. Anushtiginids are the regional superpower around Persia. Rum Turks rule in Anatolia.
8. Africa – Egyptian Sultan Adnan has the second biggest realm after HRE, but is in huge -2,500 debt. Sunni Mali is still united. Nubian kingdom was created North of Abyssinia by Monophysite heretic king Kelele. Abyssinia is still Miaphysite.
9. Stubborn Suomenuskos – the world is changing around them, but Chiefs of Kakisalmi and Savo live their own way. Still Finnish, still independent, still Suomenusko. Northern nation Perm is also ruled by Suomenusko king. It is beginning of XV century...
10. Baltics – Poland conquered Prussia and granted Marienburg and Galindia to Teutones. Livonia returned Latgale from Russia and conquered Duchy of Lithuania. Independent Archbishopric was created in former Lithuanian lands. Lithuanian King Alvydas The Blessed baptised and converted Lithuania.
11. Russia – Kiev emerged as important player. Rus stayed more or less same size.

What does above mean for Livonia? Teutones are dangerous, since they have lot of money and therefore is the most powerful player in Baltics. Russians don’t have huge treasury but much larger interest in Livonian lands and are more powerful than Livonia. Lithuania is now Catholic, it is no more alone and we should beware them and their allies.
 
PART 15 MATS THE ABLE. PARAGON OF VIRTUE

Council met with an update from newly hired Spymaster. He had investifated further the Impaler’s treasure case. Treasures they were looking for were not collected by the demonic being. No, it was about large amount of silver bullions confiscated by Livonian German conquerors from local pagan chiefs. Tsssssst, those bullions were to be sent to Rome, to Pope to finance the conquest, but apparently got lost on their way intentionally or unintentionally. Council decided this information should be kept confidentional and for all means treasures should be forever reffered to as Impaler’s. Spymaster updated that the exact location is possibly in the Latgale region but he needed more time.



Silver bullions were not the only treasures Mats was hunting. Courtier Maija was lovely, nice curves, soft lips. It was too easy! She felt for his first shy attempt and spread her nice legs.
Unfortunately his half-sister Helina found out and told everyone. What a nasty witch! She had to be punished. And she was. Helina was genius woman, and Mats loved geniuses.



Luckily nobody found out. Even her Mongol husband did not realize and thought little Arvet was his kid. Looking back at the events Mats realized he most likely fell to the trap set up by Helina. Had Arvet grow up genius he would be main heir to crown.


Grand Duke lost his head in pleasure hunt. Mats was looking only for the best genius and beautiful women from European courts. Duke visited foreign castles, walked through them and scanned for ladies. Mats preffered a little shy and romantic girls with intelect. He observed them, their breath, their smile, their bodies in medieval dress. Mats would invite them to Livonia. Where invite did not work, luxurious gifts were used, where gifts did not work marriages were arranged to Turaida courtiers. In Duke’s castle they had no chance to resist. Mats was true Prince Charming. They all submitted to his will.



Isabella de Thouars was his favorite conquest. Genius and shy English girl with nice smile. Definately Mats’ type. She gave him wonderful son Matthew. Duke legitimized boy right away. Later son was given to Isabella for education.
Some other Duke's children were born to Eva – wife of kinsman Vihivald. Husband never realized what was going on.
It was somewhat surprise but during years of constant seduction Turaida Casanova fulfilled Paragon of Virtue ambition.

Crusade for Greece was called and Mats The Able of course answered it. He joined crusade but not for long. Pskov and Novgorod fabricated claims on Livonian lands. Arp had returned to Livonia and was hiring new host! What an audacity! Grand duke had to return. This time Mats had full support and imprisoned the traitor easily.



Exact place of treasuries was located. They were burried near the Erle Hillcastle in Latgale. Steward Hoimulemb was sent there with men to take them out. Coincidence or not but Sudislav II declared war on Latgale right before Hoimulemb’s arrival.
Hoimulemb returned empty handed. Mats knew something was wrong just by Steward’s looks. Hoimulemb was thrown into dungeon and interrogated. Steward confessed. He actually did take the treasuries. Silver bullions were confiscated for Livonia and sold for 4,000 ducats.



Each and every ally called to arms declined. Carpathia, Portugal, Hungary, Lithuania, Golden Horde. Pff. Livonia had a large purse now and it was opened. Rus was destroyed on battlefield. Pecheneg slayers combined with Livonian regulars were victorious in battles of Pechori, Vainalinn, Jarva, Lihula, Hiiumaa... Mercenaries could be dismissed now as Livonian forces were sufficient to deal with remaining Rus levies. In paralel to war Matthew was developing rather well and was nominated heir being only 12 years old. His mother Isabelle was made Spymaster and Designated Regent of Livonia just in case.



Marshall advised Grand Duke to stay in Turaida until the conflict is settled. Mats agreed. As major surprise to many Duke just could not resist his curious nature and joined small unimportant forces near Livonian border. Why? WHY???? He was captured in the battle and delivered to Sudislav II.

Latgale was lost. Again.
 
I was so pissed off the night I was playing it through :) Now, I have a cool mind over it, but then looking at the screen I had to fight tension to quit the game and go sleep. Start over next day :)
But, I had this unexpected 4000 monies thing, so still being angry quickly pushed declare war button again.
 
PART 16 MATS THE ABLE. WINTER IS COMING!

After Mats signed the capitulation act his nephew Sudislav II of Rus invited him for dinner. „Not hungry,” replied Livonian Duke, „bring me a horse!”. Russian councillors laughed. Mats was given horse, and accompanied with trustful men he rode home. Near border at the tavern they exchanged horses and a messenger was sent back to Kremlin. The war had just started!



Allies dissapointed again. Carpathia, Portugal and Golden Horde, none of them honored the call. It was OK, since „Impaler’s Treasures” were enough to win the war. Livonia had 5855 ducats. Mercenaries were hired as previously.
Battle of Belo Ozero was initial success, but after mercenaries were fired Livonians suffered defeat near Vyazma. In Jersika and Pastavy Grand Duchy was successful.


Lithuanians were reborn. Newly baptised Catholics conquered Lithuanian Archbishopric at the beginning of Livonian-Russian wars and now were looking further. King Alvydas The Blessed declared war on Sudislav for Latgale. Now it was three powers fighting for the same piece of land.



Matthew Turaida became adult in these turbulent times. He turned out skilled tactician and was put to command left flank of Duchy’s main force. Young heir got married to Polish Countess, but he still continued to lead Livonian army.



With Matthew Livonians won decisive battle of Kreuzburg against Russians in June. On year 1423 Rus signed capitulation and Latgale was returned to Livonia. Treasury was down from 5855 to 4443.



As they say: „There is never peace under Latgale birches.”. Livonians had to continue the fight, now against Catholic Alvydas and his allies. In countless battles of Kaunas, Jurbarkas, Erle, Kaunas again, Selpils, Osel Livonian forces were victorious. Matthew got maimed in Jurbarkas battle. As a backup heir „nephew” Arvet was invited back to court and married to genius girl.
In Osel army captured Alvydas The Blessed himself. But – the next day just before enforcing peace treaty king died!! Alvydas was Lithuanian legend. He baptised the country, saved Lithuania from annihilation, regained two Prussian counties and reconquested titular Duchy of Lithuania. It was not supposed to end this way. But it did. Was he killed on purpose to prolong Lithuanian-Livonian conflict? No answer could be found, war continued with Lithuania.



Things got really serious. The same month Winter Tsar Sudislav II decided to teach Livonia a lesson. He pushed claims for Duchy of Curonia, Duchy of Livonia, County of Latgale and as a wierd cherry on the cake for Barony of Vainalinn. Should Mats loose.. no, he should never loose. Or else.. Turaidas would be stripped of Duke title, made vassals of Russian Crown, rule oversized demeisne of 6 counties and be at mercy of the Winter Tsar.
 
PART 16 MATS THE ABLE. LIVONIAN WAR

The whole campaign. The war. It felt like walking the snow with your leg stuck. Every step. Knee deep. Sudislav II was extremely talented commander. His enemies and own men called him The Winter Tsar for his ability to lead troops in snow.



In battle of Atsela larger Livonian and Mercenary armies (15,643 men in total) enforced with famous Pecheneg horse archers under command of war hardened general Vihavald met 2 Russian armies (8,634 men led by Grand Prince Yelisey and 2,899 men led by Grand Prince and more forces arrived during battle, in total 13,694 men). Both Livonian and mercenary forces were full morale, ready for battle. Generals on Livonian side were better, except one particular person – The Winter Tsar Sudislav II himself. Despite being outnumbered by 1000 men Russian forces broke through the right wing, flanked and destroyed the center and the battle was decided.



More mercenaries were hired, but before they got to full morale Russian forces celebrated another victory near Dorpat against retreated units..
Russian forces besieged Dorpat. In the meantime Livonians retreated and merged with new hires. Now oponent was outnumbered by 2:1. Army arrived to Odenpah. There finally a victory was celebrated. Russian levies got crushed and further destroyed in Liivimaa.

Several personal successes accompanied battlefield victories. Arvet had genius son Alar born. Matthew despite being maimed became Brilliant Strategist. Isabelle’s second child daughter, also Isabelle, was married to Dan III af Bjalbo Sweddish King. Rus Prince Svetozar was captured in battle.



In next months Russians were reinforcing, in the meantime on year 1427 Grand Duchy and its allies (Byzantines) won several battles against Lithuanians and peace against Sergonis IV lead coalition (Carpathia, Turov) enforced .

Even when main Russian forces were destroyed Livonians could not afford to fire mercenaries, as every few months The Winter Tsar re-raised levies and went on attack. After 4 years of such dancing (1425-1429) the war was still not won yet.



Despite not owning a single foot of Livonian land The Winter Tsar did not consider himself loosing (warscore did not tick for some reason.even 4 years after beginning of conflict). Army was commanded deep into Ruthenian lands to besiege Russian fortresses. It had to be divided to avoid attrition. In Sakolniki and especially in Chashniki Sudislav II proved his legendary martial ability. In Sakolniki he attacked over river, but had minor number advantage which was sufficient. In Chashniki Sudislav II performed what many might call suicidial attack. Russians had less forces and attacked over minor river. Even there the Winter Tsar managed to win. It was a magic that could not be explained. Sudislav was military genius of his time. Best general to lead troops North of Byzantium. Campaign into Russia failed.



Months and months of walking snowy Russian lands. Months and months of cries of the injured, battles, battles and battles. Mercenaries and Livonian farmers and low nobles, they went through it together. They won, they lost, they felt, they rose. Slaughtered thousands of enemies, laid their own heads.

On year 1431 Livonian army won the battle of Krustpils. Russians were beaten, but would not give up. They returned again and won again. There was no way to win the war. More and more of Russians would raise in the East, as grey, dusty morning fog they would raise and come and under Sudislav’s command they were tough. Grand Duchy desperately needed peace. Treasury was down to 1813 ducats (from 5855!). War could not be prolonged any longer. White peace was signed. 14 years of constant fighting was over.


Livonian Grand Duke was relieved. Last years were torture for him. Mats was a researcher and scientist not a warrior and constant battles wore him off. Now, he could take a breath, truce was signed and would last for another 10 years.
Grand Duke died couple of months later. With him died the Truce with Russia. Everyone expected genius Matthew to become new Duke upon Mats’ death. It did not happen. Apparently due to unknown court intrigues Orthodox count was put in charge of Livonia. But this is what folk legend tells:
Duke Mats was found dead in early morning just after the war. He seemed asleep over the large table. Duke was reviewing papers on other Turaida men, possible successors. His frozen finger pointed at the name of Count of Russian Veliky Ustyug province. It was sign from above. The Lord had chosen .
Long live Duke Kosk II!

 
Sorry for rather long wait for update. It was quite a chaotic battle. Next update might also take more time.

This is me trying to explain the following :) I was clicking through the successor list for the Duchy and when you click on someone to check up he is temporarily chosen as successor. Unfortunately I did not stop the time. Mats died when I had last clicked on Kosk II.
It was the same night when Mats got captured in war and Latgale was lost... Here I really was close to drop it all and replay :) But then I thought, ok, we are 1432, 22 years before end of the game. Let's play through till the end. So what I lost the truce, so what I lost the genius heir. Russians of course attacked almost immediately :)

But before going there next update will be about Kosk, Count of Veliky Ustyug, before he got elected Grand Duke of Livonia.
 
EVENTS OF THIS POST HAPPENED IN PARALEL TO FEW PREVIOUS

PART 17 KOSK. COUNT OF VELIKY USTUG



Kosk was blessed with heavenly virtues. He grew up temperate, charitable, kind and diligent. Count of Veliky Ustug was also proud, brave and had rational mind that some characterised as him being cynical.

Kosk was born in Latgale. Spent childhood and early teenager years in Liivimaa. He was from special „Latgale Turaidas” line, which split of the main line when Ilmalemb II The Noble granted newly conquered Latgale to his brother Leppetoiv.
Latgale Turaidas had already produced one Grand Duke when Kosk (grandfather of current Kosk) was elected Grand Duke of Livonia, but only ruled for couple of years until pneumonia claimed him in Lithuanian forests. After his death Livonia (including Latgale) went into hands of Mats The Able and Latgale Turaidas became landless. Dynasty branch was closely related to Russian kings, counts and grand princes through marriages and stood to inherit Samoyed County of Veliky Ustug.

Young boy’s father Leppetoiv never hid his dissapointment for not inheriting Livonia and even more so Latgale. They lived landless but in luxury in Turaida castle. Vihavald, uncle and guardian of young Kosk, was chosen Marshall of Livonia and lead Grand Duchy’s forces in many campaigns.



Sweaty and tired Kosk arrived to Turaida Southern side which was granted to Latgale branch. He had diligently worked out with sword and was tired. It was when father informed young noble that Great Grand Mother Russian Princess Malfrida had died and they were moving to Veliky Ustug. Arctical Samoyed province far North East. Kosk did not want to leave Liivimaa, but had to. Father Leppetoiv was happy: „This, son, is our land. They could take Latgale from us. Livonian rulership changes hands with each elections, but Veliky Ustug is ours forever to work and live. Our land!”
New county was undeveloped and poor arctic piece of snow. Samoyed yurts, white sled dogs, reindeer milk. Tundra, white nights in summer, dark days in winter. County of Veliky Ustug was direct vassals to Rus kings. Leppetoiv saw a chance there to raise. As landed noble and heir it was decided Kosk would study arts of diplomacy instead of warfare. He did not dissapoint and became Charismatic Negotiator.



Young heir got used to new land and people. He acquired 4 laika dogs and learned how to sled. Kosk visited local reindeer herders often, had talks with shaman. He married Russian girl as his father wanted. Son Part was born, he was sent to Novgorod to be educated by Grand Prince Viacheslav The Spider to teach him Russian ways. Father Leppetoiv had far reaching prospects for Veliky Ustug line. Both Kosk's daughters also became Russians.



Kosk inherited County on year 1424 aged 26. He continued father’s policies and became loyal vassal of Sudislav II. Kosk was requested by his liege Russian king to command Veliky Ustug regiment in battles against Livonia. He did participate in legendary battles of Sakolniki and Chashniki where the Winter Tsar destroyed larger Livonian forces.


4th of February of year 1432 was day was similar to many others. Count returned from Shaman’s yurt when Messenger informed him of letter. Kosk sat there for a couple of hours, outdoors of his hillcastle watching the tundra, neverending whiteness. „I am taking dogs with me,” he woke up. To return home.
 
PART 18 KOSK II THE HOLY. BATTLE OF JERSIKA

On his way home Duke got assaulted and robbed. He knew well what it meant. There was little time before the enemy would strike again. Preparations for war against Rus started immediately. Veliky Ustug was granted to Arvet Turaida whose paternal line went back to Chingiskhan (evil rumours claimed Arvet had not a drop of Mongol blood). County could not be protected in case of military conflict therefore it was made independent.
Duke’s children got married for Western alliances. Son Part Koskovich married Princess Snofrid Yngling of Norway. Daughter Kiir Koskovna married Prince Matthew of Scotland. When maimed and dissapointed designated heir of Livonia genius Matthew died, Arvet’s son genius Alar got matrimarried back from Veliky Ustug and landed in Saaremaa island. Grand Duchy was to be ruled by geniuses.



The Winter Tsar did not make anyone wait. 2nd Livonian war was declared with same catastrophic result for Turaidas in case of success. Russians craved for Baltics.
King Hallkjel of Norway honored the alliance but no help was sent. Mercenaries were hired, armies were prepared and ready to protect the homeland. „Grand Duke, Grand Duke, enemy is approaching Latgale,” the messenger arrived from the frontline. „Son, who is leading Russians?” asked Kosk. „King Sudislav II himself,” replied the messenger. Duke raised his head: „Perkele!”



The first battle of Vainalinn was disaster. 35,000 men participated in the biggest slaughtery so far, about 15,000 of them never returned to the families. Livonian side had slight numerical advantage (18K vs 16K), but it was not enough against Russians. Winter Tsar had better quality of troops and he lead troops personally. Doors to Latgale and who knows Livonia were brutally opened. Krustpils and Erle were the first cities to fall.



Grand Duke knew well his enemy. Kosk fought for Russians in the first Livonian War and learned how good the future oponent was, how skillfully he planned and executed tactics in snow and frost.
King Sudislav II of Rus. The Winter Tsar. Even if the overall martial abilities were Standard (20) it did not matter. He was born to lead troops and fight in Russian winter. Sudislav was brave and his men kept high moral even in darkest battle. He was patient and never risked his men life without reason. The Winter Tsar had spent days and months analyzing seasonal warfare and could take on twice as big oponent in snow any time. Sudislav II also knew how to supply armies in winter, leading to minimum attrition. In the end he knew exactly what was good for Russian elite unit – the Heavy Druzhina Infantry. A formidable oponent. Best warlord East of Baltics since Rurik. Some claimed even Rurik was baby in comparison.


COUNCIL ROOM, CASTLE TURAIDA, AD1435
On the large oak table there was a map of Livonia with own and enemy forces put on their respective positions. Around the table there were 6 concerned faces.
„Not going good,” Kosk II watched eyes of his councillors, „What are our options?”
Mongol Temur the Marshall of Livonia: „We can’t beat them in winter. Every time king Sudislav breaks the opposite flank and destroys our forces.”
Fat spymaster Kaaren sat silent. Everyone knew why, he was craven and also he did not succeed in eliminating Sudislav with his methods. Kaaren was quiet as mouse not to be noticed.
Kosk II: „So, we wait for summer then, right?”
Mayor of Piltene and Steward of Livonia Vambola: „Unfortunately we can’t afford long war. We could fire mercenaries till summer..”
„NO! Absolutely not!” cried Temur, „Without mercenaries we can’t protect Turaida. If our capital falls the war is over!”
Vambola continued: „but we can’t afford long war. Mercenaries will eat our treasury which is not that high till spring. One victory in spring will not end the war. We will need more, we will need to reconquer cities in Latgale and even then... we are going bancrupt..”
„You are men, let’s go and destroy them in name of the Holy Church! We shall be victorious!” it was Chancellor Bishop of Riga Toll Turaida. Guy was possessed for good or for bad.
Kosk II: „We can’t beat them when they are lead by Sudislav, we should remove him, but how?”
Temur: „maybe, hm”
Kosk II: „Yes, Temur, speak up!”
Temur: „maybe all forces should concentrate against the center which is lead by Winter Tsar, once he is removed we should deal with the rest”
Kosk II: „It is so crazy it might work.”
„It will work! Your are blessed in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit!” cried the possessed bishop: „For Holy Land of Mary! For Livonia! We shall be victorious!”

After men left, Grand Duke Kosk II went to his room and dressed up in Samoyed Shaman clothes. He was not zealous believer in either Christ or paganism but sometimes you try everything to succeed. He climbed up to the highest hill in neighborhood. Army camp was down there as they watched.

The forces were arranged and under invited general German Reinhold they all went against the Center of Rus army that was lead by the Sudislav II. Russians fought back like crazy, they managed to build strong right flank that attacked Livonian forces from side. The casualties despite diference in numbers went equal on the first days, but then Russian center broke. Remaining flanks got destroyed one by one. Livonians were victorious.



Russians retreated but were chased by Livonians. Remaining forces got butchered. Luck smiled upon the Grand Duchy as the famous Winter Tsar was captured and brought to Turaida. After such an event duke Kosk II had to answer for his words, he had promissed to turn into Catholic should the war is won. Possessed bishop Toll of Riga baptised Grand Duke: „You, the Holiest of the Holy, the greatest of the greats, the saviour of Northern Catholics, the Protector of Holy Mary and Her Blessed land! The master of people, the servant of God!”

The peace treaty including large war contributions of over 400 ducats was enforced. It caused negative balance and financial instability for Rus. It brough peace to Livonia.
 
PART 19 KOSK II THE HOLY. THE EPILOGUE

Remaining 20 years were rather peaceful with Livonians recovering from decades of war. There was a truce with Russians and chancellor Toll was commanded to Vilnius to fill the ears of Lithuanian king on what a true Christian and hero Kosk II The Holy was. Overall policy was not to get involved in wars near Baltics.

Hansa rose. Grand Duke being Charismatic Negotiator managed to marry his cousin to acting Prince Mayor Norbert for favorable trade cooperation in Livonia.

Sudislav II did try to kill Kosk II though, but without success.

On family matters things did not work so well. Grand Duke realised that all of his grandchildren were Russians. They were to be re-educated. Grandson Vladimir Partovich, twins of Alar Svetozar Alarovich and Yaroslav Alarovich they all received Estonian diligent guardians. His long time beloved wife died. Young genius woman was married. She was too young and long after confessed in affair with courtier. Courtier was executed but child was legitimized.

Internationally there were 2 military conflicts near Baltics in the period. Sweden went Valdensian Holy War against Estonia. Estonia won with help of Teutones. Teutones went for Pruthenia against Alliance of Three Kings (Rus Sudislav II the Wise, Poland Stefan the Just and Lithuania Arelis). This war did not end before the timeline.
Pope called yet another Crusade and as usual 1/10 of Livonian force went there to become good Crusaders.
Russian King Sudislav II died of illness and with him died claims on Duchy of Livonia and Curonia.



A generation grew up in Livonia that did not know war. Grand Duchy now could field 10,000 men on its own. Treasury was full. Genius heir Alar was chosen to lead Livonia after Kosk II The Holy. In case something happened to Alar, there was a talented teenager quick Kaarel Turaida. Livonia was in good hands and looking for its renessaince future.

Hey, just noticed one thing. It says there you beat House Ylving. Isn't that supposed to say House Estrid?
